I think its funny that the video is named "an unbiased look" when it clearly is.

I understand from what Mat says that they must release the game prematurely because they desparately need the money.  I also understand that doing so will piss off many potential fans of the game to the point that many of them will not only hate the game but take it upon themselves to give the game bad publicity every change they get.  While they may get an initial influx of cash at release, the majority of those people will leave the game in disgust which will do more harm in the long run than delaying the release of the game a few more months to give it the polish it needs to retain a devoted playerbase.

From what Henrik said they are releasing in less than 2 weeks.  if they do that with this broken version the game will fail.  They do not have enough programmers to rush it out for release without completely killing the game.

They don't have much of a choice at this point. The partnership with nvidia gave them a little money, but if they have any hope of making the game last more than a week, then they have to do this.

  • wait wait wait was this one of those posts that could have actually used the sarcasm puncuation mark?

    Well, unfortunately, this.

People that will stick with this game are people that have been active on the forum and in the beta, submiting bugs and trying to bring more polish to this rough gem. I dont know how many of you have been in Block A... dear lord, that was a mess... they have updated and added a whole lott of new things, and sure, new bugs with it, but damn, they are working their asses of to deliver an mmo that i and MANY others want! There are many people in the bat that are actually exploring, crafting, fightning.. and truthfully, its fun. Yeah its still rough around the edges, but frankly i dont care... i havent had this much freedom in an mmo since i last played eve a year ago. And i love it.

Let me tell you a story. About a month ago, i ventured outside Fabernum, with a sword a personally made from ..some material i cant remember the name, and my starting clothes. Outside i found 2 guys sparring with not much better weapons than i had. I proposed to them to go hunting together. And so we grouped and went north-west... somewhere, in hope of finding, and possibly killing some animals for crafting materials. I cant explain it but, as we explored, the three of us, i felt free... it felt immersive and awesome, the world felt HUGE and it was like we were left in its mercy because we were noobs with nothing on us and no skill whatsoever.. Plus we were always on alert for other players, maybe trying to kill us. Finally, we were at the beggining of a big forest. As we ventured inside, everything turned darker. We saw a dire wolf, and in the back another one. The three of us, having no knowledge whatsoever of how dire wolves behave we just stood in place. We came to agreement to just attack it all at once. And so we did. And we died after acidentally aggroing the second wolf. It was awesome.

I played EVERY mmo that came out in the last 6 years... none of them can come close to that experience. Sure my pathetitc english sentence making cant do that experience any justice... but it was awesome ;).

But as things now stand.. devs post actively on the forums, they talk to us, informs us of whats coming etc. They are there for their community. I respect this, and thats just one of the reasons i will play this game when they release it... and no number of flying gazzeles(?) will change my mind.

The whole situation screams "Vanguard" a game that could have been the number one in the world but was hence shot down because lack of money pushed it out the door.

Partnership with Nvidia??? What the heck are you talking about, they have NEVER had a partnership with anyone. They have used their tools and code but that is not a "partnership".

You will find nothing on Nvidia about one and nothing on Unreal's site either. SV is just hyping the code usage to try to covince naieve children that they are being supported by the big boys.

SV will never improve the engine since it belongs to Unreal so unless Unreal makes an improvement SV is SOL. They don't have the programmers or the knowledge to mod the engine nor I would bet, the license to do so. BTW has the Speedtree 5 code been implemented in the game yet?? Naw didn't think so, just another hype post by SV.

As to the poster that stated that no big companies are making anything like this guess why??? They know that these type of games are total FAIL. They have the people to do the research and know what will sale and like it or not in the world of business profit is the driving factor.

Any company saying that they are making something because they love the idea, want to help their fans, etc are flat out playing you for a sucker or on their way to bankruptcy.

No, they need to relese it now. I dont think SV lkes it anymore then any player does......but that is the world we live in. A real shame the reality sneaks up on you sometimes.

And this is what really makes me angry, Again we see a small company trying to make a big sandbox MMO, just because no big company can do it.

Look, I would love to create a sandbox, spaceship MMORPG to compete with Eve. However I know that I dont have the funds to create such a game.

MMORPGs are massive projects, more so than normal PC games, and they need massive amount of funds. If you start to develop and you never had those funds to begin with then you cant use "reality" as an excuse to release a game that does not hold release quality.

