SW: TOR is likely to be the only one that lives up to the hype, in some way, because I have yet to find a Bioware game that has crashed and burned like plane when it's left wing breaks off.

The way I see it, ArenaNet is anti-hyping it or something to that effect. We know next to nothing about the game's mechanics (even though I appreciate all their interviews about the game's lore) and it seems like we'll be fed a slow drip of information as the year progresses.
Darkfall is my choice. Anyone remember that old fan made video that promised so much?
And anyone remember the legions of Darkfall fans who liked to invade the variouse forums here?
Considering how long it took and what had come out it was WAY overhyped.

I think MMO gamer's as a whole are becoming jaded. Most were burnt on either Vanguard, WAR, AoC or Aion or in some cases all four.
WoW came out, brought millions of new players to the genre. After four years these players were getting a little bored with WoW. They started looking for a new game so they bought the new titles thinking 'hey if Blizz could make WoW, anybody could make a solid game'. They got burnt each time.
I don't think players are as vulnerable to hype as they used to be.
FFXIV? Guild Wars 2? The Old Republic? Which game do you think isn't going to live up to the hype? All of them perhaps? I honestly think it'll be The Old Republic if anything. I've said it once and I'll say it again. I am not a fan of monthly fee + cash shop. I'm really not a fan of it in an MMO with the kind of limited player interaction I've read about.
I would say STO. Even MMORPG.com staff jumps on its bandwagon:/
I don't know. My expectations are very low, so it won't be that hard to be pleasantly surprised. I thought Vanguard was going to be a lot of fun and it was terribly flawed on release. Then I thought WAR was going to be the great successor to DAoC, but it was boring after you did the instanced PvP a few hundred times.
So I'm not hyped about any of those games. I'm really interested to try The Old Republic. Part because it's Star Wars, and part because I really want to check out what the Hero Engine can do.
I believe if the Hero Engine is really good, that the price is dropping on that engine, and lots of developers will use it to make MMORPGs.
However, I did think the Hero Engine would cut development time significantly, but it hasn't really done that for TOR. But, I think they spent the same time in development as most MMORPGs, and instead of spending a year or two JUST to do the Engine, they spent that time on content. That would make a huge difference.
Have hardly heard anything about TOR exept if i have visit TOR-forums. SWTOR on the other hand makes me puke, crawl back to the cave again and come back when you guys have something to deliver.
Darkfall. It was hyped up as the best sandbox MMORPG since UO but was such a huge dissapointment when released.
They say it is much better now but I dont think many of us who were there at launch will ever go back. It was such a terrible game, full of bugs, exploits and imbalanced skills. yuck
I didn't know GW2 was hyped. I've seen mostly every other mmo talked about on various websites except GW2.
Right now the game with the most hype is SW:TOR. It certainly can't live up to that hype but I'm fairly confident it will turn out to be a good entertaining game.
I think it is STO. Bioware might fail but I still think they will add something to the genre, they are trying something new and some good things usually comes from that even if the game itself will suck (Which I am far from sure of). Guildwars 2 will sell a lot, and so will FFXIV. STO will not add to anything and people will forget it faster than WAR. Cryptic never been that good, they might get a hit with their upcommi9ng Forgotten realms MMO but that is just because that is something you can't fail with. Star trek is the opposite, it is probably the hardest IP you can find.
That's the diffference between Loke666 and me.
no the difference between you and Loke666 is that he is not a rambling maniac (most of the time)
STO doesnt seem very hyped, most people seem very negative about it, but then again I dont know anyone who cares about the Star trek IP. I think most people would be abit embaresed to say they play a Star trek MMO
I think SWTOR, GW2 and FF14 have good chances to be good games since they are made by experienced teams.
But I think Lego:Universe deserves alot more hype after watching the gameplay videos
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
It's fair to say that every major release is over hyped now. On the other hand, GW2 and FF both seem to be under the radar so far.
This. You can even add Global Agenda to the non-hype selections, even if it is going to be a small mmog.
Developers choosing to keep their games under the radar makes me feel a bit more comfortable as of late. FunCom and Mythic really tried to put a spin on their piles of crap mmorpgs.
It still amazes me that Mythic could really be so stupid and screw up WAR so badly. They had a winning formula in DAoC, it just needed to be modernized a bit. Well, Jacobs got that he deserved.
Star Wars: The Old Republic with EA as publisher will be overhyped big time...
BTW the newer games only release with popular and known IPs! That pracitally guarantees an overhyped game, because you can draw people in just by showing a virtual Enterprise/Rivendell/Jedi/Druchii/Barbarian.
When MMORPGs where in their youth, there would be virtually no MMOs featuring famous franchises and that provided a much more solid pre-launch, retention and longevity. Sure you can still hype your product like hell and deliver a bug-infested POS (Vanguard, Darkfall, etc), but in general games with famous names on them are much more vulnerable to the 'huge box sells, freefall subnumbers after 2-3 months'-phenomenon.

The old republic. Then again I was never much of SW fan.
Can't wait for FF14 though..and hope Dragonball Online gets a US announcement soon.
