I think I may try out Allods until FFXIV. It looks decent, and as long as it can hold my interest for some months to follow it should be fine. Hell, maybe it'll even be fun.

MMO's change every day during development, especially during beta phase. This is especially the case with Japanese developers that tend to operate on a basis that no feature is ready until few months before the release.

That said, if they go and release info on unfinished content now, that will change in the future, that will be bad for them in the end. Players will either see unpolished content and think "wow, thats lame!" or in 6 months see that things have drastically changed and go "wow, they lied to us! it's completely different game!" Either way SE loses.

They'll tell us about the classes, lore, cities and graphical & musical features because those are most likely set in stone, but gameplay based things are still under construction. Also, they don't know what will make it into the full game and what is dropped during the dev process, or left for expansions to take care of. If players see that content that they "promised" to implement is not there, they'll be disappointed.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Just thought i would throw this out, since i watched a 4 month old video with the two main FFXIV guys, that i don't remember seeing before.

The thing that impressed me was they were talking about having a real ECO system, where mobs fight each other all the time. However he sort of sounded like they really wanted to design this into the game, but it also sounded like it is on hold for now,as they are probably trying to speed up production.I just enjoyed hearing that they are always thinking of new ideas, these are true innovative designers, you are not going to get another WOW from these guys.

I am afraid of a few things, like how the class system will be done, now that everyone has on the fly changing.I hope crafting does not become a grouped thing,i really don't like that idea at all.I also hope everything is not geared towards the quests, meaning you have to do every single quest to get your skills/abilities.I hope it is more creative than that, this is a major concern for me,i am really tired of doing quests in games, unless they do them with great cinematics and animations, instead of just rewards like every other game does it.I want quests to be fun,i want to do them regardless of the rewards.

I might also add, that in the interview,Tanaka said he HOPES for a 2010 release, this makes me believe the beta won't be until Q4.I am not impatient,i would wait another 2 years if they give me lots of new ideas for game play and content.

Played AION since launch and like the game. I have not quit yet but will probably be doing so soon.

The community, however is a termite's nest. They have ruined this game beyond belief. With the wholescale ganking going on (its actually worse than any other games I've played with that reputation) through "rifting", and the childish antics of the gankers (setting up a shop over your corpse and calling you a "piece of shit" after they swarm you) the title will take a serious hit very soon. The grind doesn't bother me, but these pvp people really need their own universe to dwell in with their kinah bought gear. The mention of PvE to these people brings rounds of ridicule and "Go play Hello Kitty if you want PvE" diatribes.

Most of the time, my side (Eylos) fights with each other on LFG channel (which is actually worse than Barren's Chat.. wow) while the Asmos rip through easily accessible Eltnen. It's not uncommon to see twinked out level 35s-42s around the Eltnen fort right under the tower ripping newbies that are in a level 20 zone. Yeah, NCSoft allowed 40s to be able to get into a zone where ppl would be level 18-20. Congratulations.

I can only hope that FFXIV resembles FFXI in the lack of PvP department, or these kids will ruin this title.

Currently playing STO which I think is a worse game overall, but the community so far seems better and at my age, that's more important overall. It's also a change of pace from casting spells, which by the time FFXIV comes out, I won't be tired of doing since I'm currently shooting photon torpedoes, lol.

Please do not add any serious pvp to this game, so these kids can pass it by like they do when they see vegetables on their plates at dinnertime. If we can get them to avoid this game like they did FFXI, it would be a good thing indeed.

i agree, too much info can kill the first joy.

I'm looking forward to this game as much as i have ever looked forward to a game i think. Atm i am playing STO but its getting boring fast.

Have been playing all the different shit tossed out on the market the last years.

Not found anything worth wasting my time on.

I've gotta agree that I hope there is very minimal PVP in FFXIV. Some friendly competition would be nice, but nothing that affects the game world by any means.

Some sort of tournament system would be nice, no open world PVP.

