-sigh- I wish DF supported Xfire You should post system specs if you expect helpful answers. If your system is $2000+ chances are you are probably running dual ati cards if so disabling Xfire might help ALOT.
Now if only Nvidia would hurry up with their next line of gfx cards
So i downloaded the game yesterday and paid the 1$ for the 7 day trial. What a waste of money for me. Once I was able to log in to the game I was unable to play. The game continued to freeze when i switched between play mode and interface mode. I couldnt even move around the map. I quit restarted many times and have had the same issue over and over. My system is only 3 months old and is a $2000 gaming system so i know its not my system. However has there been any issues with certain video cards or Directx versions or anything like that.
On a plus note the graphics look great. I was excited to play.
I also could not even run this on 800 x 600 mode
My experience with the trial has been hit and miss. My biggest quirks with the game are definitely shying me away and believe it or not they have little to do with PvP.
Quests are difficult to find. There are no gleaming beacon to point to quest givers. One might say to you this adds immersion; and I would agree, if it were not for the fact that most quest givers have very little dialogue. The NPCs in Darkfall have very few voice overs.
The sound and Music in Darkfall is almost non-existant. Now, I've only experienced the areas outside the town, but I can say that those areas are pretty silent.
The skill system in Darkfall is interesting, but some skills level at an alarmingly fast rate compared to others. For instance, few twangs of a bow and you can be level 25 in archery and armored archery in no time, but killing 30+ goblins will barely earn you 1 melee skill point.
Looting and inventory management is a nightmare. You have to sheathe your weapon whenever you loot. Now this isn't a problem when you're doing PvP as your opponent is dead and buried, but this is a huge problem when you're doing PvE, as the respawn rates of enemies is very high. Kill a goblin, go to loot it, and before you can drag all the items to your bag, you have another goblin or two beating on you. And if someone feels like it, another player as well.
Equiping items just feels unnatural. For instance, when you collect arrows and equip them, any further arrow you collect will not automatically be added to your equipped pool. Instead, then will sit in your inventory. When your equipped pool runs out, these arrows are also not automatically added to your quiver. This is incredibly annoying in PvP because you have to dig through your inventory just to equip arrows.
There are lots of arguing going on in chat. In fact, most of chat is "So-and-so" is a noob or "Come fight me if you are so tough".
The graphics of the game really aren't that great. They feel akin to Vanguard.
The character creation is pretty bad. Your character's face can't be edited. Instead, you have a series of "skins" that you can choose from, while adopting the same head with each one. The first head you see at character customization is the only head you can get. The difference is the few scattered heads with makeup on them. Dwarven females are truly ugly. In fact, Ork females are far more beautiful in comparison.
The interface isn't intuitive, but this is minor because it just takes some getting used to. Right-Click brings up the menu, which is really really annoying to people used to panning the camera with it.
PvP is almost always one sided. You have people running around tossing fireballs and arrows at each other, while jumping at near super human heights. The loser just mounts up and gallops away. The difference in skills really shows here and rarely do you find someone with the exact same skills as you.
New players start with WAY too little health. You pretty much have enough health to kill 3 goblins before you have to sprint away as fast as you can back to town so you don't lose all your items. Get used to sprinting to the bank every 15 minutes of PvEing, because you will die. A lot, and when you die, you lose everything.
Combat feels a lot like Oblivion, but worse. Archery is done in First-Person and real time, which means if you don't connect with your arrow, it won't connect. There is no targeting in Darkfall, which is a good thing for PvP, but awkward in a MMORPG. Melee fighting just feels boring, and the animation is terrible. Your character slashes and slashes until the enemy goes dead. The enemy just darts around; circling you like a monkey on a unicycle. When it dies, it's body "Floats" along the ground, leaving behind a tombstone saying "Here lies so-and-so"
So far the good things have been very little..
The community has been incredibly helpful to new players. Any question you ask will get answered by someone via a whisper. The tabbed communication chat is a helpful addition to the game and makes talking to other players a breeze.
The freedom in which you are allowed can be overwhelming, but it is a nice change of pace. You can get out and start crafting right away, or PvPing without having to go through long tutorials, or boring cut scenes.
That's about it for the good things... All-in-All, Darkfall isn't the game for me. Not because it's bad, but because it just doesn't cater to today's bred MMORPG players. And what I mean by that is MMORPG players used to MMORPG style controls. Darkfall has a steep learning curve, brutal gameplay, and long skill grinding sessions. As a new player you can expect a helpful community with powerful control over how *you* want to play, let it be said that the best players are "Jacks-of-all", so in reality you are a carbon copy of everyone else, the difference being who has a higher armor skill, or magic skill, and so forth.
That's all I have to say about Darkfall. Thanks for the free trial! It was interesting at least!

