I hope no one assumes I smoke and drink because I don't.. wouldn't be very good example if I did.
Dustin
No no, I didn't assume that
Its just in most cases, there's something.
I think most families (that budget) allow so much money for entertainment. Games are my entertainment when the kids aren't around.. I don't do much else. and its cheaper than everything else. Even going to the movies once a week
Well, my incom is somwher a round 2000-2500dollars after tax, not much in norway realy,so to pay for my mmo gaming im working .. hrm,, (svart) black. and belive me,, as a electrician, i got tons of work:D so i can do as i like when it comes to games(as long as my Wife is ok whit it,,, hehe:D
Honestly my MMO habit is easily the least expensive thing going. Can't go to the movies nightly for $15 a month or TV or clubs or drugs or single player games or read books or or or. Some people pay $100+ to watch someone else play a sport month after month, $15 is nothing ESPECIALLY in this economy. Mortgage, $1500 a month, car... $630, MMO $15... um ya not sweating it.
I generally wait several months before I buy... once the box costs about the same as the first month, I consider buying if I can at least get a months enjoyment out of it. And seeing as how most games have welcome back weekends, I find myself with alot of choices at any given time.
Full time, I have LotRO at $30 per 3 months, and I recently caved in when I said I wouldn't and bought STO. I'll probably play that a bunch for a few months and unsub, to return on occasion when they hand out freebie weekends.
So, though I have a good bit of access to lots of different games here and there, I'm really not spending much per month. The most subs I EVER keep going is 2.
Hello, This may sound like a real dumb question but I see how several people are playing several different subscription based MMOs. How does one afford that? 10-15 dollars a month per game on top of all your other bills. I am not judging by no means, just curious. I am 26 year old minister with a working wife and a 1 year old daughter, and in today's economy we have a hard time making ends meet; so it is quite shocking for me to see people who play like three or four different MMOs. I can understand paying to play one but several just blows my mind.

Hey Dustin...
As soon as I saw that you were a minister and one with a family I said "Ah HA!"
The wife of a friend of mine is a minister's daughter and she has regaled me with tales of growing up, living in the church's housing and essentially having a good life albeit a more poor one.
My thought is that in some ways you have answered yoru own question.
Part of it is the choices that one makes.
So not only have you embarked upoin a career that is not about making money and more about a calling but you have chosen to have a family as well. Now, not every family has to have yachts, huge houses and family vacations and children can be just about as happy just to have a great family life and good friends. Of course there are some societal pressures but i have found that more often than not, most families who are not in the top tax brackets made due with less but in some ways had more.
I imagine for other people they make similiar decisions. The least of them being "I won't go out and spend a lot of money and will instead spend money on my games".
Some people have jobs that make more than enough money to support many games and of course enough not to even care fi they have 4 or 5 of them and don't always play them.
As for me, my decisions play a part in my gaming because I have chosen (and taken steps ) not to have a family and to keep my debt very low to non-existent. I live in a horrible little apartment at the edge of a very nice neighborhood that is between everything I could want to get to yet I pay about half what others would pay for an apartment in the same area.
Because of this I can be more free to use my money to save, pay bills and then to enjoy myself how I see fit.
Of course I wont' have what others have such as huge mansions or yachts or many vacations every year, nor will I have a loving family who will feed me pudding in my elder years, but none of that is really that important to me as I enjoy my social life, going out to theater and concerts and great resaurants and of course having 2 or 3 games that I play a bit.
In the end it's all about life choices.
edit: oh and dont' have or need a car as you really dont' need one in the city. So no dollars spent on that and no waste of time taking one to the shop.

The minister (and his family) at my church appears to do quite well if his wardrobe and lifestyle are any indication.
As well he should, it is a more than full time position with activities going on almost 7 days a week, sort of like running a decent sized company (we have several thousand members at any one service).
Being a minister might not entitle you to CEO bonuses, but no need to take a vow of poverty either.

