hmm, well At least Aion had two.. COMPLETE races to play at launch.
Aion had already been out for 12 months in Korea, so it was polished and working... ok, so its grindy at least its polished and working.
The problem is ST:O is being release half not working, nothing really wrong with the game or the concept, it is actually good fun.. but that good fun ends, and it ends rapidly. And I hardly think Eve players have anything to do with its rating. Eve only has 300k subs, tiny compared to most AAA MMO's
Are you sure you know what you are talking about?
300k subs is basically par for Western AAA MMOs. You have few exceptions.
That and EVE Online's sub trend graph is backwards of most MMOs. Most MMOs see thier peak sub count within the first 6 months and then lose players over time. EVE has been gaining players over time.
There are resources out there that give you estimates and 300k is fairly close to your AAA MMO par.
I think the difference in rating has more to do with people not having their expectations met for a Star Trek MMO more than it does the lack of quality in STO vs. Aion. Lets be honest, while Aion was a highly anticipated MMO it did not have the same type of expectations that go with the Star Trek franchise. In order for STO to have matched what people were hoping for Cryptic would have needed to develop a truely epic MMO. Nobody can argue this, Cryptic did not develop an epic Star Trek mmo and people are disappointed with their effort. The ratings reflect that as they should.
Aion, for better or worse, is pretty much the game people expected NCSoft to deliver, which is reflected in its ratings. There wasn't any huge missing content at launch (except maybe at endgame) and most everything promised has been delivered w/o any sort of cash shop. (sure wish I could buy some exp boosting pots) STO is being penalized in the ratings for what it failed to deliver, either from peoples expectations of what a ST MMO should have been coupled with the real failure of Cryptic to deliver a fully featured game with all the promised features (at launch). Throw in a cash shop which many abhor and you have the ratings you see today. While there might not be that many people who love Aion, there are far more people who hate STO and Cryptic and will take the time to vote.
I agree with the idea that many negative reviews come from people who expected something different. I didn't have any preconceptions and figured it was difficult enough just to translate what is basically a "space soap-opera" into an MMORPG that would sell to begin with, let alone getting too innovative about it.
I really wonder if it didn't have the Star Trek name and was just a new space MMORPG if it would be more critically acclaimed. I think it would be. I think it's quite possible the huge IP has a negative effect on how some perceive the game.
I think because it IS such a huge IP, it's going to get more subscriptions than it would if it wasn't Star Trek. The Star Trek IP helps this game immensely. If it didn't have that IP, I don't think people would give this game another thought....
Originally posted by wolfing STO has a low score and it deserves it. I'm a Trekkie like most other trekkies (not the super hardcore ones that know every specification of every ship). I've been playing STO since closed beta, and to tell you the truth, it was a much better game in closed beta. My main problem with STO, it's way too easy. It was much more fun in closed beta, but when open beta came in and WoW kids started complaining it was difficult, Cryptic made player ships almost unkillable. You honestly can finish all battles by level 14 (my current level) in autoattack, just sit back and watch the show. No challenge = no fun. Now, I haven't played Aion so can't tell you if it's easier or not, but STO as it is right now, it's not a game I would recommend. If they eventually raise the difficulty and/or add a difficulty selector like in City of Heroes, my opinion might change, but right now, combat in STO is a snorefest (if you don't PvP)
I kind of agree with the difficulty scale being too easy.
The game was hard, then too easy but they got it somwhat right at the end of open beta.
At some point, I wanted some challenge so I went roaming into Cardassian space. The NPCs were about 6 levels higher. It was really a challenge to take on them and it was fun to kite them and such but overall it was frustrating experience.
The fights were pretty long, my targets were limited, I couldn't use dropped loot and it didn't get me anywhere.
Truth to say, this is not easy to balance and a lot is in players hands. Having a super tank with minimal DPS can allow you to 'play stupid' but that's your choice
Aion has been out longer and has total of over 550 rating votes.. STO is still very new and doesn't even have a total of 100 rating votes yet.. thats why the ratings are so different i'm sure STO will get a user rating around 8.12 soon ..

