Well until I get into ffxiv I dont see myself getting use to the new name, so until then Ill refere to them as the old names, but once we all start playing, we will all eventually pick up the new names.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
there should be an option to vote for both terms in your poll, because I know that I would probably mix both race names up every now and then

Extremely good point!
Like I mentioned in another post, whether FFXIV is launched or not, if you say Mithra one will think you're talking about FFXI, but with Miqo'te then we know you're talking about FFXIV. I like the new names and will always use them when talking about FFXIV, and I'll use the originals when talking about FFXI!
There is no reason not too, other than being lazy having to type a few extra characters, or by being absurd and not accepting that even though the races may appear similar, this is an entirely new MMO! They should be called by their new names...regardless!
I think some players who were passionately playing ffxi for years might take a while because they're constantly reminded of their times in ffxi. It's kind of like a great experience and then they are introduced to the same chars they love just differently named. It might not be that they are necessarily lazy, but that they just had such a good time in their ffxi days that they tend to familiarize the new races as the old ones.

like many others, the name changes will come in time. Il personally try to say the newones as much as i can when the game comes, but i expect myself to slip up quite a bit at first.
I'll probably still use the old names just out of habit for a while, but more than likely that will change in time.
I never played as a taru, but I honestly can't see myself calling them anything else xD.
I think it's disrespectful to the game to call it anything other than the new names. I know many of us have such fond memories of FFXI (having played 2+ years myself). So naturally, we tend to call them the old names out of habit or just fondness.
The reason I think old FFXI members should make an attempt to call the new races is because you will have many many more people who've never exerpienced FFXI and are not aware of the names. Plus, some people, right or not, might consider old FFXI people who use the previous names as being elitist. "I've played FFXI for 7 years, I can call them what I want." Though this is likely a small small minority, I think it will exist nonetheless.
To give FFXIV the clean slate it deserves and to judge the game on its new merits, I think old FFXI players should really try to call the new races the new names.
lol really isn't about being lazy. The new names will be abbreviated anyways if there long, thats how it always works. After 5 years of Hume's, Galka's, Taru's and Mithra's not really going to change what I call them when there the same races lol. If they had done different races sure, but recycling the races just means I'm going to recycle the name. 5 years of a name attached to a particular race with a specific IP means I'm going to continue to do so if the IP and the races stay the same in the next chapter.
Will make it easy to determine who is an old school FFXI player and who's new to the scene too. If I see two people looking for a group and one is saying Galka lfg and the other is saying Roegadyn lfg is pretty much guaranteed that I'm inviting the one saying Galka with few exceptions as I know for one that individual will understand a lot of what I'm saying right off the bat and two I know they have at least some experience in the FF MMO's. With the one saying Roegadyn it's 50/50 on if there a new and if there new there not likely to catch on to what the party is doing and needs them to do very fast.
I'm thinking new.
So far I've been like 'Ah, that's a Tar- I mean Lalafell.'
If we don't get used to the new names we'll look like idiots when people ask us and we have to look it up.
'I'm not stupid, I just have an excess of useless information.'
I'll still call them Human, Elf, Cat, Midget, and Bear >.>
Being a new player, I won't know what you are talking about.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Personally I don't see a point in calling the exact same races by a different name to begin with; other companies who tried this simply reverted back after noticing that people used the old names regardless (To name a recent case, Diablo III went from "Dervish" to "Barbarian" simply because they figured that's what people would call them anyway).
In my case I'll most likely conciously type their new names out when looking for that particular race for whatever reason, and revert back to saying the old names when just casually talking without much thought.
I.E. Looking for <new name> <class> for <whatever>!
V.S.
Yeah, I think they should've added that weapon choice for Mithra.