I honestly think the lack of info is just typical SE. They never give out much info on anything, I'm actually surprised we have as much info as we do. As for this preventing the game from being over-hyped... maybe. But remember that people already have FFXI to base assumptions on (incorrectly) so by not giving out significant details they're risking people building up expectations of an FFXI-2 when, in fact, I think Square is aiming at a slightly different audience this time around.

FFXIV is more of the successor online to FFXIII in the art style, combat, and hopefully storyline (I like the universe that SE keeps using for alot of its games.)

Still playing Guild Wars,Borderlands and some Global Agenda from time to time. I just wish SE would get off their high horse and give us more info on the game.

I agree with this guy.  Holding information is so SE.  I'm gald to be spoon fed slowly. I think this will leave people alot more satified at launch rather than  the game being over hyped.  SE does a good job of curving the hype train.

I agree with this. I remember the community in FFXI was so great.  I'm hoping this one turns out that way.

Well, I played Final Fantasy XI Online for about four years, but then started to get bored of it. I started playing WoW until I realized that half of it's player base is under the age of thirteen. After WoW, I went back to FFXI out of boredom to find out half my friends had quit the game.

Disappointed, I started to play AION online as it was the most hyped MMOG at the time. After three months of grinding my way to Level 37 and trying to contact NSCOFT (unsuccessfully), I decided to play any and all F2P MMOs out there. That got old in about an hour, and soon after I found myself at square one back on FFXI.

There is no doubt in my mind that this game will deliver, as well as the community.   It will be like an old high-school reunion.

Playing atm: Aion, and yeah, my predictions last year are pretty spot-on as this game is just a filler to kill time until ffxiv comes out later this year! =D

(just hit 50 cleric this week, and starting to get cold feet lol)

I suggest firing up your console! Nothing renews your MMO hunger like console play.  There are some great RPGs out and coming out! Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Star Ocean, and even FFXIII comes out next month.  MMO's are kinda like a gf/bf you'll have more fun with them once you've been away a while lol

Agreed: Time away from an MMO is the best cure for burnout and it gives one time to appreciate many of the excellent console games ignored when enthralled by MMO play.

I would love XIV to be out now, but until then I will enjoy DA:O for some RPG fun, Demon's Souls for when I want to remind myself how much I suck, and White Knight Chronicles when I want a vague MMO feel without the commitment.

I am playing Aion right now but the closer FFXIV is to coming out the more I don't want to play. There are plenty of console games to distract me and my gf is happy too!

In regards to what I am playing, that would be Fifa 2010 when I actually sit down to play anything these days. In all honesty I am waiting for March 9th to roll around and back hand me in the face because I can't wait for 13 to come out.

Tbh, SE don't get half the hype as a publisher as, say, Bioware do. Their games tend to stand or fall on their merits. We all know they can make not so good games as well ;)

I have faith in FF 13 and 14 both though.

Hmm.. I'm not sure about that.. I think perhaps if you look at it from a global standard and not just the U.S., then I think SE has a bigger hype.

SE has a lot more hype in the east than they do over here. They also aren't as popular in the west because their games have previously catered to the eastern market, though their more recent releases have become much more west-friendly in order to try and get a wider audience.

And to Vesavius' point on them releasing not so good games as well: remember that SE are a publisher as well as a developer. They publish a lot of games made by other companies. If you're referring to any of the titles they developed themselves I'd argue that all of their games are high quality, the problem is that some of them are such amazing quality that people are disappointed when another is only great.

In a sense SE are victims of their own success, as people expect all their games to be equally high standard, regardless of how they compare to other games from other developers. FF12 is a good example of this as on its own it's a great game, it's just seen as a disappointment because it didn't live up to the quality of its predecessors.

I'd also point out that they always like to try something new in each of their games (something that far too few developers are willing to risk these days) which causes the popularity of each of their titles to vary wildly according to the players' tastes. (e.g. everyone has a different opinion on which FF is the best and many will even say 12).
