I must be a magnet for d-bags, because I try to change up my gathering spots regularly and try not to be too far from a NPC city or a wilderness bank. Everytime I gather, without fail, I get rolled. Yesterday I logged in, went to the nearest node and began gathering ore and within 5 minutes was ganked for the pickaxe, 1 sulfur and 3 ore I'd managed to pull. When I started playing a couple months ago, I had no choice but to leave NEW because I'd have to stray too far from HD for ore spawns that weren't tapped dry and couldnt accomplish getting anything in the bank due to insta-wardecs that lurked. I've experienced the same in another clan. I even tried mixing among the other newbies in Monkfield and Sandbrook but so much as getting out of tower range got me the same result. I've even been ganked twice while fishing. From my (apperantly uncommon) experience, DF has no place for an aspiring crafter.
I left out ships simply because I haven't experienced that content in Darkfall yet. However, in MO building a house and extensions without having to loot a rare drop deed seems a bit more accessible. I'm not saying either game is bad or trying to convey that either game is better than the other. To do so would be an irresponsible opinion due to the fact that they're in entirely different development timelines. I just wanted to list pros and cons that I've encountered in each game and their design plans at this point in time and leave the decision open-ended. Noone knows if SV will deliver on Mortal anymore than we know what AV has in the works to improve and add to Darkfall. I just try to enjoy (and in some cases be frustrated by) what both have to offer.
Well the reason I make this point is that I actually see the game mechanics better in DF than what I have read about in MO and not just becuase of the ability to build boats.
For me one of the main attractions of DF is its attempt to bring RTS to RPG. Does it need some work? sure, but its very clear from the start that this is one of the main intentions of this game.
That and what I have read about MO crafting pretty much sounds just like enchanting light to be honest. Not to mention I would not give up the ability to craft a boat for being able to craft a different 'looking' weapon.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
If the other side refuse the war declaration, they still can get raped so whats the problem? I also heard that if you refuse a war declaration, you still get a penalty for that like losing gold. If you also dont have enough gold to refuse a declaration, you will be forced to go to war.
I've heard they haven't implemented any penalties for refusing war declaration yet, and it's still not certain that it will be in. Also war probably won't work in NPC cities.
Anyway - I don't see it as a "problem". It's a different design decision.
DF design is simple and straightforward: You can't defend the city - you don't deserve it. It's survival of the fittest.
You were not careful and someone stole your mount - too bad, go kill him to get it back.
You want justice - create one, it's a sandbox anyway. Aliance leaders, not Aventurine, create laws for the land.
MO is trying to be fair. Star Vault is trying to create many rules to protect the weak.
It's a noble idea, but sometimes it bites them in the ass ... Pushing someone is a crime - people block entrances, Pushing someone is not a crime - people push others away from the bank.
But in most cases it will work, just like it more or less worked in Ultima Online.

When I harvest I tend to either stay close to NPC City (if there are nodes nearby that are available) otherwise I have many nodes noted on my map which are far from NPC Cities. It's another tip in-case your NPC City is an hot spot. Sandbrook has some issues with War Dec clans on NEW but I was in NEW too around November and really didn't have any issue....I was the one emptying the nodes though :þ

That sucks you keep getting rolled. My own experience has been different, but I've been in mahirim and ork lands.
One of my favorite places to hang for now is Dragenoth in Ork lands. Plenty of mobs to skill up with (goblins, orks, skeletons, zombies, flying snakes). Plenty of harvesting nodes. Three towers. It's on an island not too far from land so every time I need to bank I skill up swimming while going to/from there. Crafting stations are very close to the bank. A short ride to other Ork cities with lots of other mobs. Not too far from my clan city.
When I harvest I always listen closely for sounds of mounts or footfall. The flying snakes shoot from quite a distance and usually take shots at people coming in from other areas, so if I hear them attacking something, I stop what I'm doing and scope it out.
I try to keep the towers within running distance of where I'm harvesting, and always check the area I'm in for escape routes before I start harvesting.
So far it's worked out great for me. I've only been rolled a few times in the last month, and have had several times where the towers have managed to kill my attackers which means free loot for me.
I'm sharing all this not to argue, but so you can try to find some place with similar attributes. Getting constantly rolled is frustrating for sure, but don't give up on crafting yet.

