STO $28 Shipped on Amazon -- Fire sale so soon?

EldaerEldaer Member Posts: 21

This made me laugh.

www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Online-Pc/dp/B002673XJA/ref=br_lf_m_1000486651_1_1_ttl

This reeks of a company desperate to empty their physical inventory of this game and maximize their revenues before the whole thing collapses.

Thoughts?

Err, yes. This is where I found STO on sale.

I'm not really talking about the sale, I wouldn't play this game if I were paid. I'm talking about the fire sale.

44% off by March 9. Hah. 36 days? Really?

  • PhryPhry Member LegendaryPosts: 11,004

probably they just overestimated demand and their trying to get rid of their stock....  or something....good luck with that eh

I don't know, I think you're reaching. It's the deal of the day. I've seen several new releases on Amazon's DOD or the side deals.

Well, the combo of the game not selling as good as they hoped and Atari having the game on sale already means they need to lower the price to dump some inventory.

    Alright for you Americans.

On this side of the pond (UK) we have to pay more than you £49.99 (current exchange rate put it at about £38 inc vat, for the DDE version).

Played WOW (5 years), AOC, AO, EQ2,AC2, Horizons, Saga of Ryzom, SWG, CO, STO(Beta),ROM, Allods, and many other F2P titles. Asl been in beta for many of the main titles and played countless SP games. I have been gaming for 15+ years!

$5 or $10 on new releases is promotional. 44% off of the normal retail price 5 weeks into the release is desperate.

i know you all had huge expectations for this game but the truth is this game sucks. i'v only watched some youtube clips and decieded right there not to even try it. it's bad, so yea of course it will be cheap and only gonna get cheaper.

Mark my words, it will not be long before you see CO bundled with STO for $30 or so.

Hadn't thought of that.  But a reasonable possibility as the initial cash influx from box sales and the first subscription month dries up from the mass exodus of players from STO.  What you suggest just might be the next attempt to scrounge for a player-base.

I wonder how many people will purchase before realizing the redundancy of that package deal. I guess it works if you have a significant other also interested in playing.

Amazon does this with literally every item you buy on their website. They just slap together like-products in hopes of increasing impulse purchases.

Sounds like a pretty good deal. If someone was on the fence about buying the game or waiting till it got lower now is the chance.

I assumed as much. However, I deal with people all the time that are new to online gaming and therefore, sometimes don't have the slightest clue as to what they need to get started. Case in point, I just built and sold a custom gaming PC to a gentleman wanting to play WoW in it's current state, that had purchased a copy of BC. He had no idea that he also needed a copy of the original version along with Wrath, until I informed him of such.

Sorry but in a case like this.. Amazon did just what Crip wanted. Well you wont find this kind of deal for WOW.. For a NEW mmo to do this .. its just sad.. they are not doing well at all.

OMG!! I'm so sick of the trolls hating on this game for no good reason! You know! Champions Online had a similar launch, where just weeks afterwards they were offering huge price slashing. And look now! That game is a resounding success and people are still buying it! They can’t even keep it on the shelf at Fry’s, Best Buy or Gamestop!! I mean this has to…

    /interrupted and whispered to...

Really? CO isn’t doing that well? I thought with all those huge discounts and free time around October people were buying it and subbing?

    /more whispers...

… Oh… well… Um… STO is still a great game w/ a great community. It’s deep and has so many things to do. It’s only going to grow from here, and they’ll add free content and never charge us, just like in CO. Because Cryptic never fucks their customers. They have a sense of….

    /even more whispering...

Just the first big content addition? And only b/c people went ape shit? Wait, so $15 a month, plus exclusive items in the shop, plus the box fee… and then pay to round out the game they released to early with to little content?

I retract my original statement. STO, like CO before it, is a fail game, and one month later we’re already seeing the proof. Craptic, (as a corporate entity, and not human individuals) can eat shit and die.

I keep waiting for my local best buy to just hand them out when you walk in the door.  They have 14 collectors editions, about 50 standard editions of sto and about 40 boxes of champions just sitting on the shelves. Doesn't look like any of that has moved at all.

If they bundle sto/co the cryptic forums may just implode from the weight of so many people upset about being stuck with 2 games that suck for the price of one.

LOL so true every word of it.

They might do something smarter though, do like SOE and have a combined subscription for both games, after all, most people can only play one MMO at a time.

I'd buy that bundle for $5.

I think that is the easy and obvious thing to read about it the other is that something is certainly going on in regards to Cryptic/Atari (meaning all is not well in lala land) so I'm unsure if this is one trying to stick it to the other or what, I also have little interaction with other players when I play STO so I have absolutely no sense on wether many people are quitting or not, I know I have not even thought about it yet nor have I really heard anyone say they are quitting (not counting people in mmo forums all they ever do is whine and moan anyway).  So right now it's hard for me to say what I think is going on here.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

A good product sells itself, a bad one you can barely give away.

What was the over/under for seeing STO in the $10 bin, 60 days? Or was it 90?

    On pace, either way.....

The sad part is I'd rather play STO then play "Spreadsheet online/ SpaceScreensaver Online" = EVE  HAHA

STO only has a month of play in it, but EVE online takes a month just to get to a point where you can play 8 )

         * ducks and covers from all the tomatoes being thrown by EVE fanbois!!

gate/wait wait wait/gate /wait wait/ gate/ wait wait wait gate/ wait wait wait  /gate wait wait wait wait wait planet gate/ wait station

  • If you keep an eye on Amazon after any release of a product that they over buy they will do these deals on. I have gotten some amazing deals from Amazon in the past due to their overstocking of products. Hell I got  season 4 or 5 (can't remember it has been a good while) of Sg1 for 8 dollars one time, but doesn't mean I could go out and do it again. Check back tomorrow when the gold box deal is over and see what it is selling at.
