That would be something really interesting. I'm just thinking about the combat system though.. What would it look like? And would they use Oblivion graphics? 'cause that could be something.. Any, if they ever release this, oh my, i'm going right on Vvardenfell!!
Eagerly waiting but also afraid they screw up the franchise, but they'll prolly get a good job if they have a team with a knowledge based on MMOG's. Good luck Bethesda (if it were true)
obliv is a great game but they stuffed up so much with it and missed out so much. Lucky with modding you can fix and enhance the game to what it should have been. It's twice as good with a few good mods.
UI was a nightmare
leveling system is poor
lots of lazy models, graphics, animations
poor balance in some areas
that stuff is fine in single player, the lore & open world made the game. But in an MMO they would ahve to do much better with the little things.
100's of devs and only 10's of millions of dollars, an MMO does not make... not even close!
I appreciate your opinion, but I have to say I believe your remarks are a bit stupid.
Of course any MMO can fail, no exception, but comparing Bethesda who sold tenth of millions of games with Funcom who only previous serious project was AO, are a bit out of place.
Bethesda is the only big indipendent developer left, since Bioware has been aquired by EA.
Being their own owners, they still think like an indie but they have the money and experience of a big studio, like Bioware and Bllizzard.

To me a TES MMO have all the recipe of success
I agree as long as ZeniMax Media stays private, Bethesda or any of its other studios should still retain the indie studio spirit. But from my understanding, the article is pretty wrong on the account that Bethesda itself is developing the MMO. It's not. ZeniMax Online Studios is. It is a separate studio from Bethesda created by parent company ZeniMax Media. Although there is sure to be collaborative work, perhaps even some crossover, it is still an entirely separate studio from Bethesda.
Perhaps that's just nitpicking because it's all owned by the same people, but that's the corporate shell game for ya. I still think its an important distinction though, as the actual developers of Morrowind and Oblivion are not entirely the same people as ZeniMax Online Studios.
I cant work up ANY enthusasm for this project. Bethesda games have been going steadily downhill with each new release. Take a look at daggerfall,morrowind,oblivion,fallout3 each release has had less story/plot from the previous game. I suspect the next game they make will not even bother with a plot or storyline.
Totally Agree its like all these new games are Graphics junkies dreams, but plot /storyline is like "whats plot and storyline when you have graphics" sad as in my opinion. I'd be happy with 1995-2000 graphics if the game was fun to play.
Elderscrolls should always remain a single play RPG.
Change it to an MMORPG and you'd have to gut most of the features that makes Elderscrolls what it is. How do people not realize this?
Can you have an MMO where you can kill all NPCs and they stay dead? No. Can you have highly detailed intricate quest lines that change the game world based upon the players actions? No, unless you just put everyone in an instance, then what is the bloody point of an MMO.
I can see Elderscrolls as a coop RPG at most, NOT an MMORPG.
I agree with the spirit that TES should remain single player.
There's so many few single player PC RPGs left I don't need another one robbed from me.
The sad thing is we'll see cries against soloers even though the franchise was single player. The same hijack we saw in Final Fantasy.
@Orious's "Take final fantasy for example. They have mmos and single player games." line.
On the flip side of your argument you have Blizzard who has never published another Warcraft strategy game since launching their MMO World of Warcraft after Warcraft 3.
I think there is cause for concern here, especially when pro-groupers like to constantly rag on soloists wishing to have a choice. This is sad considering the franchise had solo content.
Edit: Clarification of WoW being a MMO and noting Warcraft 3
The MMORPG genre doesn't need another High-Fantasy themed game. Seriously Blizzard has that more than covered...unfortunately. Look at the mediocre success of both Age of Conan and Warhammer. Next to LoTR probably the two most popular high fantasy IPs. What does Bethesda really think they can accomplish that Mythic and Funcom couldn't? And Turbine for that matter. Or are they just planning for mediocre success as well? Skill based progression, yes. Sandbox, yes. High Fantasy, no.
to me it does.
I have yet to play a fantasy game that has what I want and that has it done well to my tastes.
Blizzard has it covered? ugh. Sorry but I can't play Wow. It is NOT what I want in a fantasy game. This is not to say that it isn't a well done game but to my taste it is too silly.
EQ 2 is too cute for me.
Vanguard is much closer but the avatars aren't great and who knows how long it has to last.
LOTRO? Again, hate the Avatars and though I have enjoyed it, it doesn't coincide with what I want from a LOTRO mmo.
I have enjoyed Aion and Lineage 2 but I want something more in the line of what Morrowind or Oblivion offered but on a larger scale.
I don't want to take a quest to kill 10 wombats. I want to explore and discover vast ruins, Caverns and kingdoms. I want to plunder tombs, fight dragons, slay demons and look good doing it.
I want a huge world like Vanguard, quests more along the line of morrowind or oblivion and until a game comes out that can give me that then I will patiently wait.
Hopefully, if Bethesda is really making a an mmo it will have those features. We'll see.
And to be honest, I have abolutely NO interest in a sci fi mmo. so I probably fall into the demographic for those who play fantasy mmo's.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Well said mate. The fact that Lotro,Aoc came and launched doesnt mean that they delivered whatmost expected and thats why they remained low on subs.
What really is missing from the market is a sandbox ,with huge world to explore,to get the adventruing/exploring fewling, something like DF but better made, with higher quality standards,(oblivion combat is perfect),also Elder's scrolls Lore is just awesome also,so what remains is to be seen..
As for wow dear Alienshirt ,right now WOW is a game where u just login and join queqes in tool NOTHING TO do with fantasy games.Wow right now has become a completely synthetic game.No adventuring at all, none bothers to go to the wilds after he gets lvl cap, lvling itself is a has to be done boring obligation, so u can start gear up in heroics and raids in lvl 80 as fast as u can . Blizzard comletely screwed wow.And the only reason that has and will have millions of subs is that there will be always around the world around 10 million kids between 12-18 y old, that never had the chance to taste games like Baldur's gate, Morrorwind, UO so that they can feel what Gameplay, truly Ethistic games are all about, and therefore they all jump to wow. Simple as that.
I was waiting for an unofficially official announcement about this project ever since Bethesda registered the Elder Scrolls online website domain. I have no clue how they would begin to implement an Elder Scrolls game into an MMORPG setting but if they can pull it off I'll be there in a heartbeat. I do have a bit of a fear about the "World of Warcraft style MMOG" comment, however. I'm hoping that is just a placement used as a reference to MMORPG's in general since it would be identifiable to more people and not showing huge similarities (see: clone). Who knows, I certainly do not. I'll continue to keep my eyes on Bethesda and wait rather impatiently for the officially official announcement of the project.
I agree with you completely, hopefuly its done well, and if so ill be there, but i honestly i couldnt stand a wow like mmo again, so hopefully it will be brilliant, thats if they are making it haha

It is obviosly a message to attract all TES fans who do not know what a MMORPG is.
I believe Bethesda can pull off the best fantasy MMORPG ever, and it will be a sandbox most probably or an hybrid.

All I can say is...
It's about damn time.
Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising everytime we fall.
I'd love a Elder Scrolls MMO!
