Just playing in sto beta and have to say this going to be a great game the combination of ground and space combat is great,When i first beamed down to do a ground mission with other players i did not even know it was great it felt like we wear really doing and living star trek.getting new ground gear and loot is just like playing a fps rpg then it's combined with space travel and combat.
The potential for content is enormous not only do you have to gear your crew but you need to equip your ship as well and or ships. And the space combat is pretty cool you have shields different type of energy weapons and torpedoes to mines. Also the micromanaging of your ship during a battle as well as different crew member skills.I am really please with this game the only thing is that there are a lot of bugs atm but its beta.i think this game will be a success as a mmo.

I like it alot so far but I only played for around 3 hours total. Great game so far, I can't wait to pvp.
I'm having a blast! Lots of potential but polishing will take a bit of time. It feels somewhat like a modern day EnB....my first MMO.
I like the slower space-pace. I was iffy before the beta but I'm definitely going to buy it now.
Cool that you are having fun.
Just explain to me why potential makes something a great game? Are you sure you dont mean to say that it has great potential instead?
I mean that even makes current SWG a great game to SWG vets, because it could potentially be rolled back to preCU
Why not limiting to what the game is now? What I read from your post, its unfinished because of the bugs and lack of content. But yeah, the future promises good stuff to happen.
All games can have a promising potential future which doesnt mean much if the game doesnt live long enough to get there. What will dictate the success of STO will be when it goes live..what condition is it in, is there a lot of content, are there few bugs, is it stable without the rubberbanding, etc. They have A LOT to fix and add the next month. If the game does poor early and subs decline as fast as they did in WHO and AOC then the future potential for STO is reduced signifigantly since it wont make money or little money. IMO this game is going to launch too early, they really need about 3 more months to get it cleaned up and ready for a launch.
Right now, it is still a guess about how deep this game will be. It does have potential.

well i use bridge officers as an example you can have bridge officer for ground and ones for space all trained to tasks for certain situations

I definately like the game as well .. actually i love it so much that i am going to stop playing the beta.
So when its released i dont know all thats comming
ok im so tired of seeing posts like this.anyone who doesnt worship a game that you people like you automatically jump to omg they are trolling children....no this isnt true.i am 30 years old and i have put more then 12 hours into the game.the game is very average..once you get past the flashy space combat.it has little else to offer.the ground portion of the game is AWFUL.Pure zzzz.and if you expect some kind of deep seeded end game content you dont know cryptic at all.the company isnt known for it.so dont expect it here.all the issues this game has will not be fixed by betas end and probly never will.they are design flaws.im not an mmo troll.i love mmos when done well.even when one comes out that has issues you usually can tell if a games gonna have a good following but im not getting that sense here..once the usual "new mmo hoppers"quite in 2 months..and the trekkies in 4 to 5 months.the game will be left witha generally small population.
ps sorry wouldnt have even posted about it but that post just kinda pissed me off.

Well considering Cryp has only released about half of the game in open beta it will get deeper, anyway I like it a heck of alot more then that boring mmo called eve
iI agree.Beta ruined Aion for me.I don't see why people get so excited about being in an open Beta.
I agree, the game's definately fun.
I think we can all admit, though, that not every game is for everyone. Different tastes for different people and all that. While there are a lot of trolls who haven't spent much/any time playing the game, that's not true of everyone who dislikes the game either. While some may make assinine comments that we associate with adolescents, we have to remember that old farts can be as retarded as teenagers sometimes, and certainly they don't represent the only people who dislike the game.
If you dislike the game, that's fine. Vote with your pocketbook and move on. There's no need to continue bashing a game because you don't like it. (Not singling anyone out here btw).

Thank goodness for that.
Anyway...there's a difference between 'bashing' a game, and speaking openly about its flaws.

