A rather good game, thank you, Cryptic! // (My biased review)

FIRST OF ALL, im a fan of such games as:

Eve online, Jumpgate, Earth and Beyond and generally most any game that has space ships and space in it, NO MATTER HOW DIFFERENT THEY MAY BE OTHERWISE...... (but im no star trek fan)

SO MY OPINION IS BIASED!!

Well, FIRST THE NEGATIVES: *(Yes, im well aware that the game is not perfect,,, far from it)*

-Extra races for sale? pfft

-Champions online graphics engine ripoff- a little too cartoony for Star Trek, IMHO

-Depending on your love or hate of the game, the quest can get repetitive after a while,,, like most any other MMO i have had the experience of playing

-Doesnt have that much of an MMO feeling considering the fact that the game is mostly instanced, yet there is a standart monthly fee to pay.

-Lack of proper craftin or anything

-We got the combat, but where is the exploration or diplomacy so typical os Star Trek?

-No proper death penalty... i mean i gotta admit:  i hate LOOSING Substantial amounts of EXP or anything when i get killed (Like that final fantasy online game) BUT its too shallow yet....

*****BUT IM STILL LOVING' IT!!*****

Why?

Total customisation:

-u can customise your characters appearance/traits out of a given species, or create a whole new one on your own

-You not oly get to pick uniforms for yourself, but you also get to choose your crew and name/dress em in a uniform as u see fit

-Furthermore, there are COOL PIECES OF KITS / ARMOR that you can equip on your character on top of your uniform and they VISUALLY show up,,, also there are some cool pieces of weaponry to be had

-Almost TOTAL SHIP CUSTOMISATION: Pick the name of the ship that show up on your hull, color your ship to some extend, pick individual VISIBLE/HULL pieces for your ship AKA, Earth&Beyond style, and ofcourse equip it with guns/cannons/turrets etc etc from tip to toe.

Other stuff:

-Ground missions: SURE, they may not be so great, but at least they are there,, AND being able to move around with your character reminds you that YOU ARE NOT YOUR SHIP, RATHER THE CAPTAIN OF IT!! After some space missions, it always feels good to feel the soft touch of earth/whatever beneath my threaded boots!

-Lotsa scripted missions to keep ya buzzy if ur into that kinda thing like me.

-Tonsa random missions to fill in the blanks, there are also a few non-combat missions.

-Generally well-done and satsfying art direction and graphics overall both for ships, structures, characters and equipment. Sound is nice too, after all, its hailing from the star trek franchise.

-LACK of LAG: You may be experiencing rubberbanding, lag spikes or whatnot, but PERSONALLY i have notniced none of em so far,,,, AND HEY!!, This is MY* post so im posting here MY thoughts about MY Experience with the game, YOURS MAY DIFFER, heheheh...

-Overall good performance: MAXIMUM SETTINGS, no lag............Yet again i just cashed in lotsa money for a new system so depending on your hardware setup, your experience may wary.

-YOU ARE THE CAPTAIN:  As i previously pointed out, you are not the ship, you are the commander in chief with your little officers stationed at the bridge obeying your commands and hundreds of your redshirts (the faceless ones:D) doing your bidding repairing your ship and keeping it functional.

-Since you are the captain, you NOT ONLY get promoted yourself (Bigger/better ships etc etc) BUT you ALSO get to PROMOTE YOUR CREW i mean officers. And when ur promoted there is this little ceremony for that,, heheh....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the end, i am well aware of the shortcomings of this game, yet i find myself compelled to play it again and again. The sweet sweet feeling of equipping my CHARACTER -*AND*- my SPACE SHIP and going on adventures gives me that awesome feeling that i might be missing lately from other games i tried.

I recommend this game if you, like me - enjoy being the captain of your own vessel so much that you can overlook some of the shortcomings of this game,  but otherwise id stay away from it for now...

Now back to my ship!!

OH AND PS: As the title says: THANK YOU CRYPTIC!

