Cryptic is charging people that cancelled there accounts!

RuytooRuytoo Member Posts: 17

Have a cancelled account? Check your bank statements, you may still be getting billed! I did a little checking around the web and it would appear I am not alone on this matter. There seems to be quite a few people that cancelled there account yet are still being charged! I cancelled my account 2 weeks ago but I was charged on March 4th (as was everyone else that started on or before Launch Day). My account shows its cancelled in the Account Info section and I received a confirmation email at the time on cancellation.

Thanks to this, I was charged $70 in overdraft fees on my bank account which I now have to beg and plead with my bank to remove otherwise I won't be able to pay some of my monthly bills (and those of you thinking of making a smart comment about not having 15 bucks in my bank account, try living on unemployment and see how much you are able to keep in yours).

I have a feeling this happened to alot more (hell maybe even all) people that cancelled there account than is being seen yet because they haven't checked there bank accounts yet. If it is that massive, Cryptic is gonna have a major storm headed there way.

Sigh ... here is the email to spell it out for you.  Not sure what is so hard to understand about receiving a confirmation of cancellation email.

    The email reads as follows:

    Dear *******,

This email is to confirm that you have sucessfully cancelled your Recurring 1-Month subscription. We are sad to see you go! To reactivate, simply visit https://www.startrekonline.com/user. Your characters will be there waiting for you!

Thank you for subscribing to Star Trek Online!

    Sincerely,

    Cryptic Studios

It was sent on 2/24 right after I cancelled.

Im not going to make a smart comment on you not having 15 bucks in your bank account but I will make a comment on why you're playing video games while you're unemployed. Sounds like you dont have your priorities straight.

It's called a Christmas gift with a free month of game time, thanks.

Did you check your bank account or cryptic account?  Make sure you check your bank account.  My game account is listed as cancelled yet they still charged my bank account.

Depends on where you live, your age and other stuff... I've lost my job December 2008 and still haven't found anything yet. In case you did not notice, we're somewhat in the worse crisis since black Tuesday back in the 1930's.

About coming around when unemployed... Good thing I'm in Holland - we have some kick-ass unemployment arrangements ;)

    Back on topic...

Cancel the payment - dispute the creditcard withdrawel of the payment.

...and I'm lucky I never added my creditcard data during the STo beta and decided to skip STo as a whole...

Yep, went to my bank today to file an illegal withdraw affidavit.  Now its just a waiting game to see if I get the money back.  Even with that, I still have to go in Monday and beg the manager to remove the overdraft fees.

Yeah, overdraft fees are the worse case scenario with these kind of monthly fee errors.  I suggest to the OP and everyone to completely disable overdraft "protection" with their bank.   That way when Cryptic or whoever falsely charges you, they are simply told "cannot complete transaction, player has no money."   This makes your bank extremely sad, but anyone who is unable to keep a savings balance should really disable overdrafting.

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

Or you can do what I did once when I was really, really poor and defraud the bank like $50 so that they won't get you in trouble for it, but they will prevent you from having an overdraft ever again.

Excellent suggestion, I didn't know you could opt out of that.  Will check with the branch manager when I go in Monday about the overdraft fees, thanks!

I've done that years ago for my bank account. When I was young I used to be overdrafted to the max on my account, and when my salary came I had a bit less than half of it left. not to mention, 16% a year didn't make me happy either.

Fun thing is that aside from a non-overdrafting account, I do have a creditcard. Many bankemployees get confused then they look at my accountdata ;)

This is a simple error, like it happens with many services, no need to freak out. Just contact Cryptic support and they will sort it out.

Yeah, I haven't really had a problem with overdrafting, even with money as tight as it is now (I think only once before this a couple years ago).  But, this will make sure it doesn't happen again.  The overdraft fee amounts are just insane at my bank ($35 per overdraft and $8 per day the account is left in the negative). Not worth the protection imo.

Regarding the overdraft, wasn't there a new bill that went into effect recently that prevents them from over drafting stupidly large fees like that? I forget the details, but I know there were all sorts of caps and notices that were put into place to prevent the "You overdrafted 5cents, so we're charing you a $35 overdraft with a $50 processing fee" bullshit that was going on.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Maybe you could spent that time in a library or just take some courses to work on your education...or just take a some shitty job and work your way up...Just a few suggestions.

A library?  I read all the time, but I don't spend all my time doing it.  I got a game for Christmas with 30 days free time so I played the damn thing.   Jesus people, you act like I played it 24/7 and just ignored everything else.  I played it in my free time of which I have more than I want being unemployed.

Going back to school is not really an option as I can't get financial aid not to mention the cost of books and supplies (and I already went to college, going back isn't really gonna help to much).  And taking a job making less than what I get on unemployment isn't really an option either unless I wanna work 20 hours a day everyday.  I get just enough on unempoyment to get by, any less and I would be screwed.

This is why when I canceled I also deleted my card information from my account. I've never been personally burned by this tactic before but I've heard too many stories.

I didn't mean it as offense or anything...I was just saying there is always something you can do about your employment, nothing more.

It's worth it to consider putting Internet transactions on a prepaid card. It may cost 3 to 5 dollars more in the end, but the security of not giving out banking information to people you know nothing about is well worth it IMHO.

That's true and is exactly what I do. Wal-Mart prepaid cards cost only $3 to load em, usually put my paychecks onto it anyway. Either way, it'll still pull the monthly recurring fee, prepaid or credit card. So again, either way you should still remove your card info from your game account when you unsub.

    Cut off non-essential services, etc...

In defense of the guy, I would actually call internet access a fairly important service these days, especially when job seeking. Internet access can be really cheap - depending where you live - and many companies recruit via online ads.

You are unemployed, yet here you are on the internet...

Perhaps if you actually took the time to prioritize what you need to survive and what you don't, you would have an easier time scraping by on the taxpayer's dime.

Saying you would be screwed is not true, you just are not willing to go without certain things, even though you cannot rightfully afford them (as clearly evidenced by your own admission).

The ONLY extra a pay for is Internet and its the cheapest plan I could get.  Incase you haven't been keeping with the times, most job searches are online now (not to mention I have to file for my unemployment every week online).  So you tell me, which of my other bills should I cut off so I can take a minimum wage job? water?  car?  Insurance? electricity?  gas?  Phone? Rent?  Because besides those bills, the only bill I have is for my Internet.   Internet I consider a required bill as I still have much I must do on it, even being unemployed.  As to the game, I played a game I got for FREE and played for a month for FREE.
