Sold to shops. Because as a developper/distributor (EA) you sell to shops not to indivudual gamers. Games sold for them is sold to retail ... who get stuck with unsold copies.

Warhammer can be bought at some outlets these days for 5 Euro. The same initial stock from launch. It is to liquidate stock.

The initial "print run" was even 1.5 m but they downsized it one week before launch to 1.2 m.

The highest number of players was 800K by EA (3 weeks after launch).

OP : It shows the global population for any new launch is around 500K-800K these days and the distributor launches with some extra hype.

The problem is that the same people are buying/testing.

The products cannibalize each other as one new launch simply replaces the last one.

The western market for paid MMO's  is far smaller than the industry wants to admit: 25 K standard, 100K is a succes, while 200K is a rare exception.

Want a real mmorpg? Play WOW with experience turned off mode and be Pve_Pvp King at any level without a rat race.

This guy is right. The some people are obsessed with star trek. The game's sucess really isn't about mmorpg in this case, it's about Star Trek.

I haven't seen a forum member with a member number higher than 630k-ish.  I guess forum members 630k-1 mil have never posted?  Where are these other 370k members hiding?

The best way not to get dissapointed is to judge a game about a year after release...

Games like Vanguard, DDO, AoC and EQ2 come to mind that improved hughely over the first year(s) after release.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I wonder if it's the same 1 million people buying the games? Maybe it's a conglomerate of people who's sole purpose is to buy up boxed copies of hyped MMORPGs, spread positive and negative propaganda on the boards to raise awareness of the upcoming plot that MMORPGs are poised to take over the world.

STO is an IP so always going to get a decent number of box sales. That being said Matrix Online didn't admittedly.

    Even 800k is not bad. That is a total revenue of $40 x 800k = $32M.

You need to subtract a lot from the 40 bucks.

Unless there is something new i've missed then it's not Cryptic over-hyping but rather the MMO community as a whole. The 1 million registered accounts was mentioned on some website a few weeks ago and stupid people ran with it. Even though it was stated by cryptic themselves that the figure encompasses everyone who ever registered on the games website since the day the site came online, which as you all know was way before the joke that they called closed beta started.

This is old news and not even interesting or even indicative of anything whatsoever.

Is this really the new Business model for major MMO releases.  Shove crap out the door and make your money off over hyped box sales.
If this really the way these companies wish to do business.  As a smart consumer we really should let them drown themselves a few times so they stop rushing out crap.  Games on this scale do not really deal with smart consumers though  (its just a basic numbers thing).  So unless the public gets really badly burned the next go around we will probably continue to see this in the future.

some of those people are having fun, and are quite satisfied with their purchase. I don't like brussel sprouts, but I don't propose a boycott so farmers won't grow them anymore.

I would.  I would do it for all the future children being saved the horrors of having to eat those things.  Wish someone would have done it a long time ago so my parents wouldn't have made me eat those damn things.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

    Agreed.

STO is for some people but not for me. I was more interested in it when P2 was developing it than I was after Cryptic took over the IP. But all the hype and speculation about it (not to mention the name... Star Trek) helped lead to big box sales. Wonder what the next IP for Cryptic to skin over there CO engine will be?

    - Case: Thermaltake Kandalf Black Chassis
    - CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (OC'd 4.2GHz on Water Cooling)
    - Memory: Mushkin 8Gb (4x 2Gb) DDR3 1600Mhz
    - HDD: Dual Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM
    - GFX: (2) XFX Radeon HD 5870 in CrossFire - New upgrade! :)

Where is the evidence that there were 1 million box sales????

    Playing: Fallen Earth
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2 and Secret World

Just wait a few months and the subscription numbers will fall to a realistic level... likely a quarter of the initial box sales, if not less.

There is no such thing as "Over Hyping" its  people saying ZOMG THIS GAME GONNA TOTALY BE PWNZ HAR HAR HAR when you have no idea what you are talking about. So you buy it because the box art LOOKS TOTALY RAD!!

A friend of mine also picked up all three lol. And then didnt stay after the first month. It only needs a major ip, advertising and people who buy without looking any further then the ads. Those ppl simply see the box+free month as trial.

Some companies really go for this strategy. They rush development to push the boxsales and preorders, and then take it slowly to flesh out the game as it was originally planned. If it loses too many subs in the first few months, they put it on lifesupport. Its all calculated.

Some of the companies are just a little more obvious about it I think.

This is why I prefer companies which shut up untill they really have to show something.

A dozen people have pointed out that STO has 1 million forum registrations (which includes me!)  and not 1 million sales (which does not include me!), and yet people keep posting and posting, ignorant and oblivious.

Because it doesnt matter. Most people in this thread are writing about why major ips sell a lot of boxes purely because of the ip. The exact numbers dont matter for that.
