Any good MMORTS games?

stevo5566stevo5566 Member Posts: 121

I want a free MMORTS, it can be anything but i would like good graphics and has a awesome community. Strategy games are just so fun to me, i still play warcraft 3 Frozen throne. Its starting to get boring and i just want a free good MMORTS. Any suggestions would be kindly appreciated.

Thanks, Stevo!

Mankind, SAGA and BattleForge are the 3 I think of off the top of my head.

     Mankind.

I also think Dark Space has a free account option, whereas Beyond Protocol is P2P only.

Time of Defiance Free to play now days. The community is a bit scimpy, but they get a bunch of players everynow and then. Not that it matters, youll after plenty to run into even with only a few players.

Forgot to mention theres not any rpg elements. so idk if you looking for that or not.

Theres also shattered galaxies flaoting around still i think thats got more rpg elements.

No! Why does everyone say Atlantica is an MMORTS? Does no one understand what an RTS is?!

For one, Atlantica is turn-based. For two, it's not a strategy game at all. Only combat is turn-based and it's an RPG all the way, even in combat.

    *sigh*

    People...

Only MMORTS that I ever played was Shattered Galaxy. It's an oldie but a goodie.

theres a few games you should keep an eye on for the comming years in the mmorts department.

    Dawn of Fantasy

    Kingdom Under Fire II

Angels Fall First : The Second Antarean War

All look like they will be pretty cool games, think Angels fall first is the furthest away, they trashed everything and are rebuilding from scratch and i idk what they are doing with it now(if it will even be persistant)

You won't find better graphics than SAGA. You also won't find much better gameplay. However, I can already tell you mostly left in part to the graphics.

RTS games that aren't MMOs hardly are up to par with graphics, due to the massive amount of resources it takes up. You'll have a hell of a time finding an MMORTS with better graphics.

i hear beyond protocol is good

battleswarm sounds quite interesting but haven't tried it yet or possibly world of battles

Well since a mmorts wont work for me....I guess i could ask for a RTS game then.

I will take any RTS but it should be kinda like warcraft 3 and Warhammer 40k

John I appreciate everything, but if you know any good FREE :D strategy games let me know!

    Thanks, Stevo

Trash is a great RTS that's been compared to Starcraft.

Another one that I've been excited about is 0 A.D.

  • CecropiaCecropia Member RarePosts: 3,985

Here's another one that's free, it's called Glest. Probably not as good as the ones John has suggested, but I thought I'd throw it in.

for free rts u could try rise and fall or the original c&c is now free as are the mechcommander games

for turn based u could try battle for wesnoth, titans of steel or steel panthers

for strategy/shooter i like hidden and dangerous

and an fyi any half way decent sandbox mmo should have an element of strategy to it, especially eve online

for non-free have u tried the battle for middle earth games? and personally i like the total war series

www.mmorts.com/index.php has some u may want to look at

Mytheon is not an RTS either, you summon creatures to help you fight, they follow you around and attack things with you, there really isn't any commanding, or building anything.

In my opinion that site is seriously crappy and definitely out of date.  By the way, this is to the thread starter, ever tried Quantum Legacy? You should also consider buying some RTS games with Multiplayer mode, alot of em are pretty cheap now days.  There's Command and Conquer series, oneo f the best RTS series ever created if you ask me, there's the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War series, there's also Warhammer - Mark of Chaos which is a little more like Total War and Battle for Middle Earth if ya into those type of RTS games.

there's the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War series, the first one would be a better choice than the second. The second is more of a tactical squad-based game than a true RTS. It's awesome, but it's niche.

Low player base and it demands a lot from your system, last I recall.  I strongly dissagree, did you even bother checking it before stating that? heck it can run in a web browser! System specs are as follows:

    512 Megabytes of RAM

    Pentium 3+ or equivalent

GForce 2 or ATI 8500 (or better) compatible video card

I'd say if your computer can't run that it must be more than 10 years old x.x;  Nore would it run any of the other RTS games known for the past 5-10 years!

