What is it that I am missing?

taramirtaramir Member UncommonPosts: 74

This isnt a flame thread!

So I got the code for the game and 30 days so I downloaded it over night and woke up early the next day to play. I made my character totally looking all punk with a mohawk and stuff, its awesome. The trial was ok, the video at the end of it once you escape was pretty cool. But after that trial it kind of lost me. I got to level 3, which I know is not far at all, but I think its lost me. I can see that it isnt a bad game, Ive played far worse games that have launched within the last year. Im running around and doing quests and gathering all the herbs and stuff that I see but then it kinda hit me. Wheres the fun factor? My impression from it is that Im getting quests to go here and do that and going through the motions but there isnt any fun in it. What am I missing? Does it open up at some point? I know its a sandbox game so it has to at some point. But to me right now it seems like all I can do is quests. The game that I think it most closely resembles is the Saga of Ryzom, another game  that I really wanted to like. Ive been told it is a love it or hate it type game. What do you guys, the fans of FE, love about it? I want to like it, and I can see potential, but I need that fun factor. Like all fans of this genre, I need a good MMO to play, and the recent offerings have been garbage. I dont want FE to be garbage.

What a pointless and obtuse point. He obviously wants people to tell him interesting and fun aspects of the game so he can focus on them more than the things he's discovered he dislikes. Some people react differently and can absorb the opinions of external forces without them being negative.

That's not what he's looking for.  Like me, he's a fan of the Genre.  And Fallen Earth has an awesome setting and story.  However, some people have a tough time getting into it.  He is looking at it from one perspective and is hoping someone can show him the view from a different angle in hopes he can walk another path.

I wish I could help you, myself.  I want to see this game succeed and I'm glad there's lots of people enjoying it.  I couldn't get into it due to poor animations and rigid, stiff movements that didn't feel natural.  (Who swings an Axe in a crescent?)

After giving it some time, I'll probably hop back in and give it another go.  I want to like this game, but it's tough.

That may be the case, but the way he worded it, is wrong. (firstly that whole post was a joke but since you missed it ill help you)

Read his whole post, "i want to like it" which shows what.. he doesnt like it. "tell me what you like about it" He has no idea what he likes in the game and wants ppl to tell him what to like..

He could have said this. (which is what he was meaning)

I don't know why some people love it. Maybe they enjoy walking around looking for stuff to craft? Myself I found it a bit boring and now when we all can do everything it seem a bit pointless to me. Whats the point having AH in this game? I think having 4 characters from start is too much for this game, we can make a PvP, PvE and Crafter. It's like we have our own group and don't need anyone.

They have changed some Mobs, so they are a little bit harder now. Still the animation keeps me away. They do patch, but that bugs and other useless stuff. Well for me it is.

Boss Mob in this game don't drop anything special, you get the same crap like the other Mobs... Ant candy, tomatos etc... that again makes me a bit sad and I think they made the Boss Mobs pointless... why have them? So it takes 1min to kill them and not 1sec like the other Mobs? I just don't get that. They don't want to be like WoW? Well you can be something else... just add something on them to make more FUN to kill!

PvP also seem pointless. But that they will maybe fix in Patch 1.5... but we are still doing 1.3 Patching a, b, c, d and so on. So I think that Patch will come in months... not sure I stay that long paying for just testing the game and report bugs...

The biggest problem for ME with this game is that it don't have any goals or candy to keep me playing.

This is what I think after playing it. I do enjoy some of the missions when it's dark and you run around killing cool looking monsters in a basement or a cave. But thats about it. I only had fun lissen to music and drinking beer...

Do you find it odd that the people who we trust with our lives are called Medics.. And Medic holds the word "Dic" pronounciation?

I got bored pretty quickly.  I just did.  Hey, look kids, it's the Grand Canyon!

Without crazy Cousin Eddie, the place seemed like the International House of Yawnfests.

There is 'stuff to harvest'... so I harvested.

There were NPC's standing around... so I killed them.

I took quests that I could find... and then... got... very... very.... tired... sleepy.... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

What you are missing is that just because I love games like FE and Ryzom doesn't mean you will, or should.  That is why there are so many games to choose from.  Try something more action-based like Global Agenda or STO.

If I listed what I love about Ryzom or FE you would just say "Oh, I did that but it wasn't all that fun".  To each his own.  Just try another game.

    This...

I enjoy the slower pace. I kick back, listen to the news, chat with my wife and explore a really vast an cool world. FE is more of a sandbox/themepark hybrid with the positives and negatives of both style game (I actually wish it were more sandbox, but...)

