You are aware that any group of players larger then composed of a single one, is subject to viral marketing?

The nature of a website which has a "hype" rating and fan articles about games which want to have more customers (all of them ;) )  can not escape it.

I'm sorry to say this but anyone voting "no" or "I don't know" are slightly special.

Isn't all word of mouth viral marketing?  In that case "viral marketing" has been around forever.

What was the point of this thread?

Hey, did you guys breath air today?  Inquiring minds want to know....

Ok, for those that don't understand what the OP is talking about, viral marketing is people employed specifically to come to MMORPG.com to promote the game of their employer (or hell, even trash talk the game of their employer's competitor) in the forums while acting like a disinterested party.

    And yes, it happens.

That is the dirty type of viral marketing, which I doubt is anywhere near as wide spread as conspiracy theorists would like to believe.

The frequency wasn't the question. Whether it does or not was. And it does.

Also, its not the dirty kind. Its the only kind. If it happens organically, it is word of mouth, and it can be viral. Once you throw the word 'marketing' in there, it refers to what I described.

Well, it certainly took AmazingAvery on the AoC boards long enough to fess up that he was on Funcom's payroll.  I can only imagine there are many others.

One complication is that there surely are a lot of blind fanboys who aren't on anyone's payroll.

I think the warning signs tend to be someone who is always on and responding positively about the game, but who also is pretty polite most of the time. :D The politeness is probably stressed by company policy.

A rabid fanboy who just seems like a dumb **** and is rude to everyone is probably just that and nothing more.

Dude, this place is virtal marketing central for this crap. Spam accounts/blogs for the F2P ones, and lots of hidden shills and some pretty obvious ones (AoC) for the bigger titles, hell, there are even a handful of mods and CMs and bandy their fanboy around inappropriately. There is a reason this place is ground zero for MMOwars, you have people fervently defending even the most ridiculous things because if nothing else theres a few people being paid/with some sort of interest in it.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Actually it is not the only kind, it is just the negative kind.  You are right in the word of mouth.  Thats all viral marketing is, an attempt to get people to talk about their game.

A certain sodapop (can't remember the name) had a marketing campaign asking people to send in photographs or themselves, family, dog...  Those pictures would be on the labels of their sodapop.  People loved that idea, they talked about it with everyone, that is a great example of viral marketing - something the company did that promoted word of mouth.  There were no schills, no paid people (in that campaign anyway) to say it is the best, others are the worst...

    You get the idea.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

Ok but in your example the company was involved. The people I was responding to were equating unprompted word of mouth with viral marketing. To me, lots of things can be viral but once you throw in the marketing you referring to something that at some level has been initiated by a company for their own benefit.

If watching and owning every version of "invasion of the body snatchers" has taught me anything (and it has!) is that if someone offers you a cabbage or you find one under your bed RUN!

almost half the time i make critical posts i get a warning on this site.  its absurd.  but when a web site has a revisting population, it will be privately confronted by marketing representatives which inevitably makes nearly every source of information biased.  but thats greed for ya.  most of the "people" who work on sites liek this clearly see this as a stepping stone into more viable comapnies.  they dotn care about you guys.  if you were offered a position to get your foot in the door wouldnt you take it?  most people would.  even if its just a mere offer for a chance at an interview which might not even pan out or be a fake offer in the long run.  it doesnt take much to snag someone in a competetive business like the video game industry.

i coem here because theres no invasive advertising like on ign.  you will have to put up with bias everywhere.  and face it guys... the companies need to manipulate marketign because all of their games suck, or are unfinished at release.

Viral Marketing is more or less defining the channel and how you promote the message. Almost everyone utilizes viral marketing in this digital age. The misconception is that Viral Marketing completely defines into Stealth/Buzz Marketing. That's where the promotion or message does not carry the brand name per say and people don't know their being marketed to. Both have the similar goals and go hand-and-hand to generating good word of mouth.

There are some pretty heavy laws between what you can do with viral marketing and what you can't do. I think a lot of what you see or what some claim are in assumptions that some spam in order to create buzz (marketing) around certain games or brands. Nonetheless, it's an interesting topic at least from a community management point of view because we all help promote the overall message -- our great game.

Look out for the guy who has done less than five posts and is telling you how fabulous this new game is. Or the guy with less than five posts telling you how great a expansion pack is.

    wiki is your friend.

    even more so than google!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_marketing

    Stealth marketing != viral marketing.

Viral marketing means creating something that will spread through word-of-mouth.

What you're talking about is stealth marketing, which is actually quite the opposite. If viral marketing needs support from questionable methods like stealth marketing, it obvioulsy failed.

Call it stealth marketing, damage control, viral marketing, public relations, it's everywhere.

you would have to be a tard or live under a rock to not see that this site is here only to market games

flip threw the game list click random games at will you will notice that over the last 4 months well over 1/2 the screen shots posted are no longer player submits but cartoons made with a sight gist of the game

why remove the screen shots and replace with cartoons? would you down load a game that you could see befor hand its graphics blow ? dont lie to your self you know as well as i do that you wouldnt

but that nice colorful cartoon in the screen shot section looks so nice i bet thats a good game. and haveing wasted a hour downloaded this game and then seeing it looks like garbage are you going to uninstall that very min. ? most likely not . and so 1 or 2 out of a 100 may just end up playin that sorry game for lack of a better game to play at the time

thats the ugly face of marketing baby ya cant hide from it