Also the melee combat in Darkfall is worse. People can call Mortal a CS knife fight all they want, but DF isn't even that far. DF is just click spamming, you can't effectively dodge or block, so it's all about clicking faster than the other guy and hoping you have more HP.
This is not at all accurate, you can effectively block and dodge in Darkfall. MO's combat system is like DF's but in FPV, and slowed down a lot, and with a lot more lag.
MO is more like a technology demo for the Unreal engine than a MMO right now, it will be a year easy before it becomes "good". The big question is whether SV has the money (or can milk followers for more money) to be able to finish the game to something close to release content/quality.
Hello both games appeal to me so im on the fence which one i should try first any suggestions
If you want to play Mortal Online you will need to upgrade your computer. Even then, anything over 100 players in one area is going to be a lag fest.
DF is out now and ready to go. DF wont run on a DX386 but any PC built in the past year or two will run it and run it well.
I didn't see any specs posted, so its hard to guess. Both games seem to run about the same on my computer. For what its worth, MO will seem like it performs slower in certain areas because SV still needs to do some optimization. The spots that I experience lag are always the same, as though it is trying to push the upcoming graphics/textures for a given area all at once instead of on the fly. Similar to crossing a tile seam on the DF minimap I guess its as though MO pushes all of the info through right when you cross that gridline/seam. I'm not claiming that there is any lag in Darkfall when crossing a map gridline, but trying to equate MO's lag spots in more familiar situations to those familiar with Darkfall.
As for Zaeluce's question, what I chose to do was play Darkfall first since their 6 month offer was hard to refuse, and after a couple months I'd saved enough in not paying monthly fees to put on the MO beta digital download so I could try both of them side-by-side. You can find plenty of opinions that will try to sway you one direction or another, or you can see what each game has to offer firsthand.
Go play MO. You'll see how fast you RUN back to Darkfall. The game is basically unplayable, there's no content, the AI is 'turned off' and there are a total of about 12 mobs in the game. Oh yea, magic is unfinished, most of the skills are bugged, and combat sucks worse than a CS knife fight.
But don't take my word for it. Check it out. Now's the opportunity to agree with me
I don't know. Darkfall will be more fun for a bit while MO works out some kinks, but I think that MO may have more potential if it ever gets off the ground. DF is definitely fun, but when it comes down to it all you have is a single melee swing, a block, a rocket launcher with different speeds and AOE explosions, and a bow. The rest is skill and stat grind. Don't get me wrong DF is loads of fun, but I don't see anything ever changing these basics as they constantly focus on creating PvP hotspots, and 90% of all expansions are dumped into chaos chests with a ridiculously rare chance of ever seeing one of these items. Things like a simple safe for your house that you might have spent 50k-150k for can go for more than your house because they make them so ridiculously rare. What I am saying is unless you really get into guild politics DF can get old after a few months with nothing to really make it fresh again. This isn't a content driven game it is a system driven game and in general they aren't really focusing on making their systems any deeper. If they start opening up some of the dungeons and polishing up some group PvE content which would in turn create PvP hotspots like they are constantly trying to do, or add some depth to their current systems it could be the sandbox that lives on and grows strong like EVE, but they aren't and show no intention to. MO devs I think have a much broader focus with deeper systems in mind, but it as at least 6-12 months from being stable and interesting enough to really compete. I think DF has worked itself into a pigeon hole while MO has made itself too broad for now, but if it lives and is successful enough to grow this is a great thing. DF is pretty solid now, but at launch it had almost none of it's promised features. If they said they had it they made sure to have a small bug that made it impossible to do. Such as inability or nearly impossible cost to create ships. Extremely rare armor that was worse than some of the most common, etc. DF was a mangled heap of what it is now at launch so these games provide potential to a starved market. The market is less starved for MO though than it was for DF.
Great post, you gave me alot of food for thought here. Frankly myself and a few friends in DFO are already kicking around the idea of playing MO as well and letting our subs to DFO lapse. Dont get me wrong im having alot of fun in DFO but some the points you touch on are already obivious to us and we are new players, only 2 weeks in.
^^This is pretty much the argument right now. If you have the patience to wait for Mortal Online to mature for a few months, then you may as well play it as its core systems seem more inclined to longer play and a larger base audience. While Darkfallers insist their game is (and has been) doing better in population each week since launch, AV refuses to release any information to support this statement. IMO giving out sub number (if they are higher than most expect) could only be good publicity in my eyes. IMO, purchasing DF is like buying a ship with a leak. Its slowly sinking yet the merry band is playing on like their is nothing to worry about. They ask for your subscription money for a few more months until better things are there. If thats your thing, fine, I just prefer looking at things in a bit longer investment.
LOL.... step away from the crack pipe!
By fall of THIS year SV will be filing for bankruptcy protection. MO is a steaming pile of dung, face it, accept it, move on.
Funny, I could have sworn this is what people were saying about DFO and AV as well...see how that works?