This game is fun. And I think thats the important thing about an MMO is that its fun to play. If you want gritty crafting go for Fallen Earth its a very good game and I have enjoyed it but Star Trek Offers uncomplicated fun, no need to worry about ammo or crafting 100 widgets to get to craft that sword etc. Its jump in and have fun.
Ground combat has to be one of the best experience I've had in such a game, it doesn't feel like your grinding out 10 rats your actually in the middle of a fight. And the rest of your team are backing you up and running around, its very fast passed and offers a surprising level of compexity for what I orginially thought was a very simple form of combat. When I first found out that I had 1 normal attack, 1 special attack, 1 melee (close range) attack and a choice of one special ability ranging from leg sweep to focus fire etc. I thought this is going to be boring, look at all those other MMO's were I have 10 different special attacks. It turn out STO built those special attacks into the combat engine, rather than having a sneak attack if you come up from behind or the flank of your opponent you get a flanking bonus good if you are using a rifle and snipe him. The same goes for if you want to take aim you can go into aim mode where you move slower but do more damage. And this is before having to think about all the special and additional abilities your team have. Who can use there abilites independently or under orders.
I've also noticed some people saying that the graphics are bad. And I must admit I thought this until I upped the resolution to my screen size and then they became very good. Much nicer that those in WAR at the same resolution and thats forgetting the amazing levels of customisation available. Some people have said its less than the other Cryptic games but if so they must be something else. Too often in MMO's its about picking from a couple of faces and a few hair styles. There is so much more choice in STO along with creating your own race.
Now its not all great, but we are still in Beta so it might change. The first big problem I have is how slow space combat is. Now this may lead to hard core trek fans wanting my blood. Which can explain the reason for this, they have tried to make it as much like the films as possible, Now I wonder if special effects and ILM had been making the fight scenes might they have been a little more action packed and including fighters and a lot faster. We will never know, so its clear why Cryptic went down the slow combat arc but this is also a game and it would be good if it didn't sometimes feel like a chore. And the other slight problem is the loading screens, there feel like there are a lot of them early into the game. The missions are quick so you take out a few enemy vessels beam down kill some Klingons and then beam back out. As missions get longer I'm sure the odd loading screen will not be a problem.
Some people have mentioned the instancing as being a problem, and I can see where they are coming from. But I also know that it would be very strange to enter an area and find its qued up with star ships waiting to blow up 3 enemy vessels to move onto the next part of the quest. The instancing makes for a more fun experience without having to que to do whatever your there for. And does it really stop you from meeting others, I don't think so. Most the time kill stealing leads to bad feelings not those of friendship or finding someone is camped in a spot you need to be doesn't lead to a guild invite. So is instancing great no far from it but its better than the alternative.
Ultimately the game is well worth checking out. There is much to be said for it and well worth a months gaming. And if its not hardcore enough for you then I highly recommend Fallen Earth but Star Trek Online may surprise you.
You need the bad reviews and trolls as much as the heavenly posts. It needs a balanced view point for the fence sitters to make a good decision. Nothing worse than the launch of CO all over. People are generally smart enough to sift through the crap posts and find ones that are constructive. If everything was rosy it would be as suspect as the everything is bad side. As long as someone played no matter the length of time their opinion is as valid as anyones.
agreed..if the devs dont know what they are doing wrong they cant fix it....but sadly most devs dont listen to there player base anyway.alot of people are gonna see how cryptic was with champions and city of heroes and pretty much make there mind up on that..which is actually a good theory.companies dont change from game to game..sony hasnt, funcom hasnt and sadly i dont see the trend ending with cryptic.indie devs seem to have a better ear for listening to player base since they cant afford to lose subs.i wish bigger companies were like that.
Right now on OB I am enjoying it. That to me is all that matters, my enjoyment.....and wife is happy I aint playing WoW
As usual on MMOs there is a huge potential (on known IPs players notice this more than on new IPs), unexplored, outside the current bounds, you could call that innovation. If they want to explore that potential, they could have a very unique game than what it currently is.
Playing the game you can notice that potential and either be greatly disappointed or support the future, I don't know how much fun there will be within the current content, but I've been playing for my second day and so far, it feels fine while not that perfect dream:
- Ship combat is quite challenging and fun., though people say it has been done before in PotBS this is my first time experiencing it. Controlling space ships is not meant to be easy, and that's why I see potential in player crews being able to man much bigger and complex ships, maybe even bringing realism to the ship interiors such as some people being in charge of doing physical repairs.
- I like games that put some kind of randomization in it, until I experience all the core possibilities I will gladly take its replay value.
- Measuring levels in skill points is a new approach for me, and quite interesting in my opinion as I can try to take it differently from the overused experience concept.
Be aware I only posted the pros here, sharing good experiences seems to be the point of this thread and there are others for the negative aspects, what needs to be fixed, etc.
I am having fun now too. The game is not for everyone but I will be playing it for a long time to come. It is buggy but that is what beta is for. I am almost to the beta level cap and I really like the feel of the game, Ground combat is very fun for me and after learning about turning speeds and how to manage shields, space combat is getting quite interesting.
If people don't like it then whatever. It doesn't bother me at all. I am not a trekkie and know very little about star trek but this is a nice sci-fi game that will hold me over until SWTOR is released next year.
Sure, game is fun for few first days, but it gets extremely repetive FAST. And combat could be LOT more interesting than it currently is. It feels like dumbed down version of starfleet commander with much less dept, which is disappointing but expected.
Basically no matter what you're facing tactics on killing them is always the same. Only graphics are different. Fighting battleships on miranda cruiser? no problem, compared to npc ships player ship is insanely overpowered. (Ala CoH, CO)
So it doesnt really feel like archivement when you go soloing battleships on a ship that should get blown to pieces by them.
Crafting? Fetch items and combine them for loot at particular npcs.
PvP? Your typical instanced pvp seen in CO. Can be fun if teams are even tho.
My biggest gripe is most missions are just kill kill kill kill, when Star Trek aint really about combat. There really should be other ways to solve missions than just blowing everything to smitherees, they have engine that could make it posibble so why is it so completely underused?
Sure it has potential, but so did War, AoC, Vanguard, Darkfall, SWG etc.
From all you said I understand that STO is going to be great GAME, and lets say I can believe you. But what I do not understand how you found it to be a great MMO as you have not mentioned any MASSIVE mechanic in it?
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

