Another potentiolly great IP goes down in flames...

I don't know what it is about Crypitic, but I really WANT them to suceed, despite their retarded MT policies and whatever, but they constantly fail to deliver anything with 'soul' or (for me) longevity.

This was their last chance with me as a customer tbh, I have finally let go of the fun first three months I spent in CoH at launch and come to the conclusion that they company is no longer capable of delivering the kind of game I am looking for.

I really don't understand Cryptic either. They continue to shoot themselves in the feet and actually make companies like SOE and EA look good.

I would cancel mine but I can not now that I used the Beta key. I will play the 30 days free (I hear there are changed with the released version) and I will see how that goes.

I take it you went download version?  You haven't gotten your retail product yet...you should be able to cancel if you want to.  Your card shouldn't even be billed until it ships.  Call your CC company for a chargeback if whoever you ordered from refuses a refund.

I'm a huge Trek geek.  I haven't cancelled yet, but am heavily leaning that way, and I know there are many people in the same boat.

Problem with Cryptic is they make games with really good Character customization but little in the way of content.

I enjoy playing the game, but after the news about them limiting skill points while having few character slots, along with the end game not sounding terribly interesting, I'm thinking this might be another MMO I pick up when it hits bargain bins.

They almost had me.  Even considered preordering(which I told myself I'd never do), but that bit of news sent the teeter totter back the other way.

No he really can't get his money back it is part of the beta agreement. Says something along the lines of once you use the beta key you are obligated to pay for the game.

Wait till they show how much the retcons are going to cost and they unvail that the only way your going to be able to correct a template you made with those limited skill points will only be purchaseable from there shop unless they do the exact same thing they have done with CO and have a method in game to retcon but just make the cost so high your most viable option is to buy it from there little item mall lol.

I find anything Cryptic has produced to date is lack luster.  Every single game they have blows.

While I have to agree that Cryptic makes games that I don't much care for (never enough depth, they make games, not worlds) there does seem to be qutie a few folks who also think its the greatest thing ever so I guess it suits their gaming play style.

But it is a shame to see IP after IP fail to reach the potential they could because developers insist on creating games instead of universes.

That's Correct, I already used the Beta Key they gave me. It is okay, maybe they will make all sorts of improvements to the game sometime. A least I will already have it. For one i know the interface is supposed to change for the actual release

IMO:  It has the fun factor of CoX and the bug factor of CO.  Tack onto that an almost necessity to buy things (char slots) from an item mall, that leans me toward waiting.  It's not so fun a game that patience goes out the window...

I don't know too much about STO, just played the beta for a few hours. Whats the problem with a limited amount of skillpoints?

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

So what ur telling me is that you are canceling ur pre order based on lvl 16, not able to access 95% of the content, and more so the fact that cryptic is being forced to release nearly 9 months earlier than planned because of atari.

If you want to bitch about lag new servers are on the way and will be implemented asap. Whats even funnier is all the lag issues will pretty much disapeer with the lvl cap being removed because then everyone wont be jammed into the same space. Cryptic is very capable, if you want someone to blame email call write a letter  harass bombard ATARI!!!

Have you played a Cryptic game?  By level 16 you have accessed 95% of the content.  It just ends up being recycled over and over again.  They don't actually add meaningful content to any of their games.

One reason NOT to go download version I guess, but what do you have to lose by calling your CC company?  Of course no company wants to give you your money back, but if make enough of a stink about something, you'd be surprised what can happen.

For the longest time, it was no cap...that is, you could eventually learn and max out every skill.  Making a last second change and hiding it on a 3rd party site is pretty shady.

Kind of like the whole CO 6 monthers and lifers have priority access to STO's closed beta debacle in which they informed those on the STO forums that there would be no priority access instead of telling us on CO even though we had CO subs and were told on CO's forums that we would have priority access. Welcome friend :)

The complaints about the number of Character slots is a joke IMO. If you want more than 3, why wouldn't you expect to pay more? At least they're offering the option without jacking you for the game again like most other MMOs.

Huh? Usually only sandbox games limit you THAT much in character slots.

  • olepiolepi Member EpicPosts: 3,064

The lack of character slots is telling. In CoH, I used up all 8 slots, and then used more on other servers. There were that many different power combinations to play with and experiment with. STO probably does not have that kind of variety, so they figured you only needed 3 slots.

But this is Cryptic, expect more major changes in the future.

If the additional character slots weren't wanted they wouldn't be selling them at all. There were times in MMOs when it didn't matter how many character slots you wanted, you had a set amount and that was unchanging.  Cryptic is expecting players to use their slots and most possibly want more.  If there are more classes and variations then there are slots to make characters, then they are hoping to make some additional money on slots.

    Most other MMO's??  Name Five.

No, most other MMO's give you 5 slots or more. Some few charge for extra slots or give them as a bonus for an upgraded subscription. Charging for a fourth slot + skill cap + charging full price subscription for another of their half assed attempts at game creation + RMT = Scheming greedy SPOS vendors or SGSPOSV

That is so true.  I remember CoH at 15 was the same CoH at the upper levels.  That was until they developed CoV which did add a bit of change.  So I guess that means people should buy STO and plan to play it a year or so later when it actually has longevity.

Better yet, don't buy it and wait for a year, then get it for under £10 and get a better experience when playing. By doing that you save money, maybe by then it will have either been a hit (good times because you got a good game for cheap) or a flop (good times because you saved a fortune by not buying a crap game). Could even become free to play by then.... or have closed down completely.

The way the gaming industry is now and will be in the future, you need a lot of patience, a large wallet or both.

Develop a game, strip it down to its bare bones, release it and then sell off the pieces that have been stripped away as DLC... after a year or so, rerelease game including all the DLC at the price it was first released...... $$$$$$Profit$$$$$$

Edit: Wow, that last paragraph sounded like an internal EA or Atari memo.......

Be paid for Beta Testing, don't pay to Beta Test.
