Let's admit that we all have a very short list of good mmo's.
Let's admit that we all see a very short list of good up coming new releases.
MY OPINION is that developers are trying to get ahead of technology with good graphics, and game play suffers. Most players are asking for the latest in graphics and realism. MY OPINION is that you can't have both, too many variables come with good Graphics such as:
Devs competence
Devs focus on Graphics, not game play
Instancing zones to compensate
Walls and paths
Band-with
Is my computer capable
Is your computer capable ( were talking about mmo's here, we have to play with each other )
Cost
In my OPINION, this all takes away from a good immerse game play. Bring back the EQ 1 style graphics and give me a good modern deep mmo ( I'm exaggerating some what, but you get my point ).
This is only my view, what do you think ?

Lies! I can have both!
Plenty of games with excellent graphics and gameplay (for their time). The original EQ pushed system specs quite a bit and had very good graphics for it's time; however look at console games which often have very good graphics and gameplay.
Lies ?
I guess you did not see MY OPINION, about 5 times in the OP !
Graphics can only make a good game better.
It's the gameplay that makes the game good to begin with.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
yep op i agre with you !game maker are using very advanced graphic feature without dx11,microsoft donnybrook,64 bit
the problem is this: the graphic of today are meant to be used with ALL of today techno
and all the time the company say :oh its no big deal lets cut corner lets skip dx11,lets skip donnybrook, and lets stay 32 bit
and then BOOM!crash !then the dev are like what the fuck
if you are using 32 bit techno wich was dev in dx9 then, use nothing higher then dx9 or = technology
same for graphic you dont add new graphic techno on those you got to use the graphic techno that was avail
in say 2004.
annoying yes but its crash free.can you say the same about your game of today
i dont add ati 5770 on my 486 ibm computer ,neither should you as game dev if you want smooth game!
I voted for both, but I'd take game play over graphics if I really had to choose one or the other.
In my mind one is nothing without the other. I want some bling aswell as a solid gameplay experience. I would say 60-40 in favor of gameplay though.
All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.
if you want the same go HD.
1680x1050 at 60 htz my actual screen
1920x1050 at 24 htz HD I i would get better graphic and better performance with an hd screen
we didnt have HD screen on computer not too long ago so it wasnt a choice
so my system get 40 fps
with an HD screen i would get 50 fps and better picture
yep!its the sad truth.and since most HD tv now post process picture to rise the htz to 120(copy picture 5 time per second, yes its processed by tv)this means no flikering)
My first response looking at the topic was gameplay. When I saw I could take both, I still took gameplay.
Why..? Easy... Gameplay is (to me) more important than graphics. A game might look fabulous *points at AoC at release* but when it lacks any content or good interface to enjoy the combats in the game, you still have nothing and (at least I) will skip the game.
If I can get both in a game *points at TERA and FFXIV* I'm happy, but graphics is (to me) of a lot lower priority than gameplay.
...hence I'm playing FFXI and EVE right now....
Both no jewels whenit comes to graphics but their gameplay is superb!
I prefer Gameplay
Clearly, both are desired. But there's no excuse for lack of a *game*. Dealing with subpar graphics as long as the gameplay is entertaining is ok. Having great graphics but no substance behind them...
That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc.
We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be.
So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away.

In a perfect world I'd like to see both but if I was pressed to choose one over the other I would pick Game play hands down every time. Graphics are nice but once you get over the initial awe of a pretty game if the game play isn't there it gets old fast. I've deleted some very pretty games off of my hard drive with less than a weeks play time invested but I still have some on there from 10-15 years ago... Why? GAME PLAY!!!