It isn't really a vow of poverty but I work at a very poor small country church. Personally I do think some ministers get paid more than they should. When they have members of their church poor and suffering and wear 3 piece suits every day and have multi-million dollar homes, then I feel something is wrong there. Would I like to be paid yes I would but I understand that my church can not afford to do so. It is great if your congregation can afford to pay him and everyone does alright that is great. I do see some people go into the ministry for the wrong reasons though, to take advantage of there people and to make money not to serve as Christ serves etc.. Anyways I also see more important things to do with my money than play MMOs I suppose. Which is the main difference. I do think it is great for people to have entertainment, and if it was in our budget I would most likely subscribe to something that really caught my eye. I do also feel like though sometimes we as people focus to much on entertainment of our self and of others than other things. A person can be a glutton and take anything to extreme which I worry about some people doing with their entertainment. I knew a man who played a mmo but couldn't pay his bills, but still plays that mmo. Well I must be going for now.
I'm single, no children, no debts and I make over $60k a year. I pretty much buy what I want, when I want and I'm still able to put money aside for retirement. If I had children or bills above and beyond what I have now (basic stuff like rent, cable, heat etc.) I'd budget my money differently. Its all about priorities and money management.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
I work full time, have a boyfriend who plays MMOs, I don't drink alcohol or smoke. I don't have expensive taste in clothes.
My biggest expenses are the internet ($100 per month between myself and boyfriend), and my MMO subs. Having said that I do try to only subscribe to those I actually play.
Hence atm - WoW, EvE, and Vanguard active with AoC and EQ2 on the backburner. And I'm sticking to one account per game instead of the 2 for WoW and EvE that I used to have.

Between you and I....many, many differences.
First of all, all three of our children are grown (we're in our mid-late 40s). Just cutting out that expense ALONE affords you a lot of extra cash. I was actually AMAZED when we didn't have 3 kids eating at home and needing gas money and activity money for this, that, and the other thing.
Secondly, we have NO debt. Credit card debt, if you have it, can eat you out of house and home...literally.
Thirdly, we have 2 incomes, our vehicles are both 4-6 years old and paid for, so we only carry liability insurance on them. And we really only use one of them at a time. I'm retired and work from home, which means...not a lot of gasoline expenditure for my part of the income.
Honestly...the biggest difference, I would bet, between you and most of the people on these forums...is children. And honestly...being a minister is a noble job (or even in some cases, a calling), but it's not known for being great on the income end of things...much like teachers.
Your monthly diaper bill ALONE....is probably about as much as our electric bill. We have a 2 bedroom townhouse. We moved from a house to a smaller place, because we didn't NEED all that space anymore without the kids, and we cut our house payments in HALF when we did that.
Oh and also....we don't go "out" a lot. We never ever ever go out to movies. We have Netflix and watch a TON of movies, but...we watch them at home. We also aren't big on going out to eat. We probably go out to eat dinner maybe once a month.

Rest assured that it is now my duty to rid cyberspace of all enemies...foreign and domistic. In retirement...it is good to be da king. subbed: WOW, Eve, STO and jumping back and forth with AOC and SWG...its not just a job, its an...well you know
The job i have right now does not pay a whole lot. And because i dont have alot of free money to spend on entertainment i play MMO's as they are by far the cheapest type of entertainment.
I play about 3 hours of MMO's 5 times a week (on average - sometimes if im not OT on weekend at work ill play more on a Sat).
This adds up to 60 hours of entertainment a month. Which is 25 cents/hour. Go to a movie and your talking about $10/hour.
And i know there are fun things to do that are free, but they are not as fun as MMO's IMO
Currently Playing: Fallen Earth Played and liked: TCOS, Vanguard, Guild Wars, DDO Played and didn't like: CO, MO, STO, DF, AoC, WAR, WoW, EQ2, EVE, most f2p Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, Secret World

