Ok, I am building another site and my referring party would be my old web professor. Her rule is always stick to building for views of 800 x 600.  I say no, we should start building for 1024 x 768 because I never see anyone using 800 x 600 anymore. So what do you use?  Can I take my point and show her I am right, or do I have to admit defeat? And also, please tell why you use this res.  Thanks!

I use 1024x1280. But I tend to agree with your friend, It's a safe, funtionable size. No one uses lower than that anymore, but it's still large enough to look alright.

I use higher than 1024 x 768. Any lower than that, it looks awful.

1024x768 is not too big or not too small. my viewsonic 15" lcd only goes up to 1024 anyways. I think my friend leaves his on 800x600 (he is a newb that thinks he knows stuff)

Really hard to get used to a lower resolution after you've went higher really. I used to use whatever was 1 step higher than 1024 x 768 and it took me weeks to get used to 1024 x 768 again.

Personally I would NEVER go below 1024 x 768 anymore.

Well actually...taking a poll from this website won't help too much because I'd say the majority of people here play games and with games you'd most likely want a higher resolution so therefore, there ya go!

But ya my teacher says the same thing, but shes sorta...dumb in the head! ::::06::

    1152 by 864 here.

    Think it's the perfect size.

800x600 easy on the eyes any smaller gives me a headache and yes my perscription is perfect. without glasses left eye is 20/20 right hella bad but like 40/20 with glasses. my best friend keeps his that high rez and gives me headachs so i never use his stuff.::::20::::::28::

I tend to agree with Omega. This site is about and for gamers, so high res is the key. Gamers and developers use the high res for the quality, which means good AGP vid cards. Now bear in mind your target audience. Would it also cover people with lower end and/or older systems? If so, you'll have a boundary problem which'll turn people off.

General rule of thumb: If you don't care if non-techies don't hit the site, make it in 1024x768. If it's for the general public, play it safe and stick with the 8x6

P.S. Personally, I use 1024x768, because it's a good balance between res for gaming and functionality for docs and spreadsheets

    Hmmm 1024x768 for a 25 inch monitor is equivalent to a 800x600 for a 17 inch...
Maybe you should pump it up alitltle more

okayokay, I over exaggerated abit. It just seems like way too much space on my desktop.

If you take a look at http://www.echoecho.com/ it provise the following percentages:

    54% 1024x768
    28% 800x600
    10% 1280x1024

So I would probably target the 54% but still make it legible for the 28%. Of couse it also makes a difference the market you are targetting with this site.

I use 1280x1024 cause anything lower looks pants.

On the topic of perception and screen size... could all the game Devs reading this Plz let us have a FOV of 115 and not goddam 90? Plz as my old tweaked FPS configs were always 110-15 and when I now playa FPS at 90 its feels like running around looking through binoculars ::::16:: ....I'm ruined waaaa!

I run 1900x1200 becuase I have the Apple Cinematic 21 inch flat panel.  For website development you really need to think about your target audience.  If your site will be aimed at gamers, then you should set it for the higher rez.  If you want general public to view your site then you might want to stay with the 800x600.  Just my thoughts.

i use 1024x768, my monitor goes to 1600x1200 but when i use that the icons are super small and words are very hard to read (17' monitor). 1024x768 is the perfect combo of size and clarity for me.

I use 1280x1024, simply because its the optimal resulution for my tft ::::39::

  • DekronDekron Member UncommonPosts: 7,359

Thanks for the replys. As my target audience goes, it's pretty much the same type of crowd we are here at mmorpg.com (no I am not building yet another mmorpg site ::::02::, couldn't compete with this one anyways!). My professor just seems to be stuck in the "dark ages". Whether it is gaming, programming, site design, image design, flash design, etc, I could never use anything lower than 1024 x 768.
My professor always builds for 800 x 600 and she is real big on CSS. Whenever I go to her sites, it just looks horrible on my screen. It's not that everything is smaller, but her CSS rules cause everything to bunch up and overlap, but when I build for 1024 x 768, you just have to scrool a bit to see content. Thanks again.

I would love to use 1600x1200, but my monitor only supports 1280x1024.
