The only 2 MMOs currently on shelves that are worth any sort of personal time investment towards in-game progression are EvE and FFXI- both of which remained true to their roots throughout their years. Most others that stood strong eventually tried to be something they weren't, and ended up sucking.
At least Castle-Age doesn't go around pretending it's worthy of any sort of subscription, and the mechanics are so ambiguous and flawed to begin with... there's fun to be had in care abandon.
That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc. We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be. So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away. - MMO_Doubter
Well, I'm 40 and I can't find a game either. EVE is by far, the best MMO on the market, but I'm sick of it. been playing on and off for years. tried SWG again..fail. their GCW update is..fail. I tried face of mankind, and OH MY GOD THE GANKING. Done with that, it's a FFA beyond belief. I want to try STO, but it's not full grown yet. Needs to simmer in the pot a couple more months before it's really ready(although some people plunked down damn near 300 bucks for a lifetime sub, and half the PVE, the klingon half, isn't even in the game yet). I can't do another fantasy game. If I see one..more..fucking..elf, I will go postal. Gnomes too, I hate those creepy little motherfuckers. I don't want to swing the sword of awesomeness I want an MMO that a grown adult can enjoy, with pvp/pve that doesn't make me want to put an icepick through my eyesocket. Is that so much to fucking ask?..gah.!!!
:Brofist:
EVE is awesome, but it's god damb hard work also. But seriously, what else is there once you've gotten used to that level of complexity? All the others seem, well... superficial? Shallow?

The problem is, EVE is only awesome if that's the kind of game you're looking for. For those of us who are older and who just don't have the time to put in that kind of hard work, who are just looking for something to have a good time with, EVE really isn't that great of a game.
I'll be 40 shortly and currently I am playing Allods online. I enjoy the game as it's somewhat slower paced, no forced PvP now. It may be my "next" game or it'll just hold me over till the next Final Fantasy game comes out.
But how old are you and what have you been playing anyhow? How old can you be to use "their" instead of "they're"?(lol)
Strangely, I thought trends were towards open PVP with high death penalties and towards massive raid groupings. I have heard complaints from ppl who want more fps with detailed combat moves. But I tend to agree; the new games don't call out to me like LOTRO did.
Anyhow, what do I know at my age.
Have most recently spent some time with Runes of Magic, Gates of Anderon and the Vanguard demo. It seems like everyone has their own game to recommend, some OK and some not for certain tastes at all. I have an extensive list but unfortunately, there is nothing to say how long or how enjoyable.
So right now I am playing Atlantica Online, having avoided it in the past because it was "turn-based". But now my curiosity got the best of me and it turned out to be more amusing and fun than I had anticipated. Also, you can do PVP in an arena at pretty much a fixed rate of speed, at no death risk, and you get ranked so no worries there either. I am not saying it is a very good game, I could list flaws, but won't get into that here. You might try it for the novelty while looking for a more permanent place to live.

You can't have it both ways. If you want to have intensity and complexity in your game, you need commitment unless you're going to play it at the most superficial level. EVE is awesome, but it's only awesome for people who are prepared to deal with it.
I don't think older players get worse at games at all, apart from the inevitable loss of reaction time. It's just that as they grow older they don't care as much. MMOs are a type of game that strongly rewards caring about playing them. As with just about anything, you get out what you put in, and you're never going to get many awesome thrills out of an MMO that you dip in to every now and then on a casual basis and don't really care that much about. Go watch a film.
Twitchy MMOs will likely never become fully mainstream. They're still too difficult to pull off with consistency. The internet just isn't reliable enough yet. It'll be a long time yet before we see an MMO with a combat system like Ninja Gaiden. FPS MMOs will definitely become more prevalent over time.
There will always be a place for the slower paced MMO as that is the primary template that MMOs were built off of.
I know just what the OP means. I've been searching for a games in development that will challenge me in mental ways, draw me into the world, give me engaging quests and de-emphasize the twitchy game play and ganking my fellows. I have found hope in a game under development that may change the way MMOs work. Instead of going back to EQ1 (which I played) Citadel of Sorcery seems to be going forward into a world even more suited to what the OP wants.
CoS looks like it has an emphasis on content driven questing, rather than task based or PVP based. But... if you are looking for something right now... this won't be it. From what I've gathered in reading it's still got a long way to go in development. The screenshots are only prototype (though a few morons are carping about them without reading). But the game design is the most promising thing I've seen... well, anywhere. I've officially become a fan, when I'm usually only grinding my teeth about most of the MMO designs I play.
So don't put yourself out to pasture quite yet... hang on, help is on it's way. If Citadel of Sorcery would just hurry up. (There I go bitching again).

It's more a matter that as people grow up, get jobs, have families, they just don't have time to spend hour after hour sitting in front of a computer screen playing games. That's reality. Whether you like it or not, the average age of the MMO gamer is going up, not down and therefore games, if they want to be successful, are going to have to cater to a more casual, short-time player who wants to get on, play for a little while, accomplish something, then get off and go back to real life.

pretty much. EVE spoiled me by making me think and giving me consequences. Now, when I play a game that doesn't do that, I get bored. quick. On another note, I grabbed the STO preorder against my better judgement. I've still got 3 hours of patching to go, the servers have crashed 3 times in the last 2 days(reading the STO forums in the meantime), and, as I type this, there's a login queue with 2,000 people trying to get in to play, but can't. Epic failure on cyrptic's part, and they aren't even telling people what's going on. I need a beer..
