Just a lame "what if" question.... (Dark and Light)

Dark and Light is getting some serious attention for advertising as little as it does and not being from some major company such as Microsoft, Sony, Blizzard or Turbine.
So let's just imagine a plausable not so distant future... just a "what if" kind of question about this beast of a game.
Now, beta players are not allowed to speak any word about Dark and Light... a lot of hype and hyped screenshots on the DnL website sure. Not a lot of hype elsewhere. Noone says anything.
So.. in the next few weeks, lets say "Dark and Light" major news is released!
If you want to be in the original release of DnL you must prepay before April 30 as only the first 50,000 players will be allowed through the summer! Better Hurry and pre-pay now to guarantee your spot to be one of the first settlers in it's huge, expansive world. New movies are released. They are mouth watering movies that excite the soul of any fantasy mmo lover. $47.95 to guarantee your entrance! Two weeks after this release, another major release. It's now Mid-March and only 2 weeks into the pre-orders, they already have 30,000 guaranteed players! You really better hurry and pre-pay now as the unlimited player servers won't be up until atleast September.
50,000 pre-subscribers in record time as the word gets around and advertising goes wild for this game soon to be launched! More movies! Oh my gawd how could an mmo be that immersive or good? Wow!!
April 30.... No word from the devs..
May 21... Still no word....
July 6, Still no word, and noone yet has gotten any response from their claims or requests for refunds.
August we find out there was really never a functionable game world. All hype.
5 million dollars lost by hopeful DnL players in 6 short weeks. And since the company was overseas, nothing can and will be done about it.
6 guys overseas faked the mmo community out and laugh about it all over a pina colada on the sands of a secluded beach.
LOL... Well I know it's stupid. But "What If?"
And What if you lost your $47.95 ???

well, seeing as to how i probably would be one of those people who payed that fifty bucks there really wouldn't be much you could do, not sure how these legal things work but maybe sue? if not that then then just be more careful so there isn't a "next time", be more skeptical of games such as this that give out so little information.

I actually had this type of thing running through my head when I first started reading about this game and seeing it. "Could this be all a big joke?" or "Am I possibly dreaming?".
If your scenario happened to play out, I would say the first thing I would do is call a lawyer. Depending on what comes of that and talks with the state department, my next step is either to prusue through proper channels till it comes to nothing or something or just to let go and learn.
then again, those videos would be pretty hard to fake, but i guess that's not the point of the thread. stupid hypotheticals.

i think the whole "pay now and you can play in 3 months time" would ring a very big alarm bell in my head.
Even the recent Blizzard/Cryptic studios offers with Pre-orders (that is much less than the cover price and you would get refunded by the shop if the game would never materialize), is "pre-order and play NOW! (the beta of the game)" not in 3 months time

Hmmm. Naw. On the internet, there are no scammers out there. No where. No one is trying to rip off anyone on the net. Would never happen. LOL.
A game made in another country. Where a person wouldn't stand a chance of a legal lawsuit. It would cost way more to chase down the guilty then to just take the loss and a hard lesson learned.
Would it be much easier to make fake screenies and movies than to fulfill all the huge promises and hype this game has? Ofcourse!
Would the mmo community be a good place to hit right now with the mmo industry as a whole in dire need of a quality, blockbuster, and challenging mmo? Millions of mmo fans across the globe. Hmm, I would see how some scammer might see some very easy targets in this area of the possible prey.
Is all this scenario likely? Ofcourse not. Not likely. But possible, absolutely. Very possible. For you to say that such an illegal fraudulent situation to not even be possible at all on todays internet to be very ignorant to say the least.
All I have to say about this game, which probably will be released, but I do have some "too good to be true" concerns here.
And all I wanna say about "Dark and Light" is this which is a very great and true quote taken from one of my favorite movies of all time, "Lonesome Dove"...
"It is best not to get all your hopes up too much in just one thing. The way I see it is to spread out your dreams and appreciate all the small but finer points of life.. for if you put all your hope into just one thing, you are destined to be very disappointed in it."
A lot of people have a lot of high hopes for Dark and Light. It is promising a LOT.
My genuine hunch is that in some way, to some degree, Dark and Light is going to greatly disappoint a good deal of people. I really hope that I am wrong, and they prove true on all their hype and promises which would very likely make DnL the best mmo ever without a doubt. But if it does fall anywhere short of being the best mmo ever released, or if it does get canned... it will hugely disappoint a lot of eager mmo players.
So, I am going out on a limb here and predicting "Dark and Light" to be the mmo disappointment of the year 2005. Prove me wrong DnL... but all my insticts tell me I'll be right about this one.

