If You Were To Choose Between FFXIV And Tera...

bronecarbronecar Member Posts: 685

I for one am waiting for both and I'll be able to purchase/sub just for one of them.

Surely, not all of you are interested in both. But what about those who are?

What would your pick be and why? :)

Considering this is the Final Fantasy XIV Forum I'm gonna take a wild guess and say 99.99% of the replies will say Final Fantasy...

See my response to this same thread that's in the TERA site.

I have absolutely no interest in Tera.

Tera is an unknown commodity at this point.

If one were to give me the choice I would have to say Final Fantasy (if those were the only two choices) as there is a long tradition of final fantasy games.

And though some of Blue Hole worked on Lineage 2 we dont' really know what they will create. Will it have depth regarding the world?

    edit;

    let's put it this way, this is some footage of beta play;

    www.youtube.com/watch

I'm already doing this in other games. So if I was to pick I would say Final Fantasy as at least there is quite a bit of lore to the series.

for me this is a no brainer its ffxiv because:

Developer: Square Enix is well known and has proved itself over and over, and even already has a highly successful MMO  out. Tera is developed by Bluehole studios, whos that? what have they accomplished? not a damn thing.

Gaming style: FFXIV comes out of Japan, TERA comes out of Korea, do I need to say more on this subject?

Graphics: Tera like most korean MMO's are overly extravigant, while ffxiv looks more sensable.

PvP: ffxiv has no pvp while tera is going to have all the same problem as the past games with the pvp issues.

These are probably my top 4 reason why I choose ffxiv over Tera. If someone doesnt agree with me thats fine because these are all my opinions.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

I am a die hard final fantasy fan, but I did my research on Tera a while back and I am definitely going to preorder Tera alongside my FFXIV copy. I don't know how I'm going to fare this year as so many good things are coming out for the PS3 and PC...I'm going to have to build a time travel machine so as to slow everything in the world while keeping my room functioning at normal time.

That's it in a nutshell. SE has been successful at almost everything it's touched. I am highly doubtful that this FF will fail to deliver. If  it does I am about done with MMOs and I KNOW SE doesn't want ME to quit gaming.

    FFXIV.

I will never ever ever ever ever be fooled again into playing a MMO with any sort of PvP. I have learned my lesson from WAR, AoC, Aion, WoW, LOTRO, etc.

If i want to play a PvP game then it wont be a MMO.

whichever comes first but Tera looks more intense and gratifying.

  • ProfRedProfRed Member UncommonPosts: 3,495

Korean games just haven't ever been all that fun, and have a horrendous, ridiculous, and mindnumbingly absurd grind.  At least the grind in FFXI was with friends and there was a hugely deep world with an involved story and tons of quests and adventures.  Korean games = almost empty world, the lamest npc's ever, hardly any story, and the shallowest feeling.  There is grind, gear, and graphics.

Terra looks like it would be fun for 50 hours max.

Mabinogi was one of the few exceptions.  Tera I don't think will be at all.  At least Lineage had some good PvP if you could handle the grind.. which took a no life devotion.

    1) Crutches like levels and gear deciding who wins.

    2) 9/10 times the only real strategy is zerging.

    3) Impossible task of balancing classes in a PvE and PvP game.  Not all classes (pure tanks & healers, for instance) are suited for both PvE and PvP.

    4) The never-ending cycle of nerfing/buffing because class X pwned class Y.

DAoC was a notably exception to those rules, but Mythic already proved that replicating that implementation is next to impossible today because of the damage that WoW has done to the genre (and I mean that with all seriousness).

And don't forget that people who hide behind an anonymous avatar are typically fucktard and will prey on the weak that have no chance of defending themselves because it makes them feel better and not for the advancement of their character or faction in the PvP Realm.

So you're dumping PvP altogether from now on? Sounds a bit  harsh to me. I'm no PvP freak, but there's nothing like the constant pressure of hunting and feeling hunted at the same time ;)

ditto.  Feel the same way and I'll wait till I play beta's or something along those lines.  Leaning towards TERA, but who knows.

Its not that i hate PvP, quite the opposite actually. Its just that i hate PvP in todays MMOs. There is not one MMO past, present or future that will have PvP fun and worth engaging in for more then 10 hours. The same tactics and mechanics are used all the time...its just lost its thrill for me :(.

The only PvP i have ever enjoyed has been in non-MMO games, such as Counterstrike or something like that. Guess its just a personal preference :P

I'd go along which whatever game is worth the subscription fee overall. Though right now Tera is appealing to me more due to the availability of PvP.

After getting to try TERA in a focus group test I've already decided that I will play it. It's insanely fun just to kill monsters in the game and it has all of the basic necessities that MMOs need already all it needs is to be finished and localized properly. I'm definitely going to buy TERA no matter what.

But nonetheless I still hope I will get a chance to try out FFXIV in a beta to see if I like the game or not. Final Fantasy games are very rich in lore and like it's been mentioned before Square Enix always pulls through when they make something and it always ends up a spectacular game. However that doesn't mean it will be a good game but I'll be crossing my fingers that FFXIV will be a good game and maybe I will play it alongside TERA.

I forgot to answer the original question. Right now TERA looks the most promising but there's no way to know really.

It's good to know TERA delivers in terms of gameplay and combat mechanics.

Shame they were recently put under trial and lost, especially since the Lineage 3 project was canceled and not put on hold. I mean it was a dead end for NC Soft.

But hopefully TERA will move on ;)