Depends totally on the game for me.
When I play a strategy game like Civ or Stars! then I can have lots of fun no matter how bad the graphics are. Sure, with great graphics it would be better, but in the end in such games they hide some charts.
Like this game is one of the best multiplayer strategy games I played.
However in MMORPGs it's different. I look at my char so often, that I want that char too look good. If the game doesn't allow me to create a char whichs looks and animations I enjoy then I won't have that much fun playing the game. Same with the landscapes. If the landscapes are ugly enough, then I don't get the feeling of beeing inside a world.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
"graphics" is too nebulous a term. A game could still have a polished look and consistent artwork without the high barrier to entry. Some examples would be WoW, The Sims, Pokemon, and Tetris. If those games had poor graphics (mind you, good graphics does not necessarily mean cutting edge graphics) each of those games would have suffered despite the solid gameplay.
If your poll refers to cutting edge graphics and the latest tech, then I would say Gameplay is far more important. If it refers to consistent or polished graphics, then I'd say it's almost on par with gameplay.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein
"Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
People always say that they'd take gameplay over graphics, and yet when they're confronted with a game considered widely to be one of the best one of all time ( Dwarf Fortress ) they recoil in horror at it's ASCII. Even when tiles are installed, most people are terrified of the graphics.
There seems to be a limit most people are willing to drop to in terms of graphics, even if the gameplay is amazing. I really doubt I have one, but the average gamer seems to be a graphics whore who wants Crysis level graphics even when it's not thematically or economically appropriate.
I'd suggest that Asheron's Call 2's graphics are pretty much the best you could hope for with a team that focuses entirely on gameplay, nowadays, anything more is pushing it too far. ( Screenshots: 1, 2, 3, 4 ) A small amount of work on floor textures and animations would considerably improve it, but that's all that's really needed in my opinion. That may just be because I really like the graphical style.
yep if we quantify graphic quality i got to say UO is too low quality for me taste even with great gameplay
but everquest quality with great gameplay i can live perfectly fine with this!
Graphics need to be "good enough". For me, that means:
Once the graphics are good enough, game play is all that matters. I think that's true for most players, or MMO players at least. Of course, "good enough" varies from person to person, so heated discussions on graphics are inevitable anyway.
If you look what we can do today with graphics then I say both.
NOT LIKE FALLEN EARTH! Boooo! Ctrl+c on every building and crap graphics and ewww the animations are....
Both. This "only gameplay counts" is wow blabla.
i agre it can be done dx11 is there,donnybrook,64 bit .but without those it means reverting to dx9 quality of graphic since the three techno i mention are needed to get max graphic quality
but these techno are so new not many know how to include them in game or even want to!
Both are equally as important.
I wouldn't say this about the majority of games, but for MMO's I feel that graphics matter more than usually.
When you have a game that won't be played through by majority of players 6~ months from the release, but new players are actually joining in years after release, and old gamers might play the game much longer than the typical 10~100hours, graphics actually mean something. The game should look good years after the release, too. That doesn't that the graphics must be ultra high and top notch, but they should be made to age well. They also can't be too "bad" looking from the start, because imagine the game 5 years from now if the graphics are already quite dull. It won't do the game justice.
Of course gameplay makes the product a "game", but in this case I think that graphics (if not technically, from the art-point of view) are almost just as important.
I have $4000 to spend.
Should I get that new textured siding for the house, or a spear bathroom for the kids ?
the bathroom with spears for the kids! they can either wash bhind their ears or be impailed!
Well, it would be nice to have a combination of both, but if I had to sacrifice something, I would chose to sacrifice graphics for gameplay, because I feel that gameplay is much more important. It is gameplay that would be keeping me entertained, and gameplay that would get me to subscribe to a game. As for graphics, as long as it's does not urk me, I'm perfectly fine with anything; both anime-style and realistic-style.
And anyway, I still count Runescape as one of my favourite games, even though the graphics are well... heh. But the amount of stuff you can do in that game is amazing though, especially if you're a member.
Main characters:
Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)
I do not feel I should have to choose between the two. I want great graphics and great gameplay. If you cant offer me both, my wallet will find a game that can.
I was coming to add the exact same thing. There should not need to be a choice.