Gotta love all the one sentence flame posts on these boards, they require so much thought and intelligence. Takes about as much thought and intelligence as hitting the same powerbar key over and over and over to succeed in all the recently released total P.O.S. mmos and acting like the game is "riveting, edge of your seat action"

First off, it's already been said that the game is free. You download the game, play a trial, and then decide to pay if you want to continue playing or not.
Second, the game has only one server. That's right, every single person plays on one server, which works since they need something to fill up the 40,000km squared area that makes up the seemless game world.
But yeah, this thread is lame. Go post conspiracys about MouRning instead of a game that is almost always updated daily with new screen shots, responces on the forums from devs, and news.
What's with the "Overseas" that keeps coming back? Why is that related to anything? Everything except for canada and a few third world countries is overseas for you, I don't get it.

Not everyone can spot a scam, or understand money & risks.
Recently we saw folks gladly paying 15 for disks for beta, which much of the time was waiting for the servers to come on line......
Also we saw a game that was in deveoplment go gold and fall on it's kester though it had a very large following. (Horizons)
So for a smuck that would look at the gaming market as a "risk venture" see all the korean games make it to market and do ok there. It would not surprise me in the least of this viable senario,
that venture, would see if "creative financing"i.e.donations, a project could come to be....
In the question, senarios basic question is what would folks pay to see there "dream game" come to market, and would they finance the game themselves, what would be an acceptable "donation" and what would be down right not acceptable.........

What if....Zaxtor is in fact a secret agent of an competing MMORPG trying to ruin the reputation of D&L in order to secure market shares for an US based MMO.

Which is funny in some ways but also rather serious since you are jeopardising, for no reason, the income and livelihoods of a bunch of devs who actually believe in mmorpgs.
Zaxtor - i can assure you being a lawyer (educated at the finest university in the world) and living in the Uk, that the "scam" you suggest is policed just as thoroughly in Europe as it is in the US.
Have you watched the countless DnL videos? Seen all their screenshots?? They are developing the game - its not a scam. Warcriminal- perhaps you are right...

Okay.. first off I never once said that I thought this was actually the case with Dark and Light. I thought it might be interesting to post a simply plausable, hypothetical scenario with a game that looks to be promising to be by far the best fantasy mmo to ever come out if indeed it keeps even half of its promises.
Do I think Dark and Light is a scam? Absolutely not.
But it's just something to think about and perhaps post about creatively.
For all of you who got pissed about this post, or think it's a stupid waste of a thread, or who think that it is "impossible" or "would never ever happen"... well then sorry for wasting your time. Go back now to your countless "Game A vs Game B" threads and flame a game you dislike for the 40,000th time and stop flaming me.

Zaxtor i accept that you may not have meant any harm.
However you really should think before posting this kind of stuff. Your "hypothetical" scenario could influence some people into thinking DnL possesses some of the problems you suggest. Whch it does not. Why did you post your "what if" in relation to DnL?? There are countless other mmorpgs in development which you could have posted about in the same way. Again such posts would have been ridiculous
To post your opinion is fine but to post something that is NOT true and that could adversely affect the lives of the Devs working on the game by depriving them of future paying subscribers is not right.

Watch out for the hype fanatics... Reason do not work on them, they believe in a game a lot more than most religous fundamentalists and would probably bomb your house if you spoke ill about a game they liked and they knew where you lived.
The scenario is fun... And not too impossible, I am sure some of the amateur MMOs in development, many who have passed through this site, has been possible scams like you describe. Just a big air castle without any real substance that someone try to get 15 bucks a month from. Absolutly. Now, DnL might not be that... I know, I have seen it, but it will still be a wake up call for the fundamentalists, that words and hype can not build a game alone.

Of course not, the next game comes and they will act exactly the same again. Like the bunch that said EQ II was flawless all through development, no matter the problems people pointed out. Just the same thing again, different name..

Guys this "scam" scenario is just a load of rubbish. How many times do people have to say this to you. Since it is a valueless post you are hurting the devs and the game for no reason. The examples you give bear no relevance to your purpose in posting this garbage.
Do you have info which makes you think DnL will be terrible? Do you have evidence of dishonesty on the part of the devs? Do you have evidence that the game doesn't exist?? If so then please tell us and we'll listen.
Otherwise i feel this post is just an immature cry for attention.

There is no proof that Dark and Light is a scam.
And furthermore, for like the 17th time, It was only a "hypothetical" situation question that could very easily turn out to be ANY hyped mmo. How many times do I have to repeat myself without you coming back saying "Where's your proof man?" and "You aren't doin nuthin but hurting the game" like a complete dolt.

As i said, you are free to post how rubbish the game is and put forward any reasons you might have supporting your opinion. I can think of many things i don't like about DnL and countless other mmorpgs.
However to post an imaginary scenario which implies groundless accusations in relation to a particular game is wrong.
If you had posted this without mentioning a particular game then that would have been ok. But once you mention a particular game by name - you'd better explain to us why your "hypothetical" scenario happens to mention one single, specific game. Well??
