Apparantly theres a "charge" period with every melee attack that is a minimum of 0.5 sec (probably much longer for the starter weapons since they are generally lousy, and longer for more damaging weapons).
When you hold the left mouse button, you "raise" the axe (the charge), and when you drop it the axe "falls" (the attack). Since people are just clicking, the attack is performed as soon as it can, AFTER the charge. If they instead held down the button, and release it after the charge period, the attack comes instantly and people might actually hit something (not counting in lag in the equation of course. )