I don't think it would be acclaimed, I think it would be ignored. On the other hand, think of all the development they could have done with the money they would have saved on acquiring rights to the IP, and wooden Zachary Quinto voice acting.
The rating now reflects the basic MMO haters along with the Star Trek fans who wanted a totally different game in my opinion. Wait a month or two for those who haven't any preconceived agendas to weigh in. I'm betting this game brings in many first time MMO players who aren't jaded by the past ones to the point that some on these boards have become. The game does well enough on what it promised and fails totally on what many on these boards wanted, unfortunately cryptic couldn't do a better melding of the opposing views. I do believe they will have plenty of time to bridge some of those gaps, but time will tell.
Well this is my opinion and it is highly subjective but here goes anyways... I played Lineage II for over 3 years and WoW for about a year so when I tried Aion my reaction was 'meh' as I felt I had already played it to death at that point. It is just a combination of L2 and WoW in my opinion with a pretty new paint job. I uninstalled the game before the end of that week. As for STO I find it to be something new and very fun to play... again my opinion and highly subjective.
As for the ratings on this site I take them with a very large grain of salt. After all Atlantica Online has been at the top spot for months now... you know something is seriously wrong there.

Hope you are joking, this games score is worthy of its current state IMO. It will never see a rating above 8 since it will lose 2/3 of its playerbase after 1 month when people decide its not worth a monthly sub.

you can't compare Atlantica and STO.
Atlantica = f2p.
STO = p2p
Wasn't even trying to. I was just using it as an example as to how accurate the ratings are on this site. I seriously doubt Atlantica is played by many of the regular users of this site given the amount of F2P and Item Mall hating that goes on around here. Yet it has been voted the #1 game for at least the last 3 months. Like I said you shouldn't take the ratings on this site very seriously.
I have to agree with the OP, on the STO positives at least, I never played Aion. Space combat is new and different for me, the bridge officer concept is also new and different for me, ground combat is not terrible imo, about the same as many MMO's. I don't get the blanket statements of "they didn't even try" that some keep repeating; for me the game plays like an episode of the TV show, they did try, and they succeeded imo.
I also agree with the Op, I have played Aion till 50 with a elyos ranger , the game was fun, but the grind does get to you, and if people say that higher levels in STO is a grind, they are mistaken bigtime.
I personaly believe STO to be a fantastic game and the experience gets better and better! To the Op, the reason why Aion got a higher score on "this" website, is because it's Fantasy , not sci fi fantasty. To be honest, this site is the worst for trolls and flamers I have ever seen.
I've grown to like STO. The more I play, the better I find the experience. I had the opposite experience with Aion. In 3 days of playing my current character in STO: I've fought in maybe 30 PVP battles, and at least half of them were really well contested and fun (more than I can say for PVP Arena type games in other games) I've done countless missions, all of them different in some way, I'm playing a game with 2 distinct modes of gameplay so it doesn't get too repetative I've been on missions that have had 7 parts, each with an actual story behind it (instead of- Porguses are overrunning a farm, clear them out) the bridge officer system is a totally new and innovative way to increase and improve powers and it's cool to fight with a group on solo missions The graphics are great- each planet is distinctly different and space looks fantastic and runs great on my mid-line comp Space fighting is totally new for an mmorpg and actually requires a certain amount of paying attention rather than the usual "use three special abilities and then use them again in the same order". You have to worry about positioning, speed, your shields, when to fire torpedoes, and when is the best time to use your abilities (such as trying to tractor beam a klingon ship when it's back is turned to you). Abilities are varied and almost all of them are useful. Fleet missions (open group PVE quests) are abundant and fun It's Star Trek! Tons of cool and often funny references to the show. I just did a mission yesterday where I went back in time and the game explained why Klingons just looked like people with goatees in the original series instead of ridge-headed aliens. Very funny story on a quest based on an old episode of Star Trek the original series. In 3 days of playing my old character in Aion: I did nothing but grind on mobs in the same old way, by myself, with no incentive to group and absolutely no meaningful or fun PVP, in the same washed-out similar zones with no inteligible or in any way immersive story, simply recycling the same abilities over and over in the same way on the same kind of mobs. ___
So, I'm going to have to vehemently disagree with the scores this game has gotten on this site. Based on what I've read, I'm guessing the negatives are mostly from Eve online players who wanted the game to be Eve or from Star Trek fans who wanted the game to be like the game in their head. Face it, no other company has been able to actually produce a Star Trek MMORPG, and this one is not only totally playable, it's really fun.
I can't speak for Aion, as I never played it. Eve I never cared for at all. I have tried STO (closed and open beta) and the game needed far more development time, especially concerning content. The graphics for space are very nice, as are the ships. I don't even have a problem with the 'fantastical' look of the characters. What I do have a problem with is the boring and repetitive content in the game. Sure it's fun the first time you start up, mainly due to the ship combat which is a watered down version of the Starfleet Command series, however the game has little replay value.
It needed about another year of focus on the content to get the missions away from the copy and past go here and scan/kill five X that most missions focus on. Yes most MMOs get these repetitive types of quests, but generally other MMOs break them up somehow. In STO you have a couple storylines (Fed only), but most of the missions are clearly copy and paste jobs. Even the 'exploration' missions generally end up the same way as well; scan/kill X amount of Y. The sad thing is the new version of the Celes system/Starbase 114 mission (Accidents Happen?) shows how good the game could be when they take time to work on a quest instead of just having their engine pump out generic missions.
So I gave it high marks for graphics, but low marks for most of the other categories; while I can see the potential in the game and the IP, Cryptic has not tapped into that potential. Most people defending the game talk about how great it's going to be in six months or a year, and some are even talking about two years down the road; however, we were not asked to rate the game on how it could be, but how it is now. If you're having a blast right now, then great! Talk to me after the thirty day free tiral ends; I would be curious to see if you still feel the same way.

