I am surprised at the number not planning to buy the game - unless all those that are going to already had. I know these boards are always full of "haters" but I'm struggling to find a good review here
Well when they pass an average single player game for an MMO what do you expect?
People are not stupid.
Unfortunately there will be thousands of people who do not follow MMORPGs forums and will buy the game because it is Star Trek.
That's what Cryptic is counting on, making a sub par game hoping that the IP will sell the game.............................and that's why they will be hated for years to come.
I got burned by CO. Got an STO closed beta invite and didn't bother. From the reviews I've read and the information I've gathered it doesn't sound like fun to me. I had high expectations for STO when I first heard about it, long before Cryptic got a hold of it.
I've read it's a lot like CO, but with a Star Trek "skin". No idea if this is correct or not.
Current: None Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
If I wanted an online game right now, whch I don't with ME2, Bioshock 2, DA: O and a few other things around, I would go for Global Agenda or Legaue of Legends...Not this cash grab.
There is a difference between proft and profiteering, and Cryptic fall way too far on the wrong side for me. I have no idea what happened to that company i once really enjoyed and rooted for
I have tried several MMOs since playing SWG and no new ones have anything near the depth of that game. Especially for crafting. STO, and the new KOTOR, are basic games that have been given a half arse skin. STO looks like a WOW with Sci FI stuff, at best. Plays like a FPS console game. KOTOR looks like a 3p arcade game that has been given a fail SW skin. MMOs are for long term play, period. Many companies are trying to treat it like a console game thinking that lasting a year is OK. If this is the future of MMOs, then I'll go back to PnP for some real fun. Right now SWG as a game is my idea of a full fledged MMO. Something that has as much combat as crafting, player driven economy, large free roaming worlds, Player Housing, and PVP. It is painfully obvious that companies cannot handle this type of effort anymore and are all about penetrating the console market and thrid party markets. MMOs are starting to feel like console games and be marketed like them cause they just want to capture as much short term market share as they can. THIS IS NOT THE WOW MODEL SO DONT EXPECT TO BE ONE YOU RETARDED BUSINESS EXECUTIVES! Anyway, after all the BS with SWG, I will continue to be very particular about what I consider a real MMO vs. a single player game with a MMO facade. My time and my money are too valuable to believe that anything any game developer says prior to or right after a launch is true or sincere. Wait a year and then you might know some of the truth.
I pretty much agree, and yeah, I have already re started PnP gaming again, playing Pathfinder campaign right now and having a blast.
The only MMO I am looking forward to now is FF14 simply because SE seem to be invested in the long haul and creation of community over a short term cash grab. Not saying it's 'better' then anything else, thats just opinion, but it looks like a real MMORPG.

However, if there wasn't a monthly sub I might reconsider that option. I see nothing that calls for a monthly fee with the cash shop they're implementing and the gameplay/content the game has currently. Frankly, after seeing how CO was handled I have little faith that much is going to be done differently with this game either.
If they used Guild Wars model for this game I very well may have purchased it, but it's not a game worth a monthly fee far as I'm concerned considering the game and the company managing it.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I didn't like the direction they took the last time I saw the plan for the game. I liked the whole ship's crew concept it started with but that whole captain your own ship wasn't to my liking. And from all the things I've heard I'd have to say no and save my money.
Already did. Two, actually. A CE for me and a regular copy for my roommate. Both played in beta and been playing it ever since. I love how people can call an MMO crap after its been out for... 40-some hours. But of course, Im sure thats plenty of time. Cough.

I love how people can call an MMO "awesome" after it's been out for .. 40-some hours.. But of course, I'm sure that's plenty of time.. Cough..

I know right? I think it takes a bit longer than two days to judge a game. Its a good thing I didn't say it was awesome, 'cause if you reread, I gave no opinion whatsoever. But you're totally right.
I'll give it a few good weeks before I pass judgement. I'll let you know when I decide whether to subscribe after the free month or not. That's just how MMOs work, especially during launch week.
After reading through all the discussions in regard to Star Trek Online, I have decided that at this point in time, I would not buy it. I don't mind free to play games. I don't mind pay to play games either, but if it's a combination of both, I know enough to stay clear of it.
Maybe if I get really desperate for something different I might check it out in a few months, but the idea of running around with a bunch of fake people for a crew really puts me off.
Played OB and found it too repetitive and very simplistic, like WoW in space. Cryptic did not do the Star Trek IP justice nor will they be getting my money for this so called "Star Trek mmorpg".

I bought the game. I am a very casual gamer these days, and find the game enjoyable. I just hope they get these bugs ironed out.

No.
Nah. As far as I'm concerned I've been there done that.
1 day of beta was enough for me.
I rather buy the ST Movie or watch some old TV shows. You can't go wrong.
No.

no. after co, i'll wait for the free trial. eta 4-6 months.

But, if they have a trial, I might reconsider.
Main characters:
Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)
Ill give you the main reasons why I got turned off on this game.
(1) Highly Instanced as it way to many
(2) Ground combat not fun
(3) Space combat remind me of pirates of the burning sea
(4) Half the lore already referes to the abrams universe, there was a voice over about romulus being destroyed and nero.
(5) Money grab, 50 buck for game 15 bucks a month and more money to unlock character slots
(6) It does not feal like star trek at all
So that is why I voted no.
Maybe if I get really desperate for something different I might check it out in a few months, but the idea of running around with a bunch of fake people for a crew really puts me off.
After getting burned by CO and trying the beta of this...I would say, "Hell No!"
Already bought it went straight to the shop to buy the klingon and ferengi.