Man I was in DF at that day one. And you know the game wasn't in worse conditions than say World of Warcraft in 2004. Yeah, there were some bugs. And yeah server crashed ocasionally (pretty rarely I'd say). Exploites existed as well. But I assure you WoW had the same problems and even worse. The only thing that actually pissed people off a lot was that they couldn't buy the game...

That would be before they actually could play it... but I guess that also applies to MO since it's basically in an unplayable state.
You MO'rs fail to understand that in MO's case the makers (I say that bc modders are not devs... patcher anyone?) ambitions far, far exceed they're abilities. I can say that my new vacuum cleaner will not only clean the carpets, but will infact take out the trash, and mow the lawn. Point is, most people would know it can't.
Paper can hold still and let you write whatever you want on it, but that doesn't make it so, or true.
I still stand by my ominous prediction that SV will be seeking bankruptcy protection by the fall.
MO is terrible for many many reasons. The only good things mo has going for it is crafting and how customizable houses are. It has nothing going for it currently because all the things that could be epic aren't due to how they insist on having a territory control system with stats loss (assuming stat loss goes in) and red spawn points.
I'm sorry, but any game that would have you pay full price to help salvage their game should just get it over with and pull the plug. I'm not saying DFO is better by any stretch of the imagination... but DFO managed to get released. I'm very skeptical if MO can accomplish that. From what I heard you can only pvp and ride your horse in a barren landscape... They already have this game it's called Fallen Earth.
I agree. I am playing MO beta and I can't see why I would quit DFO for this. I would much rather invest my time in Darkfall despite its numerous flaws.
I believe Mortal is just going through what Darkfall did. It's just now in open beta, they are having a lot of difficulties with their patchers, and although I haven't been able to log into it today to fully clarify, since open beta launched the lag has made the game simply unplayable right now. Given a years time I'm sure it will be a remarkable game just as Darkfall has. But, given that Darkfall has that year on Mortal, it is in my opinion the more worthy choice. It has had its game more polished and more content added to it, since its unremarkable launch, and would therefore(also in my opinion) be more worthy of someones money at the moment. I wanted to give SV my money out of devotion to the same ideal as they, but in its current state, it's simply unplayable, and I don't want to currently pay for it, in its present state. Perhaps in around 3 months time from release it will be at least in a playable form that pleases me enough to help them with their funding problem in the little way that I can, but till then, I'd say Darkfall is the more solid choice between the two at the moment. Keep doing your research on both games though. Add their websites to your favorites, stay on tabs with the update notes, and such, if you read something you'd like to try out, or find out something interesting, go ahead and sub.
Darkfall doesn't offer a free trial at the moment, so you will have to purchase the game in its entirity to play it. Mortal Online is currently in open beta, so this is about as close as you're going to get to a free trial. Visit their forums and download their latest patcher. It is a more complete patcher than their previous one, it adds the shortcut, installs all of the system updates your computer will need to run the game properly, and goes through the more traditional and convenient setup process most games are accustomed to today that will make getting it easier than it used to be. I would however still recommend purchasing Darkfall. At the moment Mortal doesn't seem to be offering as many features as Darkfall is, and is still way to early in its devolopment phase to compare to the condition Darkfall is in. It's still polishing out content, removing bugs etc. where as, as I've said already, Darkfall is not in the dire need to do so(it will continue to polish and remove bugs, all games continue to have bugs). I hope you have sufficient information, but like I suggested, read up on both games. Youtube videos provide a decent amount of information, but some people are known to stage their video's, so use your own common sense of judgement when deciding if that was a valid video or not. A lot of them have very vocal commenters that will probably tell you if the video is crap or not. Good luck in your search!