You can never know if you will like it or not if you aint trying it youreself. I myself will neverever listen to others to decide if i like or not like an game.
Can't be said any better. Alot of people have there own opinions. As well as likes, dislikes, and past experiences.
but all the instancing will make the game very repetative very fast since its just constantly the same missions in a different background.
The game actually reminds me alot of pirates of the carebean sea though pirates is the better game with its huge open sea, so a sense of freedom, and politics craft and pvp wise.
The game is a blast and it only has about 30-40% of its features online yet. Can you imagine what we'll be doing when they release and after with 100% or at least closer working? I'm sorry to those who don't see it, you really have to have an imagination to play these games - sadly a trait that I think many people now days have lost. They just want wizz bang graphics, fast and furious action, along with totally ubberness. That is not an MMORPG, that is what you get in single player games.
STO is about being an MMORPG where you are part of the great Star Trek world. Last time I watched an episode or even movie they aren't out there being the next installment of Bond, it's a story about a galactic civilization living their lives. That's a far cry from one person being the center of attention, though I'm sure some will always stand out.
STO is a blast, simple, elegant, fun, and addictive in that you can stand around the local space station and just watch the game world roll on through.
I agree, very fun game and space combat would be very confusing if it was not instanced
I think AOC and Vanguard are 2 very good games , vanguard just lacks support but still manages to be a good game and people who are not playing it are missing out, AOC is also a very god game if you can put up with the ganking , WAR to me wass awful and swg would be good if it was free
