I can very strongly say after playing every p2p mmo but eve and planetside, that iv'e figured out why wow is so popular.
Simplicity
Why simplicity?
Look at All the MMO's that have come out since 2008 you need a up to date computer to play it.Most people i know have a Old Dell from the dude im getting a dell commercial.Which runs wow fine.
Then we have newer games which like for a person that does absolutely no fancy stuf on your computer (talking a P4 HT with no AGP or PCI-E slot here) they will make your computer explode...
Also the game play is for lack of a better term "Jack of all trades" good at all master of none. PvP is good if you just play for the occasional break in leveling.PvE is pve lol not like grind alot(Aion) or do Quests till your Eyes bleed(Lotro)Raiding is fun on a casual basis,And the crafting isn't mega time consuming(Aion)being Being ganked (asherons call and aion <..>)
Basically its your ultimate Pick up and Play MMO your old grandma can play it, without being super confused.
Dont get me wrong if you past a Casual Gamer like the guys that delete thier Character on youtube no clue why or the dudes on CODMW2 who have prestige rank 10 which is like damn .... its probably gonna get kinda dry and boring after a while.
Just so you know i play Age of Conan and other shooters and my Mother and sister play world of warcraft like a relaxed basis they just hit 80 after 5 months .This is no way shape or form a fanboy post cuz i like pretty much every(P2P) mmo ive ever played , just a opinion.

Thanks for telling us something we didn't know.
WoW is not for purists, its for people new to the genre.
Edit: WoW has more quests to complete than LOTRO while leveling. Just read more of your post.
If it was easy everyone would do it.

Not true at all pal people who like mmo's in general. The only game that is more complicated than WoW is Eve.
OP, your logic faisl on so many levels.
Want me to sum up all games that can run on low geared pcs, and see if they are as popular as wow ?
Wow is nr 1 because its the best for those 11m(aka 62% of mmo market)
Thanks for telling us something we didn't know.

just lawled at this statement
Any decent designer knows the value of accessibility. "minute to learn, lifetime to master" is a common saying, and rings true.
If you look at Chess, it's a game whose basic rules can be printed on a single sheet of paper -- yet despite that simplicity it's a game with tremendous depth. That's the hallmark of a great game: describing how to play can be done on a single sheet of paper, but describing how to play well takes many full-length books.
"What is truly revealing is his implication that believing something to be true is the same as it being true. [continue]" -John Oliver
How so? Or are you saying that EVE is also fairly simple?
The attraction of WoW is accessability. That also means not overly complicated play.
Thanks for telling us something we didn't know.

Very true, "pal".
If you like the idea of solo questing to the level cap, completely ignoring the whole "enjoy the ride and pride yourself on the adventure" just so you can grind the same raids once a week with others, go right ahead.
I on the other hand will choose other games that actually have a fun world and community to enjoy.
"The only game that is more complicated than WoW is Eve. "
I'm crying with tears of laughter from that quote. Don't talk about MMOs like you know anything, kid, just because you played WoW and EVE's trial.
I ant a fan boy of anything only game ill ever defend is hoverboard ASDF and i doubt anyone remembers that game
we all know wow holds your hand and can run on the worlds oldest computer therefor it is popular.
Whats more complicated than wow then? EQ2? No. LOTRO? No. EQ1? No. AoC? No. EVE probably is, but I've never played it.
I agree that one of the bigger reasons that WoW is so popular is that it's easy on the computer requirements side of things... but I can't understand, having played both of them, how you can say that LoTRO is "Quest till your eyes bleed" and WoW is not... lol... what else do you do in WoW when you're trying to level up? You quest. Till your eyes bleed. And I say this as someone who is currently subscribed to WoW. Heheh Like you though, I've played tons of P2P MMOs (although I wouldn't go so far as to say, "all"... have you seen the game list on this site?) I have played EQ, EQ2, Vangaurd, DAoC, EVE, WAR (regrettably), Horizons: Empire of Istaria (now known as Istaria: Chronicles of the Gifted), FFXI, LoTRO, CoH, CoV, Aion, Tabula Rasa, and DDO (when it was P2P), and enjoyed each for different reasons, with the exception of WAR and DDO, which I hated and didn't even play for a full month... Having said that, I think some other contributing factors to WoW's popularity are:
-It was the first to put together all of the pre-existing elements that it uses (quest-based leveling, instances, pvp, class-based characters, etc.) into the package that is currently the MMO standard; no one else before them had combined them in this way, and this combination turned out to work well.
-It is casual friendly. You can play for an hour a day, or 10 hours a day, it doesn't matter, you can still make progress.
-It has a huge playerbase. I know, this seems like circular reasoning; it has a huge playerbase because it has a huge playerbase? But population levels in an MMO gives us a "rich get richer, poor get poorer" scenario. The more subscribers you have, the more are going to stick around, because there are actually people to play with. How many times have you heard "x was a great game. I'd still be playing it now if there was anyone left / if it wasn't dead / if my friends were still playing."? This particular statement I see made most often about UO, DAoC, EQ, and sometimes, FFXI. WoW doesn't have this problem. It has been able to maintain it's large base of subscribers, if not grow them, and thus, it is easier for them to continue to do so.
-The Warcraft / Blizzard name. The Warcraft series and Blizzard, as a company, were already well known and popular when news of WoW's development started coming out. If nothing else, this drew Blizzard and Warcraft's already huge fanbase to try WoW. Of course, the product itself had to live up to live up to the expectations of the fans to keep them around, but the big initial bank of subscribers certainly didn't hurt.
-Instances. World of Warcraft may not have been the first to implement instances (I believe Everquest did it first, but may be wrong), but they were among the first few to use them; there wasn't much competition in the form of MMOs that used instancing at the time, much less MMOs that used them to tell the kinds of stories and create the kinds of epic encounters that Blizzard did. Blizzard didn't invent the instance, but they were one of the first to really tap into the potential of the instanced encounter.
-Did I mention it's casual friendly? It's casual friendly. Casual friendly was rare in MMOs at the time. It's everywhere now, but WoW has already established itself as a well-known casual MMO, so casual friendly LoTRO isn't going to compare to WoW (business-wise) nearly as much as WoW did to EQ or DAoC at release.
When it comes down to it, timing, presentation, and reputation did / does WoW craploads of good business-wise. Luckily, there is still some variety for those of us who don't like (or are tired of) the WoW-flavored barrage of MMOs that came afterward... even if it is scant. Personally, I don't stick with any MMO for more than a year, because there are so many different MMOs that I have fun with. I'll play WoW for awhile, and then switch to FFXI, and then DAoC, and then try something new, and then come back to WoW, or FFXI, etc... because each has its merits and I love them all for different reasons

