I think the HATE is about to begin. The official forums are already popcorn and beer paradise as we speak. Next to the server crashes, they now completely messed up pre-orders and their bonusses. People are all getting the wrong bonusses atm. It keeps getting better and better.
LOL what are you talkin about???? Been plalyin since it started one crash returened within an hour, all clan preorders with no problem, may want to try the game before you talk about things. ..kids...go figure
"The purpose of critcal posts is to warn prospective buyers of the game what they will be spending their money on. Is that not a useful service to provide?
No one is keeping you from posting about the things in the game that you like."
Agreed. Personally I have really appreciated the critical posts on this game. I've been on the fence about trying it out but now I'm pretty sure it would be a big disappointment and is nothing at all like what I expected. So glad now I didn't preorder and that I won't waste my money trying it out. Granted it's not necessary to wish ill fortune on those who developed it but I can understand someone who paid a lifetime sub or even just a preorder being really bitter about something that didn't measure up to the hype and as long as you have an open forum where people are free to express their criticisms I think that kind of thing is inevitable. Part of the price you pay for free speech.

Do you have links showing this? It's always good to provide links to back up things like this so people can be sure about problems when they are considering buying a game.
For me, I've tried enough of the game to know that I don't find much of anything fun in it at all.
If people wanna complain about a game, let them. That's part of having a forum. Personally I couldn't even play STO because I'm still running off of my old Pentium D 2.8 and my Radeon 2600 512MB card. Kept lagging. That and with only 2GB of RAM. *Sighs* Time to retire this old beast. Or at least it USED to be a beast.

same here though i use a 1.2 ghz cpu and a nvidia 7900 gtx with 1 gig vram
i can say from experince that ati cards are really more for ppl who like to oc thier video card i always go with nvidia 4 years later its still a beast albeit a tamed one but still one nonetheless
i might add that i run most games flawlessly with exceptions of course and the requirements for sto seem no far off then cox or guild wars hell lotro

I assume he's refering to the fact that you didn't get your pre-order bonuses until you registered your retail key, and retail keys wheren't issued until the second... by which point most pre-orders had play long enough in head-start that some pre-order bonuses where obsolete by the time people actually got them (Late model Constitution class for people that where already beyond T2 for instance).
...which is why I got the basic atari store version which costed less and came with no pre-order bonuses.

Sorry, not only does ATi have better hardware these days, they also have better drivers.

we will have to agree to disagree since ati has always been garbage in my book i know plenty of comp fixes i have had to make where the ati card got fried out for one reason or another its fairly common to see an ati card burn out due to someone not knowing how the card works
Yeah. In a sense Nvidia cards are kind of an equivalent of an OC'd Radeon. Although mine was a Turbo Edition automatically clocked at 2200MHz. So I have no head room. However ATI has started to pull ahead now that the 5000 series have been released and it's only getting better. Something AMD should stick to. Their CPU's are similar but I find Intel chips to be more stable and reliable even after OC'in. But yeah. It looks like me and you will be dropping some cash this fall. I've already purchased my i7 2.8GHz Quad, MOBO, one 40GB SSD (OS Drive) and one 150GB Velociraptor for my games and progs. Still have some more to purchase but things are pricey these days.

Funny, I have used ATi since early 2000 I have never seen one fried. I push cards harder then most people and have had no issues. So disagree but if you check the specs of nVidia's cards they bottleneck themselves, just like AMD CPUs bottleneck themselves.

like i said we have to agree to disagree as i have seen several cards fry and not always because the card was oc'd
granted they have gotten better as time has gone on but i still go nvidia for eveything its just a manner of choice because quite frankly the bottleneck isnt an issue if the graphical output looks as good as it does
the cards i have seen are usually cheaper and not as well made as nvidia cards i mean looking around ati isnt as prominent as nvidia is how many game you see with a ati logo at the start up
ati has always just proved itself to me to be subpar at best
but again manner of opinion
and no i wont be plunking down more cash ill run this beast to the ground and then and only then ill build a new one