MO should never have been developed because they did not have the funds to support a proper development project. That is regardless on how good it looks on paper. If you dont have the funds for it then it does not matter how much good the game looks on paper.

What MOs release will show is that yet another FFA PvP MMORPG is a semi-failure and that is a shame because both Darkfall and MO are semifailures with tiny populations not because the concept is bad (Eve proves that) but rather because the implementation is.

Just want to comment on one thing. Unreal 3 engine is an excellent engine as shown by the many 3D games created using it (Gears of War being one of them). So what MO needs is not a bette engine, Unreal 3 is a very good engine, but rather people who have the competence to properly use it.

And what type of games are FAIL? Eve has shown that FFA PvP games certainly are not fail. What is fail are small companies with no money thinking they can compete with the big boys. Sometimes they can, like CCP, but most cases they cant.

This is bologna. Seriously, how many freakin' "WoW" clones do you think we need? Why are you so against a game that would be a breath of fresh air in the stagnant "no risk, all reward" super easy WoW mmo culture? We NEED a game like Mortal Online - or another game like it to succeed. It would be good for this mmo market to actually have something a little different. Something to give all the die hard mmo fans that miss games like pre-Tram UO and Asheron's Call so much. But instead, we have all these WoW fans crying and QQ'ing and trolling the forums of any game that might require a little skill or something besides spamming the same 2 hotkeys over and over.

You people that bash this game non-stop should cheer this game on or perhaps try and give good constructive feedback to Star Vault rather then constantly trashing a game like this with all of your time.

I understand why we have 1,000 WoW clones and why all the big companies don't want to take any risk, but rather go for the gold pot that Blizzard holds. But what some of these big companies are failing to understand is that if they would just try and make a good solid mmo much like what Star Vault is trying to make.. well then they would likely clearly OWN a smaller, but still very profitable portion of the mmo market that has been left deserted for YEARS. There is money to be made in this niche market, but every big company instead is battling it out with 1,000 other mmo's for the market WoW clearly owns.

I for one highly respect Star Vault for trying to corner the hungry hardcore PvP market that Ultima Online once delighted mmo fans with. The thrill of losing everything and the rewards of such a hardcore game has been missing from mmos for many, many years. I respect SV very much for at least attempting to bring it back and essentially come out with their own version of "Ultima Online 2".

You "hotbar-mashing, no-risk-at-all" fans can have your World of Warcraft 2 and Guild Wars 2 with prettier graphics and much more smooth and better oiled mmo games. I'm perfectly happy with a much buggier, much less streamlined mmo like Mortal Online. I will support them the best that I can. (as I think I have with countless hours already frapping and uploading videos and capturing live footage etc for the few fans MO might have)

I've learned that trolling a game you wish you could like just because it isn't the quality of WoW isn't the answer with Darkfall. Games like this need "supporters" not nay-sayers. If you guys really want a game like Mortal Online or Darkfall to be successful, constantly knocking it and the developers hard efforts is not the answer. It's EASY to find problems and bugs in a game like Mortal Online. But I'm telling you from experience that it truly is much more rewarding to support a game like this and actually see through the bugs at what exactly these guys are trying to pull off. And Mortal Online is actually brilliant at many levels. Perhaps if you'd stop mocking it, tearing it down, and trolling it, you might see a silver lining and/or have some fun with it. As I have definitely done in my couple of weeks with it already. I have honestly had more fun with this buggy beta then I have in my last six years or so with much prettier, much better coded games like WoW, GW, LoTRO, and soo many others.

Hmm... you used WoW or World of Warcraft at least 8 times in your reply.  This was page 4 and no one had even mentioned that game.  Why would you post such a long reply about WoW and make fun of it's fans?  That has nothing to do with the conversation and is in poor taste.

Just fixed one thing there for ya :).

I don't think it's that big companies *can't* do it. It's that they won't. Why? Because the big companies want the big money they'll get from the widest possible audience... which a MMO like MO or DF does not cater to. They will only go with the safest possible bet.

Were they to decide to develop something more in line with a UO or DF or MO, they would probably hire people with backgrounds and experience working on those types of MMOs.

It's no coincidence you only see companies like CCP, Aventurine, Starvault and the FallenEarth folks making games like this.

