No "official" videos until preorders get into the early access

Just an update on the video questions.  No videos, but they will post updated screen shots when the new speed tree/grass is implemented.

www.xsyon.com/forums/6-general-discussion/1472-where-are-the-videos

Xsyon Dev:

At this point, the plan is to let players make gameplay videos, for several reasons.

1) Saves us time. We're a small team and right now the main concerns are to keep improving the game features, ironing out bugs and get you guys playing.

2) It probably sounds strange, but we don't want or need more hype. We're building a nice small community right now and that's exactly what we want for the Prelude.

3) As mentioned above, a developer made video might not reflect real gameplay. I think it's just inevitable if I turn some artists loose on making game videos they will make them as nice as possible and we do have flexible camera views to do so. Also, we are more familiar with the game.

Player made videos are good in my opinion as they will reflect more what the first time player sees.

inferno's question:

Jooky, can you guys at least release more screen shots of different features in action? I was waiting on a video to preorder the game, many of us do not want what happened with Mortal Online to happen again (ie preordering before any information is known to actually exist in the game)

Xyson Dev:

Inferno, once we get the SpeedTree upgrade fully integrated we plan to release more screenshots, let people release videos etc.

A problem with this SpeedTree upgrade is that it required us to upgrade all tree models. Rather than use trees from the SpeedTree libraries, we've had to create our own trees for the most part (We're using only trees that exist in the Tahoe Basin).

We've been temporarily testing with SpeedTree library trees, but they are way off, and we're not going to release any screenshots with the temporary trees in.

If you want to wait to pre-order, that's no problem. We prefer to start off small and add players over time, rather than start off big.

They are saying all the right things...

Could this be an indie company that goes about game development the right way? Start and finish things one at a time / small groups instead of trying to do everything at once? Hmm.

It sounds like bullshit to me. "We won't release videos, but we'll allow players to do so if they're willing to pay for our game that we refuse to show you actual screenshots or footage of...".  Just like the "it's not a paid beta except that nobody from the public is in beta, because it's all in house, and you only get to come into beta if you pay us for a product we refuse to show you..."

    1. There are already screen shots, so there's no excuse not to release other screenshots
      • We've already seen what's allegedly in the game as of today, no?
      • Irrespective of flora, why not release screenshots of the UI?
    2. "We don't want or need more  hype"? Really?  That's why news of Xsyon has suddenly exploded?  Even if that quote is true, it's not good business to solicit sales without offering evidence of your product, hence all the "scam" accusations.  Put out a video and allay concerns.  There's no excuse not to unless the game is in such a poor state that footage would actually hurt sales, in which case taking preorder money borders on fraud.

I can accept the devs response as a good one,and you know if i thought they were feeding us BS i would say so .:D

Problem is there are so many darn games out lately ,my head hurts,i can't keep track from one game to the next.

I would preorder if I had the option of getting a refund before the game launches. I haven't preordered a game since Guild Wars, but so many people seem to get burnt on preordering on no solid information that I'm not willing to drop my money on it.

    .

PS inferno you should of just sent me a pm instead of calling me out like a loser on irc. k thanks. It was a real dickhead thing to do TBPH and obviously if you would of just PMed me and asked me to remove this comment I would of, but instead you had to come on IRC and pull my strings. I don;t know what thing offend certain people, that would offend me and even if it did i would care. But calling me out where i spend my time isnt cool, at all. So next time if you will, use the PM system instead of pushing me over the edge.

This is probably the weirdest game I have ever seen/heard. No hype, no videos, and up until about a month ago, not even a name. It was like "poof".

This if somewhat fishy.  If in a few weeks they start saying that they are delaying the release or the game or the entrance of preorder players into the game, it's going to be REAL fishy.

  • Ah ah, prolly. Is because i don't do pre-orders before i read some reviews. :D

  • Mad+DogMad+Dog Member UncommonPosts: 785

Not read any of the posts but the from the title of this thread htye are having a laugh. This just shouts scam to me!

If they had shown me some vids and it looked OK I would have pre ordered it....

Nothing would surprise me.. But I would rather listen to someone say they dont want much hype instead of saying their game would be UO x100000 and then not even reach 1% of what UO was ( * cough* DF , MO * cough * ).

If you want player made videos, then  where are the beta invites ?

Self publishing has its positives and negatives.    Indy devs tend to self publish their own things and try to go online only by word of mouth.    Yes,  they get all their money back minus a few dollars from the payment system and get to make full decisions on what direction the game will go which most everyone who finds a publisher will not get.    The problem is the "gamer" population consists of 20'ish yo boys who have zero ethics and are willing to screw over anyone if it keeps an extra dollar in their own pocket.    People use these "non-refundable"  pre-orders as pre-meditated trials and just get the credit cards to give them refunds if and when they are not pleased.     Its no different than picking up a game on the shelf at the local store,  finding out its not for you and trying to return it -  which you will find out your local shopping palace will not accept.

IF YOU DONT WANT TO GAMBLE ON A GAME, JUST WAIT FOR REVIEWS OR A FREE TRIAL!

I dont see why thats so freaking hard to do?

Both are possible thats why I am waiting for gameplay footage to buy instead of speculating.

Thank you, we will be needing it. (Although I never pre-order. I will simply buy at launch.)

the dev guy on the forums said preorder people get in beta next week, ready to see if this is real.

  • DistopiaDistopia Member EpicPosts: 21,183

If it's real, I have to say they're playing it smart with the secrecy. However, the pre-ordering scenario sends red flags flying IMO.

The secrecy I can deal with, especially in this day and age where hyping seems more important than delivering.  The problem is they are not releasing anything that shows this is a legitimate product. I can see another age of mourning fiasco brewing up.

The approach to development is where they show promise (if legit ofc), rather than build the world let the players do it. That's smart IMO. If the game is any good this will really set the stage for a long living virtual world. The players will feel an attachment to their surroundings, as it has a personal touch.

By the way anyone interested in playing something similar to this before it releases check out the RTS mod for fallout 3. It doesn't have terraforming but it's still a great addition to FO3 makes it a completely different game IMO.

  • BenediktBenedikt Member UncommonPosts: 1,406

well, since before "the devs" were saying that gameplay video will come on next week or two, (it was like 3 weeks ago), my "it is probably scam" probability assessment goes from 70% up to 90%.