(RED ALERT!! FLAME SHIELDS UP)

Confused? Could you really not guess that i meant Biased? Yes, thats what i meant, and English is not my native language, so i guess im prone to make some mistakes every once in a while... NEvertheless, i corrected the spelling mistake i made earlier, thank you for the heads up.

Nice post, but taking bets you don't last 2 months playing it.  (not if you are really an EVE player) Not that that's a bad thing, but I'm just saying.

Many many people enjoy GW, though it's not exactly an MMO, as some say, because its instancing. And GW quest can become repetitive kill x number of y or fedex missions. GW is a pretty successful MMO indeed.

Enjoy STO, and be the Captain!

You really should wait a month before writing a "review". Cryptic games have a tendency do fade pretty quickly. They all start of pretty nice with cool effects and alot of action but the shallowness and repetetivenes is evident after just a month of casual playing.

  • Death1942Death1942 Member UncommonPosts: 2,587

RANDOM capital WORDS really emphasise my POINT

still aside from that it really wasn't a bad review (plus you need biased ones to compare and contrast).  I would say you are a little too easily swayed by customisation in favour of game mechanics.  I know I would want a decent crafting system, decent missions and exploration and diplomacy (newish gameplay features) over more customisation any day.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Kyleran: Mostly i dont play any mmo at all for more than about 3 months, with a few games like Anarchy Online and Eve being the exceptions,,  so i cant argue with what you said.

Eridanix: Cheers mate! Yeah, i sometimes think if Star Trek Online was not related to the star trek franchise and just called something like ''star online'' or whateva it could have been more well received:D eheh,, just a though..

Amonsul: yes i should, it was just meant as an initial review. Considering the rumors of lack of content in the game, it is likely that my opinions might change in the future,,, like any other mmo)

Death1942: well, they werent actually random.

  • EridanixEridanix Member Posts: 426

    @Krelian: Cheers!

I'm a fan of every scifi space IP out there and understand very well your point. And the biased review is well balanced, as it includes both aspects of the game. If Cryptic fuelled the title with more content and features they could have a good 2nd position game next to you know which one. But this company has some infamous tendency to jump from project to new project, leaving all abandoned behind.

It is a question of fangs.

LOL. It's funny how if you right a scathing review of STO the haters will say you're dead on, but if you write one that is favorable they say you should wait a month before doing so. How hypocritical can you be?

Plenty of Folks were REAL excited about this Game, liked it a lot the 1st couple of days, then realized shortly thereafter it was not for them...It's not just a response to a positive Review...If I had been asked to write a Review one Week into CB I would have said the Game was awesome...It took some time for the boredom to set in...But once it did it never left...

Anyone can write a Review anytime...it's an open Forum...But with this Game specifically I'm betting quite a few Folks will like it for a week or two...But in a little while, just like me, they will be bored to tears...

And how is this different from ANY other game? I've experienced that myself with a few of them. That's like saying I bet you a million dollars that X game will have people who try it and won't like it. Want to state for fact that the sky is blue next? ;)

And for the record, I've been playing it for two weeks and loving every minute of it.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

It has nothing to do with being hypocritical. MMOs are (usually) made to last so that aspect of the game needs to be weighed in when writing a review. I.e. if in an MMORPG you can go through all content in less than a month of casual playing then obviously that is not a good thing.

It is my experience that Cryptic games, mainly CO, does not: 1. Have enough content to start with and 2: Do not add enough content to keep you interested.

Number 1 is true already (but will maybe take longer than a week to find out, hence the comment) and number 2 will be seen in a few months. So if you are going to write a review then it is usually better to wait atleast one month, unless it is the launch you want to mainly cover.

However if a game has apparent flaws (such as overinstancing) then you dont need to wait a month to find that out do you?

But to each their own.  STO is hemorrhaging for a player-base now that the reality of, what might be considered the most shallow and incomplete mmorpg to date, is settling in.

Played Closed beta (bought the key by 6 month of CO, didn't last 1 week), Open Beta, Pre-launch, and now launch.  I tried to like it.  I bought the lifetime thinking that it could possible improve.  I tried to like it.  Kept giving it chance after chance after chance.