I was there during DFO Beta and now MO Beta (Closed Beta) and MO seems a much better game, IMO.
The Open Beta ruined the experience (temporarily we hope?) with the Lag but once that is resolved and things return to how they were pre-OB, you might be impressed (if you don't expect to much, ofc)
MO has better core foundations and systems in place than DF and it's vision is more suited to my preferences. I want a game that allows for all styles of play and to do many things. MO promises this (and is delivering pretty much on it all as long as one appreciates how this is very early stages of development). Darkfall is pretty much a PVP-centric game.
BTW, those with longer memories try to remember how games such as Eve, vanguard & yes, even WoW were at launch on first release. They had many, many bugs and lacked content. We can often forget this when we see a new game and then compare it to a big multi-blockbuster with millions of subs and years of active development.
MO is great considering how they are independent and early stage. I enjoy it and hope for many more years to come.
Without question, MO the game is going far and has everything for the hardcore pvp player to enjoy. minus hacks, bunny-hoppoing and mass macros. put the money there bro.
Originally posted by kcc9889 I agree. I am playing MO beta and I can't see why I would quit DFO for this. I would much rather invest my time in Darkfall despite its numerous flaws.
That is really not fair, DFO have become a lot better in the last year since release so you should compare MO with how DFO was a few weeks before release not today.
Which game that really will be the best is not something we know right now, both games will be improved a lot in the future and it also depends a lot on personal taste. And the competition will force both games to improve themselves more than if the other game didn't exist which will be good for the players of both games.
However for the OP I would still recommend to try the MO open beta while it is still up. DFO doesn't have a free trial yet anyways so he can at least try one of the games while he can without paying for it, then try DFO after the open beta is over.
A "best" game is always a very personal experience and very hard to rate, and MMOs are a lot more about that than any other type of game.
Well, I really hate to hear these comparisons because they forget one very important element to the equation: Darkfall will not be the same game in 6 months either. Comparing MO in SIX MONTHS to Darkfall TODAY is completely unrealistic. Darkfall will evolve also and it could very well stay ahead of MO in playability every step of the way.
IMHO, wait and evaluate both when MO gets to a playable state.

I've tried MO open beta. It's not like free trial at all - it's more like client compatibility test or server stress test.
If StarVault wants to convince us that MO is a fun game worth 15$ subscription - they should give us real free trial after release.
Darkfall ! ! ! I'm not just saying that because I play it. Darkfall is complete and polished. MO is a work in progress that could one day be at Darkfalls level. I will probably play MO in 6-12 months if it outlives it's release state. I hope it does because it has the potential to be a good one.

LOL.... step away from the crack pipe!

Now look at MO and compare...

Personally,
I was there during DFO Beta and now MO Beta (Closed Beta) and MO seems a much better game, IMO.
The combat is crap
The territory control system is crap
The war dec system is crap
Basically anything that has anything to do with meaningful PvP is crap. yea it allows all play styles to fluorish

MO will be 10 times harder then darkfall... and that's a fact based only on current unpolished unfinished game.
Want a hardcore game ? Go for MO!