Oh, for SURE if I wasn't with another gamer...things would be different! LOL Thankfully, we've known each other since high school and been together as a couple for 6 years, so we're pretty used to "our way" of doing things. =D And yes...I am indeed lucky.
Work from home on a MMO have a 2 year old and a 6 week old.
The answer to all my problems is no car Im lucky in that I am not allowed to drive, a medical condition I hasten to add not some ban for being a ass.
If i was a driver I would probably have 300-500 GBP a less per month which is a massive amount in the grander scheme of things heck my monthly house fees mortgage/bills/council tax etc is only 450 GBP so a car would be like owning and upkeeping 2 houses.
Again with the house its a 2 bedroom I possibly could use a slightly bigger place but we got this house before the UK market went boom so if I was to move i would be increasing my debt considerably even with the profit from this place.
Presently I will be mortgage free not long after my 40th birthday or I could move to a larger place and be in debt till 50+ it just doesnt make sense to me.
The kids have been a godsend in that I now never go out it disgusts me that i used to blow £50-100 getting drunk on a night out when you sit down and work out exactly what that would get you.
Eating out is a rarity, both myself and the Missus are keen cooks so rather than eat out we prefer to prepare little surprise dinners for each other whilst pushing our limits with a hobby we enjoy.
A lot is about mentality rather than income you can make a small budget stretch a long way or you can make a big budget vanish in a instant.
I'm not actually currently subbed to a MMO disinterested in the genre's mainstream offerings but at one point I did have 9 SWG subs.
I am in my mid twenties and single. I work as a nurse. I often work only night shifts and found that on my days off that I was up a lot of nights very bored so I started gaming. Now in the 4 years I have been working as a nurse I have paid back all my university loans, bought a house and a car. I also have 2 friends living with me in my house so that helps with bills. I am not rich and when I was living at home I was playing f2p games and ran into a nasty habit of buying way too much cash shop junk for me and others since I had a lot of disposible income. Well after 2 years and roughly 4k spent on virtual goods I gave my head a shake and said no more f2p games. So honestly the $15/month for each of the 2-3 games I play and the PS3 or PC game I pick up here and there don't even come close to what I was spending on gaming. But we all make priorities in life and if I were to have kids I would cut back the gaming simply to enjoy more time with them.
all jokes aside. I'm in the military and spending $15/month for a game is alot cheaper then blowing $100+/week in drinking. Atleast that what i tell my wife to keep the aggro at a minimum while I'm on the PC.
I live with my mom and little sis because my mom can't work due to her cancer and she just can't get by alone.
I pay half the rent, half utilities, car insurance, internet, cable, gas, food, my girlfriends cosmetology school, and ONE mmo...
I can only afford one MMO at a time, because despite the fact that I do work many hours per week, I don't get much per hour...A criminal record from a few years back prevents me from getting a better job, that is until it is cleared off of my record in about three years...
I choose to spend my extra money on an MMO because it keeps me in my home and out of trouble...
PLAYING: NOTHING!!! PLAYED:FFXI, LotRO, AoC, WAR, DDO, Megaten, Wurm, Rohan, Mabinogi, RoM

Now if only I could find a girl who doesn't like to go out and plays video games...*head explodes*
/salute
The job i have right now does not pay a whole lot. And because i dont have alot of free money to spend on entertainment i play MMO's as they are by far the cheapest type of entertainment.
I play about 3 hours of MMO's 5 times a week (on average - sometimes if im not OT on weekend at work ill play more on a Sat).
This adds up to 60 hours of entertainment a month. Which is 25 cents/hour. Go to a movie and your talking about $10/hour.
And i know there are fun things to do that are free, but they are not as fun as MMO's IMO
Currently Playing: Fallen Earth
Played and liked: TCOS, Vanguard, Guild Wars, DDO
Played and didn't like: CO, MO, STO, DF, AoC, WAR, WoW, EQ2, EVE, most f2p
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, Secret World
Between you and I....many, many differences.

Currently Playing: D3-ROS
Previously played: WoW, Tera, SWTOR, TSW, Rift, Defiance, GW2, Aion, LotRO, Rapplez, RoM, Dofus, LC, Requiem, WoKF, PW, etc
Waiting on: Wildstar
i work very very hard to pay for all the subs, but mostly i'm only paying for 1 game at a time.
But recently I bought star trek online.. but that was a waste of my money.. now trying out Global Agenda.. and it seems more fun.
OMFG. h4x0r
Because i dont like a big sig :P
Xfire Stats
I recycle aluminum cans and cardboard =p
all jokes aside. I'm in the military and spending $15/month for a game is alot cheaper then blowing $100+/week in drinking. Atleast that what i tell my wife to keep the aggro at a minimum while I'm on the PC.
I work 10 hours a day, 5-6 days a week...
