I will try any art style of mmorpg, as I will with cartoony style of WoW. Its far less about art-style and character style and more about over-al breadth and depth of having mmorpg staples, deep breadth and depth of game-play features, and as a mmorpg purist, not having a stat-enhancing cash-shop that trys to coax players into funding a mediore platform by spending real money on health pots, experience gains, and equipment outside of game-play.
So, yes, I will "try" most, including American, Finland, Swiss, Chinese and German-style and born games.
Striving for Silver Stars since Gold is so effeminate.
Nay. Cant like the art style and cutesy voices. I cant even stand to play single player JRPG's.
That's a bad comparison, because single player JRPG's often come off as a lot "cuter" and anime-ish than their MMO counterparts. Japanese MMO's are often more realistic than cartoonish, although their realism is more beautiful than ugly as it is in western games.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
I can't really stand asian style, even when it isn't cutesy. The over the top animations and special effects are just lame to me and I hate the overly elaborate armor.
Not saying western style is much better, most the time all you get is a bunch of dowdy looking armor and clothing in a sea of brown and gray.
I do love western comic style it would be to see a game with that style, I know there is Champions but I do not think it really captured the style very well.
Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit
While browsing Project Empire (Forsaken World) pics, I realized there's something that would turn me away from any Asian style based MMO even if it's much more polished than WoW, has all fluffy stuff I'm dreaming of, and is 100% free:
The characters style and the in game effects and animations. I just can't stand the style.
It reminds me of Lineage II, I played the beta for about an hour till a player said in global chat: "does all elves runs as if they just had one hour of anal sex?" We had a good laugh and both /quit.
So I'm wondering what's your view on the subject?
Be ready for another onlslaught of Korean MMO's NHN will deliver them non stop ,all looking rather much the same and Game Hi is going nuts with 6 new ones coming out.
There is a bit of a shakeup however from both fronts. If you look at the Projest E:se it has a more of a cross between korea gaming and FF gaming. The music is FF stle, the characters look a bit like FF characters.Of course you will see that long ridiculous spike on the characters shoulder armour, they just can't seem to get away from spikes on everything..
Now if you look to Project E by Game-HI,they are taking a big time NorthAmerican approach to this game.It looks to be a cross between Duke Nukem and Unrealtournament.
However they are still Korean games,so you know it will lack over features, these are F2p games,so they try to whip them out fast. Project se seems to lack graphic quality, seems more like WOW graphics and Project E i think has very limited weapon use,but the sound effects are better than any F2P game.So the bottom line is these F2P Korean developers are whipping out games like they are off a factory control line, but they are SLOWLY creeping towards acceptable standards.
We will probably see the same old static buildings in the background however,no working doors,VERY few moving parts.IMO these modern game engines must be so easy to use with high versatility for these developers to be licensing them, because the over all quality doesn't warrant it.IMO all these games could have been made on a UE1 engine or heck even the Warcraft engine.IDK maybe it is the nicer particle effects and lighting,i just know or see why they needed the CRYTEK 2 or UE3.
Maybe the devs here at MMORPG will do some interviews ith these decent sized Korean developers.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
You guys need to understand that these Asian MMO's were created for the original country they were made in. Whose fault is it really when they get published in NA or any other countries? The game publishers of course. Irritated by those cutesy graphics? Maybe they were meant for kids and you shouldnt have tried it.
Nay - Tried almost every asian mmo published and haven't found one that suits me so I don't expect I ever will. I do however try to keep myself from complaining and let those who enjoy them do just that without me describing what I don't like about them.
I offered my opinion in the TERA forum within a similar thread and ended up getting blasted by some nutter. (Really, based on his stream-of-consciousness posting style and wild ass assumptions, this guy has to be psycho, but I digress)
Basically, what I said there is that the biggest turnoff for me with Asian style games is the overdone sexualization. Now, I'm an adult and pretty open-minded, and I like games with adult themes. The problem with a lot of Asian games is that there's all this implied sexuality, but the delivery is far from what I'd consider "adult". Case in point, any female character wearing a skirt is going to display a panty shot for EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN animation, regardless of whether or not the physics of the move would include an upward draft of the skirt. Every female pose is a Macy's mannequin. Every female is going to have ginormous breasts. Finally, every female with the previously mentioned features will have the face of a 10 year old girl. As for the males... well... they're just as female.
I'm in the camp that likes a good Anime from time to time, but would rather not play an MMO in that style. I'll also echo the sentiments about the cutesy stuff.
What sucks about this is if you look at the quality of the art in Asian games, it's outstanding. I'm talking about the attention to detail and complexity of designs. If Western game artists would give that same dedication towards the art of their games, we'd be in for an aesthetic treat.

I so much agree, we can't deny their products are polished, graphically speaking.
Lotro is really nice but some animations like the elves running ones would need a redo. AoC has good graphics but you can feel it was rushed in the end as there are many poor textures and some unfitting color choices.

I completely agree. I was talking about this exact thing the other day.
Visually both in art assets and animations, the asian developers just seem to trounce the western developers.
On the lotro forums someone made a joke reagarding the walk of female elves and their walk being a bit seductive. Having never seen the walk I thought this odd because their run made them seem like a duck.
So I made a female elf, went in game, figured out how to make them walk and yes, they did have a lot of hip swaying. but the rest of the body was almost entirely still. It didn't seem natural.
The art design for most western games that I've seen seem bland or uninspired. True, Asian games can go over the top or add all that cutsey stuff but I always wondered what they could do if they were asked to tone it down just a tad.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

It reminds me the female SWTOR BH walk animation in the Pax demo, that's exactly what you're saying. She's walking like a model on stage, not a deadly BH at all, merely a top model if not a call girl, and even call girls...
As you're saying I would be eager to see Asian games developers working with western style along the quality of their work. Pretty sure that would be quite something.