Funny, the only reason they have the logo is because nVidia pays them to add it. Wasted funding on needless advertising while ATi focuses on making better cards and drivers nVidia wastes money on useless advertising in games. The cards are made just as good if not better then nVidia. Cheaper does not in no way mean it is of lesser quality.
Bottlenecking is not an issues? Do you even know what bottlenecking means? The quality comparison between ATi and nVidia graphics wise makes ATi better as well. nVidia is darker and less vivid while ATi's colors pop out and things look clearer.
Seems you got a couple bad cards int eh past and want to voice opinion as fact. Afraid to give ATi the chance they deserve. By the way you computer is totally out of date, a 1.2 GHz system won't run much, and what it will run won't look pretty. Same with the 7900 that is over 4 generations old.

Apparently you do not get it, completely. I do not hate STO, star trek, or even Cryptic. I do have a problem with how they do business being a former CO lifetimer. I will continue to warn potential customers of this companies practice of taking your money and using to to fund other projects while abandoning the one you have paid to play. Im sure all of the STO fans will realize this when STO gets ignored for unamed project #3 in the works.
Cheers!

well i said it was not an issue if the output is good enough and how little you know this computer has ran with the big dogs just as well as any other comp
ever heard the term you get what you paid for? do you actually think nvidia would have the money to spend if the cards they have are crap? i havent delt with a couple cards myself i have dealt with 4 types of cards and about about 20 comp fixes and the biggest portion of the time it was a crap card that was sold to them by best buy trying to unload thier stock of ati cards since they cant seem to hold any nvidia for very long
9 times out of ten these cards arent worth the box they are put in
you get what you put into your computer the very first card i used on this comp was a $25 ati card a card that fragged out not 3 weeks in to using it i dont oc my stuff never saw a need to do so
and actually i see just the opposite on the graphics ive seen ati and frankly im not impressed they are always one step lower then the current card my nvidia card has been the one thing that holds this whole piece of junk togther if i stuck in a ati my comp wouldnt be doing as well as it does now
i built it with nvidia because i have long term in mind not get a new comp every 15 mins
I just hate SOE and the NGE...oh wait..wrong section.
If anything STO needs a NGE....
I think Crytpic/Atari would get less hate if they looked at a Guild Wars style subscription Model rather than PPM & CS.
Anyone smart will look at and weigh up both the pros and cons of a product before buying it and 'most' of the 'hate' towards cryptic is not blatant griefing trollism but serious concerns about the games so it is good for the industry as a whole.
Yes STO has some fun to it (many will agree)
Yes it is utterly shallow and feels cheaply made and rushed out (many more will agree)
The main thing to remember is who knows who is pulling the strings at cryptic/atari? In this economy no-one wants to get fired so if the boss tells you to jump you say "how high?" Maybe cryptic devs. are held at gun point to make a cheap as possible game for quick profits for atari overlord's cayman bank accounts or any million other reasons.
Ultimate blame lies with the guys with the most power who probably know next to nothing about video games AND with people willing to keep lining their pockets by giving them their money - the first reason no-one short of the IRS can do anything about, the second people can by informing others of their genuine concerns over a product's quality.

