First-Person vs. Third-Person

Hey all,

So during my experience with mmorpg in general, I have seen many different posibilities when it comes to camera angle in Science-fiction mmorpg's.

I have a mixed meaning, I like the First-Person because it makes everytihng realistic.

But I also enjoy Third-Person view, because of the extended possibility of customization. (Gear up character and see changes).

So this leads to the question:

Sorry but this is a bit silly question.

How does a game theme(sci-fi or fantasy, w/e) affects camera view?

Well, it depends who you are. Some people feel it important that they are a part of the character that they are playing, so therefore some would prefer first-person as this would make you interact with the world from a rel perspective... etc.

FPS games need a first person view. Hard to aim your rifle in third person view.

RPGs need both. 3rd person to see what's around you so you can interact with it and not, for example, fall off a cliff. First person for some things, like looking at Mobs or other players close up and being immersive.

As a fan of first-person I wouldn't say that it makes anything realistic; maybe more realistic.  Specifically though, it's immersion that I'm not looking for, not realism, and FP delivers.  I want to be my character, not look at his rear or watch him from a bird's eye view.  FP can add for some unique game mechanics as well which are otherwise not possible; like stealth (not invisibility).

Unfortunately having third-person as an option makes FP almost pointless as TP is always a visual advantage and often necessary.  Developers also tend to focus on TP due to it's advantage and so FP rarely ever gets any animations.  FP becomes nothing more than the view to use while recording video or taking screenshots.

I do like looking at my character's new clothes or whatever, but it's just not worth the inferior immersion and game play in my opinion.

yes RPG need both. Fallen Earth does it best i think. you have the option to use first person "Oblivion" style, or run arround and fight in 3rd person. just awesome.

I enjoy having both but I believe 3rd person view is most important for me. I would be playing DF or testing out MO today if they allowed me to use 3rd person view. Since they dont, someone else gets my money

This, and that's why I didn't vote - there was no "both" option.

I use 3rd person running around, salvaging etc. but always mouse wheel into first person for combat. It feels really natural now and I wonder why more games don't work that way.

Third person. Definitely. I spend way too much time making my character pretty to not be able to see her. I hate First-Person games.

i hate to praise wow cause i hate bliz, BUT i gotta say, i love their 3rd person/1st person use.  Personally i come from a PnP(d&d and Rifts) background and i love mmo's actually  allowing me to see my character progress now instead of just imagining it.  I always carried these images in my mind of what my char looks like, how he moves, how "cool" the gear he crushed people with looked and now i get to see those images come to life.  Personally if you want just 1st person play fps's..seems like thats what they're there for.  MMO's should at least offer both and leave the preference up to the player.  As far as sci-fi specifically, i think Tabula Rasa showed you could have fun exciting game play shooting the crap outta stuff in 3rd person, too bad other parts of TR sucked so bad...

Third person view for me.  I don't mind switching to first person occassionally if I need to, like if I'm in a cramped little building or something, but make a game first person only and I won't be playing it at all.

100% 3rd person for me. Can't play at all in 1st person.

...yes, I sucked big-time in Quake and all other 1st person shooters...

1st person view is much more immersive...

Make it so that you can zoom out from your character and look around, but as soon as you take your hands from the camera movement buttons, the camera will zoom intoo first person view quite fast ...

This allows for the best of 2 worlds, because frankly i have growd tired from the fact that my character is cintinously blocking my view.

3D person for me sorry but I want to see my characters when playing, the only times I play some fps games are shooters or horrors because I admit it adds to the immersion but can't see how can it add to rpgs.

Maybe that sounds like the best of both for you because you prefer 1st person but it wouldn't be the best of both for people who prefer 3rd person.

How about if we set the default in third person view but you can zoom in to first person but as soon as you take your finger off the button it jumps back to third.  As a person who prefers first person view would you be satisfied with that?

I think most games with third person view also have first person view so if you don't like your character blocking your view just use first person.  There you go, problem solved.

Third person for me because I actually get motion sick from watching 1st person too long.

I do also, love looking at my avatar as well since it is a virtual extension of me heh.

I dislike "First Person View" as it makes me feel disconnected from the world to look at one or two hands hoovering around at my screen holding a weapon slicing air.

I played Morrowind and Oblivion but i ever hated the lack of "Third Person View" and the "Slicing Air Combat System" so i never played anything else than ranged fighters and mages...

In "Third Person" i see me and "feel" i am in the world at whole and the overview is better so the lack of the other senses is compensated.

I don't know if I can say I truly prefer one over the other, because both have strong suits. I did vote 3rd-person though, because whenever given an actual choice, I go for the view with more "breathing room". A 3rd-person game lets you be more aware of your surroundings and get a slight angle on things coming up from behind, but a 1st-person game has natural advantages to take into account.

I tried the MO open beta, and have to say the viewpoint works wonderfully. I did tend to use the mousescroll by nature to try and pan out a few times, just habit, but with the addition of such scope in the viewpoint comes better stealth gameplay and "feedback". Getting hit makes your vision reel in the according direction, getting knocked off a horse has a pretty interesting feel to it, and dying is kinda fun with how you hit dirt and look in some direction - sometimes you get a good "final moment" with the sun and some landscape in view and it just "feels" right. Mind you I'm not preaching about the game, but just explaining my piece on the good points of FPS style gameplay... I mean, Condemned for the 360 (nuff said).

I've also always said that 1st-person view is best suited to horror games and anything trying to do stealth without invisibility.

1st vs. 3rd completely depends on the game.  I enjoy both but voted 1st mostly because I'd like to see more devs take a stab at it (1st person is considerably more immersive in the sense that it feels more like you're "in" the game world.)

Put a good deal of thought into the design behind both though (drew up a design doc for an indie MMORPG project) and it made me realize how many game design elements are totally dictated by the camera decision.

i prefur 3rd person so i can see how awesome my avatar is and it also provides a tactical advantage with the viewpoint. Hiding behind a tree or the corner of a wall i can still see whats happening on the other side.

Basically this would be my idea for a first person MMO (which you would not play) that gives people a better methode of vieweing their own character and its surroundings if they wished too

I have never liked 3rd person view. I remember when it first started to get popular and I thought it was silly, then every game on the shelf was 3rd person and its been a sad day for my life ever since.

third person to pvp. you gotta be aware of your surroundings

  • SecurionSecurion Member Posts: 206

I mostly play FPS type of games, like Battlefield and Crysis, but I must say 3rdPS is more in line with what I prefer. The Battlefront, Mass Effect type of aiming just feels so nice. :)

Its sad that 90% of the MMOs in general are so dumbed down its mind-numbing. More 3rdPS games with real aiming please!

Personally  I prefer third person in a MMO.  First person is really not that great since your field of vision is even worse than that of real life.  You also don't get the benefit of your other senses such as smell, touch, or sometimes hearing depending on the game.

Sometimes however, first person view does have its advantage, so my opinion is that it is best to have both since it is not really that hard to have both first and third person in a game.

    Edited for spelling.

wow...its a sad day for me. 3rd person view i find distracting and annyoing. But I have very few options to not have it.
