Not so much innovative as in a completely different class, sharing almost no gameplay elements with any previous MMO
Eve seems like a typical MMO to me. You have gear you grind, your ship. You have an inventory. There's pvp. There are clans or guilds. I don't see a lot of innovation. You have your damage over time spells, your direct damage spells, your pets.
If I had to point out one thing that makes Eve different, I'd point to the complexity of some of the mechanics.
I didn't try it for very long. If you have a different opinion, please share.
I have to agree with the OP. It is hard to innovate in the genre because there are a lot of people who like to play these games in a certain way, you disrupt or change that they complain.
To make a good game in this genre you don't have to innovate, just use pieces and parts of previous games, everyone else copies, there is nothing wrong with it.
Personally I wish MMO's would drop the silly restricted class leveling system and adopt skill systems.