Anyways...
Yeah, Darkfall probably just isn't for you. I thought that when I you said that you spent $200 prettying up your MapleStory character. :P
However, you might want to try the game again after DF 2010 is in. They seem to be addressing more than half your gripes in it.

It seems to me that this game seems to be a game where people either love it or hate it. Maybe others can shed some light on this.
Speaking for myself I have been playing for 11 months now and I liked it on day 1. there are some key elements that are very hard to find in most other games which makes it so appeal to me personally but my view is the game either speaks to you or it doesnt.
Kind of like jazz
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Actually, technical issues were none to be found. I had no issues with graphic corruption, or loss of control. Those issues are "Features" that I posted above. And you are right. I did spend over $200 on my Maple Story character, but I do enjoy a brutal game every now-and-again. If I could dress my character in some stockings, a mini-skirt, garter belt, 6 inch stiletto heels, and a corset, I would. I would also like a boot-kicking skill that allows me to stab my enemies with my heel. I'd never need any weapons!
I had similar issues on my state of the art system. I just disabled the three shadow options and everything is perfect now, instantly fixed without reboot.
"The King and the Pawn return to the same box at the end of the game"
I was saying that your post isn't really on-topic, and should probably be elsewhere.
I just had to throw in the MapleStory comment because I immediately thought of how you'd find DF's character customization lacking when I read it... and because I quit after about 10 minutes in that game.
I'm referring to OP's technical problems. I was saying that your post isn't really on-topic, and should probably be elsewhere.

You're right, it probably does belong somewhere, but having been suspended for virtually no reason, I try not to take my chances anymore =P

That, and people who would benefit from your post probably won't ever find it.

True, I prefer the Darkfall system to WoW-type questing though. It's getting more hard for me to stomach the linear questing/theme park games but everyone has their tastes.
The sound and Music in Darkfall is almost non-existant. Now, I've only experienced the areas outside the town, but I can say that those areas are pretty silent.
Yeah, I'm torn on if I want more or not. If they're going to add more, I just hope I can still hear footsteps because that's what's most important in Darkfall...if you want to survive that is.
The skill system in Darkfall is interesting, but some skills level at an alarmingly fast rate compared to others. For instance, few twangs of a bow and you can be level 25 in archery and armored archery in no time, but killing 30+ goblins will barely earn you 1 melee skill point.
The system helps new players advance faster, I can assure it doesn't stay that way and slows down.
Yep, it's realistic, no auto-loot here. With practice you can get fast at it but it's definitely not care bear looting.
Although I wouldn't mind an auto reload on arrows, the reason they do that is in line with the game's design, similar to looting. In Darkfall, you have to actually do things for yourself instead of relying on the game to make your decisions like other games. Like I said, Darkfall is not care bear and certainly not for everyone.
There are lots of arguing going on in chat. In fact, most of chat is "So-and-so" is a noob or "Come fight me if you are so tough".
Blah, chat is atrocious most of the time. I try not to listen to the kiddies shake their epeens around lol.
The graphics of the game really aren't that great. They feel akin to Vanguard.
Um, I don't know how much you adjusted your settings but they are superior to Vanguard IMO. But I love the realistic look verses animated-ish style.
Yeah, I'm hoping they address this and add more options in the expansion this year. I'm a fan of customization as well.
The interface isn't intuitive, but this is minor because it just takes some getting used to. Right-Click brings up the menu, which is really really annoying to people used to panning the camera with it.
It takes some time to get used to no doubt but after awhile it's second nature.
PvP is almost always one sided. You have people running around tossing fireballs and arrows at each other, while jumping at near super human heights. The loser just mounts up and gallops away. The difference in skills really shows here and rarely do you find someone with the exact same skills as you.
How long did you play? That's a little short-sighted if you ask me. There are players of all degrees of skill levels, perhaps you just witnessed veterans fighting. There's plenty of PvP to be had on your level near the lower level spawns.
Yep, it's not care bear. When you start out you have to actually be careful and run occasionally. This game is going to be too rough and tough for some no doubt.
When it dies, it's body "Floats" along the ground, leaving behind a tombstone saying "Here lies so-and-so"
I disagree with you there on most of that. I find combat a blast because it takes skill to aim and such. I don't really care for the "lock on" system of button smashing. The animations do need to be addressed and I believe they are in the next free expansion.
Good luck in your next MMO, I hope you find one that suits you better.