The repetition finally got to me.  How many quests can 1 person stand of go click 5 glowing things, go kill 5-6 rounds of ships, go kill 5-6 rounds of ground npcs?  Now, they XP nerfed the clicky explore quests  (XP NERF = no XP), explore missions at LtC 9 have been lowered from 100+ to 50+.  Looks like Cryptic gave STO is very own version of SWGs Chapter 6 Combat Downgrade in a patch late last Sat night.  Now, 3 frigates blow thru shields like they were nothing, while your crusier "wallows around like a garbage scow next to a warp driven starship".  (Scotty said that in TOS)  Turn rate stealth NERF included therein.  Cryptic touted for a couple years that the player would be able to "skill-box" everything only to find they took the cheap and easy way out and put in a skill cap, right before launch, so they wouldn't have to create new skills as they added content.

Crafting consists of clicky objects taken in trade by an NPC, which the items are not as good as drops anyway.  Combat, in a crusier consists of turn in VERY slow circles while spamming weapons, No finding new races like they touted on their sight for a year+.  Just WoW style combat and leveling and when your done with that, go combat an level an alt.  Until your out of alts, then go to the C-store and buy yourself some more, so you can go combat and level all over again.  Nothing but repetition, in quests, in gameplay, in how you play the game, and whats in the game to start with.

I tried.  I really did.  I waited for this game thru Perpetual and now Cryptic just to find it severly lacking in almost all detail outside of graphics.

    Lifetime canceled and refund coming.

And,,,, your point being? Girls cannot post? Guys whom you think sound like chicks cannot post on MMO forums? What relevance does your statement have about the content of this  thread besides an attempt to be funny? Although i gotta admit, it was kinda funny indeed....

Alas; If my post sound like a girl telling her mother about her new boyfriend,

than i suppose you sound like a girl who is gossiping with her other female friends about that biatch who has a boyfriend, yet deep inside you are sad and jealeus, since u have no boyfriend at all to begin with. I suggest you get a partner/game or whatever it is you are missing and get over it.:D

LOL. It's funny how if you right a scathing review of STO the haters will say you're dead on, but if you write one that is favorable they say you should wait a month before doing so. How hypocritical can you be?

Again, since people seem to want to continually rail on instancing without actually accepting others' points of view... Instancing is a subjective negative rather than a factual one.  It's only "apparent" to YOU.  Other players disagree and actually enjoy instancing.  It's subjective rather than factual.

You sound like a girl telling her mother about her new boyfriend: "Mom he is not perfect, I know that but I love him".

    His cons:

    • Likes to hit me from time to time (because I deserve it)
    • Ex-con who did time for running over people with his truck
    • Cheats me with other women
    • Shallow and dumb
    • Lies to me all the time

    Pros:

    • Looks good
    • Has many fashionable clothes
    • Drives a cool car
    • Has cool friends who own a bar

"I love him and I don't care what you think!"

    LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(BBBBBWWWWAAAAHHH raises plunger in salute to urbanmonkey's post!!!!!)

All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.

Glad to see you have are having a great time OP, after all, isn't that what it's all about.   FUN!!!

I decided to try it and am having a blast.  Will it last, who knows, but why should I even ask the question.  I don't choose a book thinking, hmmmm is this book going to be entertaining to me after I read the 12th chapter?  I better not buy it.   Or even buy a car thinking 6 months down the road am I going to like it like I did from day one.  Maybe I like that quick thrill or new feeling fix, but who cares, why try to figure it out, if I like it, I'll play it.

I didn't have any expectations going in other then, "I hope it's fun" and sure enough, for now, it's fun.  It's different then anything else I've played and that alone for me is worth the price of admission.

I figure, enjoy everything and everyday like it's going to be your last day, and worry about tomorrow when it comes, if it comes.

    My final statement being, I

hope those who don't like STO find what they are looking for.

    Everyone deserves to have fun.