What makes a game complicated to play?
I believe most of us are talking about the ease into learning how to play the game. WoW is one of the best at ease of play. We aren't talking about the top end pvp players or raids here. I feel those other games you mentioned have more variables that make it slightly more difficult for the new player to get into. Accessability is the key here, WoW is the most accessable of all the major mmos.
I'd say all those MMOS are more complicated than WoW.
Are you confusing depth for complexity?
WoW from levels 1- 80. Right click quest giver, spam 1-3 skills on target mob.
You've just reached the level cap.
Go do that in EQ2, LOTRO, EQ1, AoC, then come talk to me.
WoW is only the MMO I can THINK of(I could be wrong, point it out if I am) where you can make a character, and level from 1-80 using only the first two skills you start off with and just rank them up as you level.
WoW doesn't have 11m people playing so hush. Not to mention that how do you know 11m is 62% of how many people play mmo's.
Everyone has opinions, but does that make them the universal truth??? NO!
nha thats not it !wow was popular in 2004 because it ran on everything but since then everybody got at least a 06 computer (4 years old)wich makes it 64 bit and everybody got at least a 256 mb graphic card
what makes wow popular is more because of this:
oh dont really dig it but all the friends of my friends are on it so if i want to meet other gamer i got to go on it too!
thats all it is !
Eh,
WoW is WoW.
Its simple to learn and easy to play through. Endgame and arena are only hard in that it takes dedication and some basic math abilities, but its just enough to keep most people happy and playing/busy.
It takes aspects from every MMO ever made and reworks them to a bit more polished and functional state, making those mechanics sometimes more enjoyable than they were in previous games. The game holds peoples attention because its easy enough for casual players to have fun and advance while giving just enough content to keep the hardcore players busy and happy.
Its a game I can easily jump back into when I am bored and not have to worry about the struggle to get caught up, because getting back on par with everyone is easier than games like old school EQ where if you took a month off you were pretty much screwed.
I dont love the game and I dont hate the game. I like it for what it is.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

WoW is not for purists, i feel offended.
i've played countless MMO's, including MMo's before WoW..., YES WOW WASN't MY FIRST NOR MY SECOND NOR MY THIRD.
i play it for 5 years now with a 3 month break every year, usually... WoW is not for purists is just a way of saying that you can't handle that is has the most players......
i know its easy to learn, blablabla... but if you never dug deep into WoW because you are a hater, you'll never get a look beyond the casual gameplay, and i'm not just talking about simple raids...

http://www.wow.com/2009/11/13/blizzard-arenas-were-a-mistake/
Actually, you're right. It has more than 11 million.
You know wow isnt complicated because you can go dl a bot program for free that will run your characters in circles killing everything by essentially hack and slash and level you 1-80 while you sleep, then farm gold for you from that point on.
Wow is popular because it was/is a solid and fun MMO that came out at a great time. EQ was dying and badly needed a EQ 2 to come out instead of EQ 1 : expansion pack 32. It caught on like wildfire because of the generation that was getting into the age bracket to get into a MMO. When i picked up EQ as my first MMO i knew maybe 3 other people in my grade that played it, which was in large part due to the fact that i was into video games while most people my age didnt play video games because the market was still developing. When wow came out, everyone and their sister had a console and/or a pc. The video game market was growing like crazy and blizzard put out a solid product that got an entire generation locked into MMOs.
I think wow is getting into a similar situation that EQ got into where people are desperatly looking for the next big mmo to jump to, problem is they keep coming up as mediocre and somewhat flopping so people inevitably jump back to WoW when they need their MMO fix.
Eventually some company will get their head out of their *** and put out another EQ/WOW mmo that will sweep the market.
I would honestly love to see a solid game come around like shadowbane that has a wide open world, easy leveling ( because i honestly hate leveling more than anything in any game) and a lot of stuff to do. Games should focus more on endgame/character development than the punishment of making people spend the first few months of the game grinding to get to the point where they can actually play the game.

Where did I ever say i was a hater? I've played WoW for a long time also, but imo its not the best MMO out there.
I think anyone who is a fan of MMOs in general will understand that WoW isn't for purists. I don't care you're offended, just because you tried other MMOs and didn't like them but happen to love WoW doesn't make you a purist either.
See I can jump to conclusions too.
very true :P
I suppose, but really the only more complicated part about EQ2 is buying spells. Otherwise yea, you do the exact same thing in EQ2 to level as WoW but it takes longer. The same with LOTRO, although the LOTRO dungeons are perhaps harder. In EQ maybe its hard for the puller of a group, but definitely no one else. The tutorial (I only started playing once the tutorial was created) and after that you have 2 abilities so its really easy to ease on in. It just takes a LONG time to get anywhere. Not complicated.
Haters on this site will always make up things about why is so popular.
But there is only 1 reason, game is brilliant.