'course... I know I'm preaching to the choir here as you've been outspoken on that very issue for a while now, in the DF forums in particular.

Hes replying to the statement made earlier about why smaller companies are the only companies that will make a sandbox game, its simple WoW is the cash cow so now all developers are trying to take their chunk of the market by copying it. LoTRO, AoC, WaR, Allods Online, even EQ2 has been turning more into a WoW clone, making everything easy and watered down compared to EQ, theres a lot more games out there that continue to take the game structure of WoW and build their own game around it.

Your reply was reasoned and properly addressed the issue without attacking other games for no reason.  My response was to quotes such as:

"no risk, all reward" super easy WoW mmo culture"

    and

"we have all these WoW fans crying and QQ'ing and trolling the forums of any game that might require a little skill or something besides spamming the same 2 hotkeys over and over"

Your response was the correct way to explain your argument. The original I quoted was an unneeded attack on another game and playerbase.

lol... this game is so pathetic.. i'm sorry. i bought it for the beta.i sometimes wonder if the folks talking about the game on the official MO forums are either (1) paid to talk on the forums or (2) are playing a different game

seriously, i've spent countless hours trying to find something to do in the game... and, well, i have yet to find anything to do. read the quick guide and it tells you the first thing you should do is "find the smith to get your starter gear." what smith? i've spent hours upon hours exploring every single starter town and have not once found an NPC called "the smith." i've asked other players in the game where the smith is, and everyone ignores me. so if i cant find that guy, then where do i get my starter gear? and how do i progress? every starter town was void of mining or gathering nodes, and void of NPCs to fight and train.

this game is still YEARS away from completion.. not exaggerating...

    Thats an awesome video... :)

I love how the Author exposes daily flaws and makes little movies out of them. It seems many by-standers don't realize that something like that could last 3 hours, while the Dev's notice their errors. Yet are laughing about it in IRC, while the testers have fun making the mobs do crazy stuff.

This guy is using the weekly bugs as propaganda and many of you peeps are eating it up. I would've have thought, that by now most would understand these resident trolls as hoaxes.

If you want information, got Mortal Forums, the Dev's are answering question all the time. They aren't hiding anything from anyone. All their problems they speak about openly. Even StarVault admits not everything is going to be wrapped up, the exact day of release. But nobody is going to mind a few bigger patches after release to shore up, much of what left ot be done.

So don't be a lemming, join the Mortal Online community and find out for yourself, instead of from these trolls!!

You don't need to see any npc to get your starter gear. The rags and starter axe you are born in the game with are all you get.

This isn't the sorta game that so many are accustomed to in today's mmo generation.

There's no npcs selling cool weapons and armor. There's no npcs with gold, shiny explanation points and question marks over their head to give you some "Go kill X wolves" quests for rewards and experience.

There won't be an auction house or mail boxes to help you buy crap off ebay.

The gear is all player created from resources obtained from gathering skills such as mining, wood harvesting, and slaying and butchering animal and monster corpses. For example, even if you defeat a giant dragon, it's not gonna have 10,000 gold and ultra uber armor and a sword of dragon slaying on it's corpse. Instead, the butchering of the dragon corpse will reward a player with parts of the dragon such as the hyde for better armor or maybe bones or whatever.

This game isn't going to hold you by the hand. It's trying to be a "true sandbox" where you create your own experiences with much more freedom them most current mmo's would dare to give the players.

It's certainly not the type of mmo everybody will like, in fact it is a much more niche type of market that a game like this will appeal to.

But if you paid for the beta, and didn't know this ahead of time, then shame on you for not spending at least five minutes reading about it before you put down your hard earned dollar.

That's the problem with low budget companies.  They think they can compete against major players.  They go ahead and say, we gonna make a MMO, we have X amount of $$ to do it, if we can't make it will just lauch it anyway and make players pay so we can continue to fix it.

Ever heard company saying we gonna launch when it'S ready, now it's we gonna launch when we're out of cash.

I'm grateful Darkfall allowed itself to delay several times now that I see how shitty MO looks after being forced to release.

Im glad Im not the only one who thought that video looked completely retarded. Perhaps the developing company should make smaller games, build a reputation ( and a bank account), and then move on to a super ambitious project like this. Perhaps then Mortal Online could be released properly.

But nooooooooooo. They had to bite more than they could chew.

But what do I care anyway...