That's possible. It already went up .6 points since I made this post earlier today.

Just a general comment on some of the things I've been reading-
Many people keep saying STO has stale repetative gameplay. I wonder what they are comparing it to because I'm comparing it to other MMORPGs, and in every MMORPG there are some repetative elements. I can't shake the feeling that because this is Star Trek, people expected something truly unique, like the show was. I never came into it expecting that. I mean, I played LOTRO and it's basically the same kind of thing any MMORPG is, but that didn't stop me from playing and enjoying the game for months because it had it's own unique elements and a solid core, just like I feel this game does.
The Lord of the Rings storyline is truly unique, and it, like Star Trek, doesn't really lend itself well to an MMORPG setting. For one thing, there's not much fighting in it besides the epic battles. And yet they did adapt it, basically by putting a Lord of the Rings flavor on a standard MMORPG and adding unique elements that fit the theme like the epic storyline. I think Cryptic did the same thing here, with unique elements like splitting up the gameplay between ground and ship, which fits the show.
The reason I think comparing it to Aion is useful, besides the fact that I think Aion is terrible, is that often the chief complaint about STO is the supposed stale and repetative gameplay, and yet Aion scores higher with what (and I don't think many will argue with this) the most repetative gameplay of any MMORPG to date.
Something's just not right, and it's clear to me that the games are not being judged by the same standards.
When you guys say stale and repetative gameplay, do you mean compared to other MMORPGs, or do you mean compared to the game in your head you thought STO should've been?
Space fighting is totally new for an mmorpg and actually requires a certain amount of paying attention rather than the usual "use three special abilities and then use them again in the same order".
Jut for the record it was SWG with JTL expansion, and it needed some skills even if less than in X-Wing series.

ST isn't about killing things, but what Cryptic delivered was a ST themed spaceship combat game. Good for those who enjoy it, not so much for those hoping for a bit more.
