Hercules used to be such a AoC fanboy, now he's venting his frustrations on MO

Oh dear. This is the first video I've seen of MO, and it doesn't look too good. Fair enough, they're both starter characters with starter/crafting axes, but damn the combat looks tedious, slow and unresponsive. Notice dthere's a great lack of environmental details, grass, trees etc. The environment looks bare.

Just to note: Starter axes are the most slow and cumbersome weapons in game.

You should see low-weight dagger fight! Thats like watching bunnies mate

Just think of the weapons swing faster.

That's about the only difference in "high level PvP" vs the video you saw.

  • gothagotha Member UncommonPosts: 1,074

those videos do look damn nice. at least graphics wise.

If only this game worked,  and had third person combat.

    and good funding

    and good management.

So basically you're saying if only this game was another game? :p

The character models and animation look a bit better than DF.

  • LexiscatLexiscat Member Posts: 204

Looks great to me.  From all the videos i've watched, this game is shaping up nicely.

I really enjoy the more realistic style of combat that MO is trying to simulate. I appreciate it, and hope they can hash out the rest of the world as well.

FFA PvP for me doesn't work without a strong world for people to exist in. Otherwise it won't be as much of a world, as it will turn into clan vs clan arena.  In my opinion.

Some of those videos really make me want to play this game though, I love the stand offs people have with Melee Weapons. So much different then what i'm used to seeing in other games.

This is a much more accurate portrayal of PvP on Mortal Online.

The unfortunate thing is that he's making an assertion (and an untruthful one) that combat is somehow vastly different if your skills were maxxed out.

It's the same basic concept, just using 2 handed swords and faster swinging.

Here is a video of  "advanced" combat during old patch.

I agree it looks boring but when its YOU that is fighting I swear that the adrenaline rush is enormous and its really entertaining.

Currently they are balancing the weaponsa nd introduced some new weapon pats for even more weapon designs.

Also a lot of new combat-related skills got in the previous patch.

Thanks for the link , it seems that others don't care about these videos and want to focus on the bad. I have been watching MO for awhile to see how it pans out. I played DF for a bit and found it lacking for some reason. I had fun for a few weeks but it wore out quite quick for reasons I leave out of this thread. To me MO looks like it will be getting my money next , the game just looks epic.

Ok there is a term I haven't heard applied to MO.... Epic.

So just what about it looks "Epic"?? You of course do know what the word means, not what some fawnboi thinks it means, right??

I like Herc and many others would love to know what all of you find so epic, wonderful, exciting, new and different, etc, etc, etc about this game. I for one find it boring, tedious, bland, underdeveloped, under funded, mismanaged, and down right a steaming pile.

Convince me that I am wrong with facts, not some strawman argument or "feelings" but actual facts showing what makes this game  "better"

    Waiting.........

I gotta agree with you.  The game is really unpolished, its underfunded, its bland, big time mismanaged, developers dont even know how to update their patcher to lower the volume of the music for 7 months now, and yes, its boring.  They added the new crafting system in and its a huge hassle.  Takes an hour grinding just to make 1 piece of armor.

Wish another company would buy SV so the game would actually have a good release and a long life as I do not see starvault doing this in its current state.

    Better than what?

How not to mention feelings when each player has different preferences?

There is bunch of guys who like Dragon Age and bunch of guys who hate it. Does this make the game bad?

Each game is aimed at certain gamer group of the market.

If you dont like certain game then maybe, just maybe...this game was not aimed at you and you should move on to a game you may like.

    Its that simple, you see?

I have competed in stick fighting tounaments all over EU for the last five years, thats why i have a opinion about it. Otherwise i would not have one.

Who cares what real combat looks like? This isnt supposed to be a RL simulator, it is supposed to be a game that is fun. Atleast that is what I hope the devs are doing.

Personally what I like in MO is the freedom of playstyle it offers. The exploration thrill of finding a cool zone that noone else have visited. The vast skill system and skill cap that prevents you from turning into a hyper hybrid and also prevents grinding.

The open world with no zones where I can follow a guy for 30 minutes without him escaping in some instance number 44321.

The ability to kill that guy even though he may have better gear just becouse I am more skillful.

The ability to loot this guy :)

Or how about being able to build your own house? Tame a pet, get a mount, take care of those animals since they dont disappear when you dismount them nor when you log out :)

Also, sneaking into a guarded town and the adrenaline you get while snooping unsuspecting guys and stealing their precious gear?

I am sure everyone playing the game will have different reasons to do so.

What you guys want though is compareble to a guy who doesnt like cheese demand a person who does like cheese to give him facts why cheese is good....its just matter of taste really.

So you expected the combat in the game to be this bad?

I mean I like all the things you mentioned but I want the PvP to be fun and that crap you see in that video, swining and axe in two different ways while trying to see your target in a narrow First Person View, does not look fun or well made.

What don't you like about first person view? Its what made EQ1 so enthralling for me, albeit I didn't have to aim in EQ.

This sounds like a game less about the pvp and more about the actualy roleplaying elements. unfortunatley all of these games get invaded by the pvp crowd.

That would be true if there were any roleplaying mechanics in the game. There's not even emotes yet.

And to boot, if you read the FAQ and the interviews, the developers themselves say it's a PvP game.

The game had emotes, but they changed the skeleton model a few patches ago and are going to have to make new ones. Henrik said they just hired a guy who should have started this past monday who specializes in animations. He is supposed to be making a bunch of emotes.

if you read the faq they state thet the game revolves around pvp and player interaction, they are trying to make a game like UO where pvp is important but not the only thing to do.

Combat in the game isn't "that bad", the guy is on a new character wearing starter gear. The starter axe is a non-lootable harvesting tool for beta testing purposes and it swings slow and does crap damage, pvp with a tool they give us just to we can test other features is not an accurate portrayal of pvp in MO.

Your comment about FPV is a personal opinion, I don't have a problem with FPV in general, I just think the camera is too low.

They are making that game on paper only. UO had so much depth, so many options, great, balanced PvP, great crafting, the ability to sell your wares on the open market with vendors, etc... MO isn't 1% of UO even yet. It's basically a hack and slash game with static housing (ie, can't really do anything with the house -- no customizations, can't even SIT in it) that mimics all the bad things about Age of Chivalry in terms of gameplay.

There's no depth. There's no content. There's no ingame mechanics for being a "sandbox" (ie, create your world). All you can do is use a broken and buggy crafting system to create a 2 handed sword (yes, that's the only thing people make to fight because there's no weapon balance EITHER), to go and hack and slash at one another for no rhyme or reason, and with no mechanics to support it.

They are basically trying to sell a really big, badly working, Unreal mod. I can't wait until launch either -- the server is going to choke (because it can barely handle a bunch of fanboys that continue to play), people are going to be up in arms, and the sheer amount of bugs that are yet undiscovered (and I bet it's a lot) due to their flawed development process (not following a proper SDLC) will come out and the game will basically be a failure.

If you choose to buy the game, you're doing it to support the company and no other reason, but if you read about their practices with regards to shipping the actual products they promised back in September well.... you know how much you can trust them pretty quickly.

  • adralaadrala Member Posts: 148

MO has the base and its devs have the  desire to make it into UO 2.

Eversince game entered open beta it has been going in the right direction. Or do you disagree?

You speak as if they will stop developing the game as soon as they release it...

I think what is important here is that they WANT to make the game a true sandbox. It may take time. Sure it will do. After all its an indie company. No big one would ever touch such risky project.

As devs said it will be a rough ride. Who wants to join is welcome!