Although no surprise really, judging by videos even games done in 2k, as its stated this game was apparently made in, look better if you ask me.. I personally like the look of 0 A.D though.

There's Command and Conquer series, oneo f the best RTS series ever created if you ask me, and getting worse and worse with each release. Actually I'd have to somewhat agree here however I still say its a great series, especialy the Red Alert games.  However, I'm beta testing C&C4 and to me its just a cop out of RA3 >_>

There he goes again.. I do actually have you on block John but I just had to see what comments you decided to make this time and saw a need to reply to one or two.. So there ya have it, of coruse my replies are in orange, thanks for responding my post once again it was most enlightening.. well at least you posted an interesting game to look at :P

Anyways, back to informing the thread creator about MMORTS games, I just recalled ProxNora, a game by SOE, donno if its any good but looks promising enough and best of all its free even though its Sony lol. Also, Beyond Protocol has a free trial, I heard about that game before but never tried it, trailor looks good. Also, I located a site listing most known RTS games so I thought I'd post that too, enjoy :)  Oh and also check out Game Ogre and MMORTS Gamers

Note to self: Don't post at stupid hours of the morning, you keep making errors or forgetting things and needing to edit a post x.x

Yeah, I don't trust Game Ogre all that much. They keep too many games that died in the development process in there.

Have you ever played it?! It's a 3D MMORTS that runs in Shockwave! It lags like hell.

Trash is often compared to Starcraft. Graphics aren't everything. That and you can't argue with free.

One was alraedy mentioned, can ya guess which one? :P No, not really. By "tactical squad-based game" I mean you're limited to groups of maybe 5 max. That's drastically different than any other game mentioned here, and many will back me up on that one. I've played both games, for the record.

there's also Warhammer - Mark of Chaos which is a little more like Total War and Battle for Middle Earth if ya into those type of RTS games. In fact, it was often used by myself in the hundreds of hours I played Starcraft. I meant that TW is different in that it's almost a mix of a TBS and an RTS and is completely different from the games mentioned here, including DoW2. It's like mixing Risk with a traditional RTS.

I find your sarcasm offensive. I feel as if you're belittling me. I wonder if I should "take care of it." -_-

EDIT: As soon as I saw EvE on that site you posted, I immediately discredited it entirely.

EDIT2: Ohhh yeah, that RTS site is amazing. Not only is EvE listed as an RTS on that site, but that site also still says that EvE is currently on the Trinity expansion. xDDD

There really are not a ton of decent MMORTS games out there, mostly because its really a hard genre to MMOize. Shattered Galaxies probably has the best system I've seen thus far and best overall gameplay as far as MMORTS. The only RTS game with multiplayer I can stand is DoW/DoW2 however, mainly because it manages to not devolve into "spam 100 tanks/win" or "CY rush, whoever builds turrets first wins, match end 2minutes". If you actually want to play the game, and not just grind match scores with lame rush tactics, I'd recommend DoW2(bonus in that the gold pack with the expansion is coming out the day of the expansion, so you can get both for the price of the exp!). Stay FAR away from C&C3 though unless you like dealing with complete asshandles and really lame *30 second match* rush tactics. Play it for the campaign and then drop it and never look back.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

    EAT ME MMORPG.com!

Hmm, now that ya mention it they even use rush tactics in C&C Generals, I really hated that >_> Although I find they do that in StarCraft and WarCraft too.. I guess its just how some people like to play or rather how they like to force a win rather than enjoy a real battle.  In C&C4 however you don't really have that problem, the construction is alot faster and due to the restrictions of class play they can't exactly gank you off the bat without a good tactical team, so I guess in a way C&C4 is kinda superier to the rest of the C&C series when it comes to multiplayer despite what people might say about it.

I will never TURN back to DoW2......Everything is ruined in that game. They took out all the good stuff from the start of the game, Building was my favorite. But now its a Tactical-squad-based game! I hate it i loved controling huge armies and having the best team.

Also is there anything like LOTR BFME? Thats free.

I used to have it but i lost it.....one of my favorite strategy games.

Keep the Posts commin up....Suggest some more games!!!!!

    thanks, Stevo!!!