-sigh- I wish DF supported Xfire You should post system specs if you expect helpful answers. If your system is $2000+ chances are you are probably running dual ati cards if so disabling Xfire might help ALOT. Now if only Nvidia would hurry up with their next line of gfx cards
DF do support crossfire. My 4850 1 gb in crossfire works like a charm. According to gpu-z that shows that my gpus are working alot.
So i downloaded the game yesterday and paid the 1$ for the 7 day trial. What a waste of money for me. Once I was able to log in to the game I was unable to play. The game continued to freeze when i switched between play mode and interface mode.
I have heard about that problem before, I believe there could be solution to it.
Ask on the official forums, but support with your PC spec.
I had the same problem with switching between combat and gui mode. It was my keyboard of all things. I have to unplug it right before I hit "play" and only plug it back in once the game has loaded. That will probably correct the problem.
Only way you get some freeze up if you use OS32bit and maybe only 2gig ram then switch to UI can freeze up a little also when you run all in very high and shadows at max also even when top notch pc it still can give problems with framerate drops.
Best is try some different settings find out what your pc can handle like disable shadows or just put them on medium then it mostly give np.
There is on offcicial site a guide for this problem also.
ATI/NVIDIA both run smooth becouse i got 2 pc's both ATI and NVIDIA and np both.
Btw most replys here even they try to help are not solution like keyboards or ati/nvidia or run a program back ground these are not issues you have.
Put shader model on default and shadows on medium you wont have any problems.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

My experience with the trial has been hit and miss. My biggest quirks with the game are definitely shying me away and believe it or not they have little to do with PvP.
So far the good things have been very little..

A thread that has to do with technical problems probably wasn't the best place for the post. >.<
Anyways...
Yeah, Darkfall probably just isn't for you. I thought that when I you said that you spent $200 prettying up your MapleStory character. :P
However, you might want to try the game again after DF 2010 is in. They seem to be addressing more than half your gripes in it.
Good luck on finding the MMORPG for you.

I'm referring to OP's technical problems.
I was saying that your post isn't really on-topic, and should probably be elsewhere.
I just had to throw in the MapleStory comment because I immediately thought of how you'd find DF's character customization lacking when I read it... and because I quit after about 10 minutes in that game.

Yeah, I'm torn on if I want more or not. If they're going to add more, I just hope I can still hear footsteps because that's what's most important in Darkfall...if you want to survive that is.
The system helps new players advance faster, I can assure it doesn't stay that way and slows down.
Yep, it's realistic, no auto-loot here. With practice you can get fast at it but it's definitely not care bear looting.
Blah, chat is atrocious most of the time. I try not to listen to the kiddies shake their epeens around lol.
Um, I don't know how much you adjusted your settings but they are superior to Vanguard IMO. But I love the realistic look verses animated-ish style.
Yeah, I'm hoping they address this and add more options in the expansion this year. I'm a fan of customization as well.
It takes some time to get used to no doubt but after awhile it's second nature.
How long did you play? That's a little short-sighted if you ask me. There are players of all degrees of skill levels, perhaps you just witnessed veterans fighting. There's plenty of PvP to be had on your level near the lower level spawns.
Yep, it's not care bear. When you start out you have to actually be careful and run occasionally. This game is going to be too rough and tough for some no doubt.
I disagree with you there on most of that. I find combat a blast because it takes skill to aim and such. I don't really care for the "lock on" system of button smashing. The animations do need to be addressed and I believe they are in the next free expansion.
So far the good things have been very little..