I'm probably going to be calling a Pugilist a Monk for a short while as well.
Pugils are fish.
Edit:
Now that I think more about it, the people who played a specific race back on FFXI will probably keep on refering to themselves as such, while using the new names for others.
I see myself doing that; If I make a Hume or a Mithra I'll say "I made a hume again! o/" or the same for Mithra, while refering to the other races with whom I was nothing by their new names.
I haven't bothered to learn the new names. I heard they were practically the same so I didn't care. I'll roll a Taru Red Mage and a Galka Warrior like I did in XI, I'll figure out what the XIV equivalent is when the time comes.
Based on you votes, most people still do, actually I was one of the people calling them by their old names and said I always will but this is how it works for me. Once I started getting into the hype of things and looking for info everyday on the game you start to earn a respect for these new and improved races and they deserve a better race name. Each name kind of has a nice ring to it, minus the Lalafell lol, but even that has kind of a nice ring to it in the since, that is what I would expect a creature of that stature to be named hahaha lol. Now when I am talking to someone who plays or played FF11 back in the day I refer to them as their old names so that there isn't any confusion. Look at the names the are more fitting in a fantasy realm, think about the immersion into the game.
Hyur: Honestly reminds me of the citizens of Zelda games, the Hyrulians, a kinda cool name, I don't know if it is pronounced this way but this is how I say it, Hai-Ur
Elezen: Really not that different from Elvaan, they sound almost the same but looks better than Elvaan, Seems more like the name that the elves would call themselves, +1 cool point.
Lalafell: Think of something along the lines of a hobbit. A cute small rotund group of people who are cheery and happy, hell they remind me of teletubies but less queer and definately more cute. Lalafell is a fitting name for these new Taru and I believe once you dive headlong into the game and get into the story of the race you play you will call them by these names.
Mi'qote(Me Ko Tay or T not sure): I love this, sounds more like a tribe name, and them being just that, a race that roams in tribes this name is way more fitting than Mithra ever dreamed to be.
Roegadyn(Ro gay den, prob different but that is how i see it): Now they actually sound like a name of something, Galka was lacking, not only in name but in everything lack of character mainly. They are reborn now into the proud name of Roegadyn. Being an Elvaan in FFXI for some reason I am more drawn to play a Roegadyn this time, this race has improved drastically compared to its old counterpart the Galka. It seems they pumped some life into these hairless dogs, took away the tail, added some expressions and made them more proportionate, what more could you ask for? Hopefully they aren't asexual and we will see some kind of beautiful beast woman, think of the Hulk he is ugly, but look at She Hulk, a damn hottie, the females can look different than the males if they ever make a female Roegaden. this goes with mi'qote as well, hope we see some bad ass Man kitties in the future!
Miqo'te will just be shortened to Miqo anyways. Nothing really to worry about with the apostrophe heh.
I also understand people are going to want to call them by what they were always called in the game they played, but take into consideration a few small things. One you when typing the names you don't have to say Mi'qote, just type Miqote. OH boy look he didn't type an apostrophe he get a bann hammer nao!!!! Not quite. Two this is a new game with a new story and everything, and really until you start playing the game that effect will not hit you, and it may never hit some. lol. Once you become immersed into the game and the story (SE did say the story this time around is actually going to be good unlike that crappy stuff we got in FFXI, sorry for those who liked FFXI's stories minus CoP, making this worthy of a number in FF series). The names are going to be said alot and it will grow on most people, and from the poll alone most people already call them by new names.
You just got to remember, that there will always be some people who don't care or are just too stubborn to change the way they do things, they may always call them by FFXI race names even though they are no longer those races anymore, but just something similar. Really it is not a big deal, but like I said I think most people will change their minds on this once they dive into the game.
I'll probably call them by the old names for a while...Until I get used to the new ones, although I think it was stupid to give them new names since they're the same thing.
They said that their only similarities are only by looks. Each race is gonna be different to some extent from how they were in FFXI. New game, new world, new story, new names, makes sense. New history to each of the races etc
We're creatures of habit so it's gonna be rough calling them anything other than what we've gotten used to over the last 6-7 years. My complete hate for anything mithra will continue though . They were the root of all evil on my server.

I agree with you completely.
I will usually use the old names, but.
When LFG, I rarely 'spammed' my race, so I guess it doesnt relaly matter from that POV. Maybe races will be more... lets say... divided?
This game will attract new players for sure who probably never played ffxi.
So i did vote for the new names. Now we also dont know much about the game. Will race have its perks when it comes to stats or will it all just be cosmetic and your wep decides.?
While I plan on using the new names, I frankly a little dissappointed that they were unable to come up with any new races and chose instead to reuse old character concepts.
They went through a lot of work to create something that is new yet familiar to the veterans. I think that if you are ready to move on to XIV from XI than you should adapt to the changes.