Maybe you should take off the fanboy glasses before making claims that Nvidia pays them to add the logo the games, they don't. Nvidia works with the developer of the game to optimize and will even help them with some coding to make the game run better on their cards. In exchange Nvidia will promote the game and the game will add the logo to their intro videos/ads etc. Cross promotion is very common in business. There is nothing wrong with that. Only Nvidia hater's whine about it.
I will buy what is best for my money at the time and currently that is ATI! But to make false claims against the TWIMTBP program is lame. Are you forgetting ATI recently paid Codemasters reportedly 1 million dollars to delay Dirt 2 and add DX11? Paying 1 million dollars is nuts but if ATI wants to help developers optimize for their card and cross promote which they have done in the past, I have no problem with that!
Codemasters taking out Nvidia SLI support after being paid by ATI was mad shady though. If you change the exe to the Dirt 2 demo name, SLI works again, go figure huh. I believe Nvidia worked around it and got SLI working again though.
I have NEVER EVER seen a video card ad on any MMO I've played in years past.. Can you name me one other MMORPG, that charges a monthly fee, that advertises computer parts, cards or whatnots? I"m all eyes
I have NEVER EVER seen a video card ad on any MMO I've played in years past.. Can you name me one other MMORPG, that charges a monthly fee, that advertises computer parts, cards or whatnots? I"m all eyes
What? I have seen a few MMOs that have the 5 second "The way it's meant to be played' video when you load up the game or are in the TWIMTBP promotion, Conan, SWG, STO, Vanguard, EQ2, LOTRO and many more that have partnered with Nvidia. This is nothing new in the world of MMOs or PC gaming.
It is also not an ad, just a 5 second video that says the game plays best on Nvidia cards. It is smart business for them do it as it increases exposure and it helps the developers optimize and make their games look better. This getting off topic, let's get back to STO/Cryptic.
A forum post is a statement of one persons opinion, nothing more nothing less, as long as it doesn't involve personal abuse I dont see that as a problem. If you directly contradict a post with anything other than objective fact then you invite an argument - nothing worng with a civil argument so that isn't really a problem either. Ignore a post you disagree with will see it sink into obscurity much much faster, so that remains under your control, again no real problem with that...
Ultimately the problem is not the haters, or the fanbois, its more basic in that many people appear incapable of making an appropriate response, forums are provided to discuss games, maybe even argue, you can even ignore everything other than the op.... this is not a place to go to DETERMINE absolute fact or nor garner unilateral agreement.... debate is good, questioning fact is good, your opinion and bias can be useful to others, but trying to shut people up is bad and in effect treats a symptom rather than a cause.
KEEP POSTS RESPECTFUL AT ALL TIMES.....we dont know who is on the other end of a keyboard, or forum post, that anonimity is good, rather than use your own anonmity to vent without consequence, use the mystery of everyone else's idenity to use caution...its better you you, its better for them...its better for us.
fair enough, coming from someone who spent better part of my life putting it on the line while being away form my family. I understand the value of a dollar spent better then most and while I see true valid cause for warning about STO. I also see much more bandwagon riding and hate threads cuz its the best way to troll. At any rate waiting for a trial or a buddy pass as you state is best as I honestly am wishing I spent my cash on some old school RPG like a solid Phantasy Star or Final Fantasy.
The next time im whiping my chin...from the sweat of carrying my pack and holding up the front line. I will remember your sitting at home.

great attitude you got there bud
PS: i support the troops in my country but its disgusting if any of them see themselves superior cause of the work they do.
Ok, we get it. You don't like STO, but how many times must the same thread or topic be said. Enough already with the negative threads. I feel everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but once, maybe twice, but over and over again is just repetitive and boring which is exactly what you say you hate about STO. I respect all of your opinions but enough already. The people who like the game will like it regardless of the negative threads you write. For some, the game is fun, for others not, ok then fine, now move on. Constantly trashing Cryptic and their games make this site unproductive and uninformative. You will lose credibility in what you are asking, better content, more challenging gameplay, more imagination, when all you do is complain about the same thing over and over again. You are guilty of doing the same thing that which you are complaining about in the game. It's time to move on. Discuss positive topics, and mostly, have some fun. There is enough hate in this world, let's not add it by saying you wish Cryptic should go bankrupt or throwing bricks at them. They put out a game, the best way they could. You are not being forced to play it, so move on. Can't we all just get along???

I'm glad Cryptic isn't in charge of the national budget.. and even happier that they don't do the programming for my bank

i might add that i run most games flawlessly with exceptions of course and the requirements for sto seem no far off then cox or guild wars hell lotro

Well said, i for one love the game!!!
