Why I'm finally sold on Darkfall

EldaerEldaer Member Posts: 21

So after a significant amount of research as of late, I've decided to jump into the world of Darkfall. This recent research has been conducted after the dust has settled on what should be seen as a rough launch to say the least. I had high expectations at launch for this game and was left with disappointment and decided that it would be better to hold off until I saw improvement. That time is now.

The game has slowly but surely fleshed out a game in order for it to reach part of its possibly massive potential. Graphics are being updated (the patch today made my decision to buy this game tonight). Mechanics are being polished. The NA server (from what I've read) is fairly established and ready for some real excitement. I can not say enough of how much a "Sandbox" MMO appeals to me. In an increasingly instanced genre, its incredibly refreshing to have a huge persistent online world that has (increasing) potential and an almost assuredly increasing population.

Easily the best MMO I've ever played was EverQuest. There was an unmatched sense of community and a very important duty to maintain one's reputation through the practice of ethics and morality online. Being accountable for your actions is something most MMO's don't honor anymore (WoW comes to mind -- even after the most appalling of offenses you can transfer servers for minimal $$ and start anew). In addition to this, there was also a cold, harsh and unforgiving nature in EQ that would punish you heavily for death or being careless when attacking a high level mob or entering a dungeon of any kind. Darkfall honors this "think twice" mentality by creating a high-risk scenario when you fail to visit the bank on a regular basis for fear of getting ganked and losing it all. Since these forums tend to overuse the term "carebear" I'll refrain from using it (although I technically just did). But in a lot of other games, things are given to you too easily. There are little repercussions for dumb moves. Leveling happens too quickly. I could go on, but Darkfall seems to understand the ideaology that a lot of the MMO community looks for -- a sense of accomplishment. Don't give me 20 "purpz" with minimal effort. Make me work hard to earn an item and then let me bask in the glory of an accomplishment.

Also I read an interesting thread on the DF forums of people arguing on the topic of Free Trials. After hearing arguments on both sides I must say there were some things I hadn't considered and agree with those who say free trials has the potential to harm the integrity a game. I don't want to go into detail on this, but it's just another example of Darkfall calling the right play in not offering free trials that I respect.

I want to keep this relatively short, but I just wanted to say I love where this game is headed. After a seemingly very rough start, the game base seems to be revitalized. A game I thought was dead in the water initially has become the most appealing MMO to me in a long time and I plan on enjoying this leap into Darkfall.

Darkfall is a game I've always wanted to try, but when I hear about the constant high level(skill) griefing and the "click click click click click" melee combat with zero skills associated with it(tell me if I'm wrong), and that archery and magic will almost always beat out melee, I just have no interest.

Well you clearly already made up your mind pulling negativity from multiple sources and only focusing on that.  There is so much more to the game than you can comprehend.  So +1 for nice trolling.  Enjoy your negative lifestyle my friend.

I've been watching posts on this website about Darkfall since about Nov 2009. During that time I was playing Aion and enjoying it although the grind and "same old same old' feeling was starting to get to me. I played all kinds of MMOs in the last 2-3 years, including LOTRO, WoW, AoC, WAR, Aion to name afew. Not until I finally took the plunge into Darkfall about 2-3 weeks ago did I realize what I was missing...although from what I've read waiting until Darkfalls bad launch was sorted out was a good thing.

Darkfall gives me the same feeling I had I first tried a mmorpg (EQ1). It amazes me that after playing all these themepark MMOs I didnt take the time to try a sandbox for a change. Instead I kept spending money on MMOs that were the basically the bs with a different cover and graphics. Darkfall is different then the mainstream MMOs out now and for that reason I expect it to keep me busy for a very long time. Not only that but I have much respect for a company that can turn a game around from a horrible launch and bring new life to it.

I can honestly say Darkfall is probly my best MMO experience to date ( i wasn't into MMOs during the DAoC and UO) mainly becuase I've never truly experienced a real sandbox MMO...I gotta say, I'm hooked! lol

    Sandbox FTW!

I guess some people prefer theme parks but I can't understand why lol.

You guys are starting at a good time leading up to DF 2010.  You will be just seasoned enough to do to the new players coming in what is going to be done to you haha.  It's a vicious cycle.

Those are valid concerns for the game. In a very heavily PvP based game like this one, griefing is inevitable. I played WoW on a PvP server and have been the victim of this. I have also been the one griefing. Sometimes hours on end. Darkfall I can only assume will be similar but on steroids. But what you consider a negative I see as an exhilarating positive. What better way to become fully immersed in the game than to be constantly on your toes and to consider every move carefully? If you venture far away from your home city with gold in your bags, its a very exciting risk you take. If you lose it all, you've learned your lesson.

