Making it "official" is different than random people making it. Sure random people can make it, but when a moderator says its "official" that means Starvault is backing it.
When something is official, the company is behind it and supports it. If Starvault does not support this, don't make it official. Simple.
Even if they do support it, you make it seem like its a real issue. There is already a normal MO irc channel and a MO help channel. These are out of game resources. It's no big deal if they allow another channel for trading. What SV allows in game and what they allow out of game are different.
Some people are attracted to MO because the immersive features.
How is it more or less immersive if you ALT-Tab to a mIRC window then just clicking on the channel in game?
It just does not make any sense. If they dont want it then they should not have an official mIRC channel for it because then they might as well implement it IG. The consequence will be just that people will ALT-Tab to it.
It's immersive because you don't have to use irc if you want to trade with people. You could go to the marketplace in a city and sell your stuff. If they add a global or regional trade channel then it will be used for every sort of chatting. The type of global chat that they don't want int he game. They are designing the game so people have to move their character around if they want to do stuff.
If they add in global trade then it obsoletes the market areas they create in npc towns. If they add in any sort of global chat beyond guild chat then it obsoletes any gathering places they make in the game and discourages players from forming there own.
If you alt+tab then anything you do after that is your own business. The irc channel wasn't made by SV, but SV isn't disputing its creation and designation as official.
What you dont seem to get is that it is an OFFICIAL GAME TRADE CHANNEL. So it is just like they had a channel IG except its not IG. You can tell yourself that it was not made by SV and think people wont use it but they will since it is... wait for it.... OFFICIAL GAME TRADE CHANNEL.
The only difference, from trade channels in other games, is that they created it outside of the game so you need to ALT-TAB. If that keeps the immersion for you then that is nice for you but I bet most people will think. Hey, instead of running around and look for people, I will just go to the OFFICIAL GAME TRADE CHANNEL and trade in there.
Accept that they diddn't create it, irc moderators created it. As long as there is IRC there will be ways to communicate with other players outside of the game. SV can't control the internet.
All it takes for thsi channel to not be 'official' as everyone states, is for SV to say that they don't have an official trade IRC channel. At best this is a community project started by the IRC moderators, who also happen to be forum moderators.
Calling it Official, doesn't make it Official, it's not even a sticky, just a post on the forums.
Edit:
Mo devs have not posted in the thread stating it as 'the' MO trade channel.
SV is going ahead with it's design to not have any global public channels. If you wan't to metagame that is your own business. Sv can't stop you.
If its not official dont call it the OFFICIAL TRADE IRC CHANNEL.
SV diddn't create the channel, and they aren't the ones calling it the official channel. It's not the official channel, no 'official' channel exists.
This irc channel is just one created by the moderators. Only guarantee you get by using it is that the mods will use the same basic ruleset as the normal MO irc channel.

I just thought about it. People making maps for MO are being hypocritical as they want the game to be realistic by not having maps in the game. So they defend this 3rd party IRC channel, saying they dont want chat in the game as it would break the realism. Are we going backwards in development?

They intend on adding cartography to the game, so there will be maps in MO. These maps just won't be in the form of a minimap w/radar and a self revealing map like in other games.
You know just as well as I do that they are keeping certain features within the limits of the game world. In other words they are focusing more on the RPG elements than alot of mmorpgs do.

No one is, people will most likely just ignore the irc channels and just lern to play the game without global chat and actually visit a market in game looking for stuff to buy and sell. Or setup a personal vendor when they add them in.
At best the OP is just trying to make SV look bad because a few volunteer moderators made an irc channel

Devs have stated multiple times that there will be cartography, go search the forums if you wan't to. When they add it and what it's going to be like I don't know, but what we do know is that it won't be a radar-self-revealing-ui-minimap. They are also supposed to add in compases, once again not part of the ui but a craftable/buyable item.
