Favorite Bioware Rpg?

metalhead980metalhead980 Member Posts: 2,658

I'm a big fan of Bioware. From Baldur's Gate to Dragon Age I feel these games are simply fantastic.

Not many Rpg developers can deliver such a epic, cinematic adventure.

While I do enjoy other Dev studio Rpg offerings (Square, Bethesda) I strongly believe Bioware makes simply the best Cinematic Rpgs right now.

So let me ask you guys if you had to pick one Bioware rpg what would it be?

I'm leaning toward Mass Effect right now. The story, the characters, the combat and it has more hair standing on the back of your neck moments for me.

Ill set up a poll:

PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

Neverwinter Nights. It is a classic and it is one of the games that put Bioware on the map.

[Something of a necro post. I didn't even realize this board was here until today, and this topic interests me.]

I've played and enjoyed every game on the list, but, and I can't believe I'm saying this, my favorite was Jade Empire. I know, I know, it's crazy. I just really enjoyed that game immensely. The ending was too channeled, the last couple of chapters felt a little rushed, there wasn't enough territory to explore, all of your deeds throughout the entire game could be instantly reversed with one decision, et cetera, et cetera...

...All that said, I just loved the darned thing. I loved the combat, I loved the characters (most of them), I loved the the mythology, I loved the environment, I loved the skill system.  I really, really wanted them to make a sequel for it and improve on what they'd started (primarily by fixing or avoiding the things mentioned above). If DLC had existed when the original Xbox was out, I would've bought everything they put up for the game. I still feel the IP's a keeper, and I hope they revisit it.

All of the other games on the list deserve honorable mentions, and most of them do one or more things better than Jade Empire. BG2 was massive in a way that no game has been since, Mass Effect (1 more than 2) had that incredibly deep story, NWN had the great online communities/shards, KotOR had..well, the Force! Still, whenever I'm looking through my shelves of console rpgs for something to play, I keep coming back to Jade Empire. John Cleese alone makes it worth the boot up, but you just never see Asian-based martial arts games that aren't cheesy, cash shop-driven, Korean grindfests (okay, so that's a bad stereotype, but you get what I'm saying). Seeing what a AAA studio like BioWare, let alone a AAA studio that specializes in morality-RPGs, can do with a fictional Chinese alternate reality made my skin tingle. Playing the game made me feel like I was exploring a high-fantasy version of "Kung Fu."

I could look at the Fox Spirit's Heaven all day long, or listen to Henpecked Hou discuss his wife, or listen to John Cleese disparage the local populace, or knock the stuffing out of enemy combatants with drunken master kung fu *hic*. The game had some issues, but it was inspired, entertaining and easy to get into. It felt very much like a fully-realized world, even if it was a small one.

Ive played all of them! All of them for the win!!!

(BBBBBBBBBBWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH raises plunger in salute to bioware!)

All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.

Mass Effect 1 > all, and I've played them all.

  • djazzydjazzy Member Posts: 3,578

A little bit of a necro post eh? Anyway, I have played all of Biowares games and I like all of them. Probably my favorite is Baldurs Gate 2, and that's mostly due to David Warners voiceover work for the character Jon Irenicus.

kotor, because it was star wars, not because it was bioware.

    debateable

I liked the mechanics of ME2 but I thought the story of ME 1 was much better (even though I did like the loyalty missions of me2).

personally i think KOTOR, but i think KOTOR is the top chosen rpg here because its the only one being turned into an mmo so its a little more known on an mmo website, I loved all these mmos though, not sure but NWN might be better then KOTOR

    MMOs played: Too many
Watch List: FFXIV, CoH:GR, GW2, SWTOR, TERA, Earthrise

I have to go with Baldur's Gate , the original not 2.

one of the best, and strongest story lines, a Huge a amount of exploration, character you enjoyed to play with, and everyone freaked out when Gorion was killed... and kept saying "the friendly arm inn"

by far one of my fav games of all time. It was the game that got my started on computer games.

Baldur's Gate, in fact, I might just have to play that again right now...

  • Esther-ChanEsther-Chan Member Posts: 288

Neverwinter Nights. Hands down! Wow, I loved that game. I played Both Baldur's Gate 1 and 2; In fact, I still have the CDs sitting on my desk, but Neverwinter Nights was just so much better.

For one, it used the new D&D Rules, 2 it had some of the awesomest classes ever! I loved my half-elven Red Dragon Disciple. I still don't know how that worked out.. Half-Dragon/Half-Elf/Half-human, But I didn't care! The wings and tail were awesome. RDD + Barbarian + Fighter + Bard = Destroy everything.

Even though I loved Baldur's Gate and played the Heck out of NWN, in the end I preferred how Dragon Age played.

I think games like BG and BG II had loads of personality and some great story stuff but I never finished either of them. I came close with BG but lost interest at around the last large city.

    *Partial not really spoilers*

ME2, while good, was a dumbed down shallowed shell of the original.  I was pissed when I learned I couldn't explore the citadel and had to be confined to some small instance of the original.  Plus removing loot chopped off a massive part of the depth.

Plus the story was better in the original.

I'm not saying ME2 was bad, but the first was better.

My favorite would be the Baldur's Gate Series.

    KOTOR. Fantastic characters, incredible plot.

Props to Drew for some great writing!!

Man, the first time I marched in confront Malak for the final battle, I think I literally had my teeth bared the whole fight...I was literally pissed at this guy...lol.

And of course, there's the "no fucking WAY!!!" moment when you find out that YOU are Darth Reven.

    Good stuff. Gaming gold.