As far as a multi-click combat system...would you prefer hitting different numbers instead? (WoW, EQ). Or maybe Global Agenda is for you? GA though doesn't recognize headshots which is silly. As far as having no skills involved with combat, I think watching a PvP video from DF would dispel that theory. AFAIK you have the ability to block, dodge and evade in combat. With these mechanics there simply has to be skill involved in combat.

    Welcome to Darkfall.

    NA-1 just had WWI.

On the weekend NA-1 will have its first dynamic lore event so read up on it.  Make some friends and join in.

What are you shooting him down for? He's merely being carefull about what he is spending his money on. I mean, it's not like DF has a free trial, right? I'd try it if it had one.

    If anyone is trolling........

Thanks for not stating ANYTHING that could've proved my "negativity" wrong and turned it into something positive. There's a reason I stated "tell me if I'm wrong". But you didn't, you called me a troll and told me to move on. That's a good way to win people over to the game, or perhaps what I said was right? I dunno, maybe.

Lol archery and magic dont beat melee, whoever told you that is either 1. stupid and cant play 2. dont know how to melee 3. retarded.

Mount owns magic, When a melee gets into close range they own mages and archers,

The melee combat has gotten better, it is not realistic, but it is not click click click like the people who never played dfo before trolled you with, melee takes skill in timing predicting and evading and blocking and jumping and side stepping and double jumping and hitting the back, doesnt sound like click click to me.

Btw I proved you wrong, the people who told you that trolled you, welcome to the mmorpg.com forums for DFO.

Although I see it as a train I can't stop before it hits the cow, please try and keep my thread to honest, wholesome opinions rather than a "dont troll you carebear wannabe newb" thread. MMORPG.com already has 10,000 too many of those.

Hitting different numbers that do different things is more excited than one click that just swings my weapon is my point.

Hitting the different numbers at the right times in certain situations is what makes hitting those buttons interesting.

It's the same reason Oblivion's melee combat isn't super fun either. I found magic and archery really fun though.

Dude, your statement is just as valid as the ones you claim are trolling. Again, if it only had a trial :).

So melee combat is moving your character and left clicking?

How's that different from click click click click click?

All the videos that people link of fun raids just show people swinging their melee weapons by clicking until the enemy is dead. How is that different from what I've stated?

Keep it cool with the anti-trolling Izure, you wont make many fans of the game that way.

Just post the facts and keep it light on name calling, let the infidels change their own minds gradually.

If I had made up my mind, I wouldn't be asked to be proved wrong.

If someone can reasonably explain to me why melee combat doesn't involve just left clicking to swing your weapon and kill your target, then I'll be sure to spread the word that melee combat isn't just click click click click click.

Positioning your character is done in many MMOs, I hardly consider that work or part of the fight process that doesn't involve "click click click". Positioning is something that should come natural, and should already be understood. Telling me you have to move your character to fight and avoid attacks tells me nothing that anyone who has ever played a 3rd person game doesn't already know...or a 1st person game for that matter.

In regards to the free trial issue...all of that crap about maintaining the integrity of the game is total BS. I don't buy any game without a demo, whether it be single player or online. It's just not smart. I don't have a lot of money to throw around for games I don't enjoy playing. Without a demo you are basically buying a game based solely on hype and advertising. DarkFall may be awesome, but until there is a free trial I won't be trying it.

  • Armisael191Armisael191 Member Posts: 162

I think a free trial would do this game good, there'd be lots of newbies to group with to help fend off gankers...of course then again, gankers would also run more rampant I suppose.

You can power attack, whirlwind, knockback, sieze weapon, overhand chop, parry, disabling blow, jump and of coarse click, click, click.  To close range you may want to have sword and board to block since it is better than weapon parry.  You've got your double jump or sidestep.  A little distance you may want to heal up, replenish mana or stamina and shoot with bow.  It is very involving unlike many other games that I have played.

You have to aim, you aim for the backs, you have to predict where he will move, Name me a game that isnt click click click the way you making it out to believe and I will think you are smarter then a 3rd grader.

You have special skills as well, like power shot, whirlwind, knockback* great when on a hill to give them extra damage, you have disabling blow when they are parrying, you also have mount combat, switching side to side, kick with the back of your horse, then you got the crouching/jumping doublejump/sidestepping in the mix,THIS IS A MMORPG WITH FPS COMBAT.

If that does not explain why it is not just click click click, then you are hopeless.

I understand you'd like a free trial to test out the game to see if its worth the money. I really do. But I'm not sure you're fully aware of what a free trial could potentially do to harm the game. Again, read the DFO forums for more info on some really compelling arguments.

And just as another example, EverQuest didn't have a free trial and is widely considered to be one of the most successful MMO's of all time. WoW is highest in subscriptions, but total players does not directly equate to "success" in my opinion. If you don't want to pay the money and risk it, that's ok. But respect the fact that they don't and just move on.

I think a free trial,l that has a dedicated server 1 world island would be nice, but a free trial with the main world would cause the game harm IMO,