I enjoy WOW as well, which to me is more of a fast paced "sport" requiring my full attention in Raids and PVP but with very little exploration , discovery and relaxation. Its the whole hurry up and wait syndrome. Fallen Earth is more of a single player , slower paced game- If I want to get up and grab some coffee nobody has to wait on me, if I dont pay full attention to the "game" (and have a conversation with my wife) I am not going to effect others or wipe a raid.

I love the vast world with a real sense of exploration. I love the complex crafting system and honestly, I enjoy the combat as a nice break from hitting patterns of 1231212 or 1921212 depending on what Mob I am up against.

FE is not for everyone and frankly I can understand why some would think it boring- I dont, I actually love it. =P

Sorry to take this question here, but what makes FE crafting so complex? I see many people saying it.

It reminds me of SWG and WoW and AO and... I mean like most MMO's. Complex how?

I think FE is a lot like Eve that has the scenery of Fallout. I think the game will open up more when Clans start warring with each other. The monsters in FE so far in my opinion are just there to pass the time to collect resources to sell. However I am still new to the game, but that is my impression. Once some concrete Clans/Guilds/ETC is made, the real game will unfold. Political back stabbings, war, death and pretty much what gamers love. It’s going to be up to the player base to make it happen. This isn’t a theme park game.

-researching your own books (improved and advanced versions).

-interdependency within professions (to make a sniper rifle you need not only ballistics, you also need to make the scope, for which you need optics, that is a discipline within science) Same with gunpowder. To refine steel you need geology, etc.

-you can deconstruct those items that you can also make, thus getting more raw mats.

-you can make basically everything in the game, very few "über" drops, which leads to

-game is not a dropfest, so crafting actually HAS a point... as top level stuff (advanced improved armor?) can only be made by players, it won't drop and vendors don't sell it.

Just from the top of my head...

What you might have missed was doing the extended tutorial, it would have given you a small lesson in most games basics so you would know your way around most things, ranging from crafting to where many things are situated.

Just going in doing things can be fun for some, but without a proper introduction to the games basics which are explained with the extended tutorial, many can become somewhat lost in the world.

If this could mean knowing the basics can provide more fun, sure it can but obvious it doesn't have to be, it's mostly how YOU want to play and what YOU want to do, if that aint fun to you then perhaps the game might not be the right game for you, you can set your own goals, these might be getting into crafting, perhaps you more the explorer type, perhaps take your time and enjoy many very well written missions, there is just to many things to name, most you really need to find out yourself, which for me is the fun part, the total freedom to do what ever you feel like.

  • SEANMCADSEANMCAD Member EpicPosts: 16,775

Although I havent started playing yet the game looks perfect for my style of gaming.

What you are missing is an intrest in exploration for the sake of exploration. It seems to me people are hardwired either way. They are either extreemly drawn to exploration or they are not and it does supercede logic.

Basically, if you do not find it fun to explore around, run into NPC, do some random quest they give you. Maybe leave the area for some other area, check out how crafting might work with no real major goal in mind then I think this game would not work for you.

OP- you are hitting the same wall that I did at about the same time. Getting into the "swing of things" is a little different than most MMOs. This is very much Like Ryzom and Fallout3 had a baby. The game requires patience. There's a lot of travelling to be done. There aren't enough Easter Eggs to be had, but that is fixable. Once you get to Embry  the game picks up. Once you get to Oilville, it gets pretty fun. After that, its Kingman where there is lots of combat to be had. Also, make your first toon a ranged crafter- they do lots of damage (can't take a hit for shit, though) and can make everything in the game, which, will support a combat monster alt.

    A witty saying proves nothing.

Like the OP, I found the game to be missing fun and excitement.  I did the very decent tutorial, got the horse, harvested, explored a landscape made up of every shade of brown and grey, killed some mobs (the mob AI needs a significant improvement) and harvested them.

Next I got a better horse and went to a couple of other towns, but that's when the urge to keep going left me.  FE is a decent game, and I'd recommend anyone giving it a try, but it needs a large injection of "zing" asap.

intresting: I played EQ2 for about 9 months and we all can agree that EQ2 is a 'mainstream' MMO.

Its AI literally did nothing other than move toward target and stand still and shoot/hit whatever its skill was. I am assuming you do not consider that good AI either by MMO standards.

I wonder too what's wrong with the AI? Sure I could imagine a better AI, like in every other MMORPG out there, but how does AI in FE actually differ to the average AI in this genre?

    REALITY CHECK

  • majimaji Member UncommonPosts: 2,091

What personally drives me a lot in the game is the crafting. I always just need 5 points here or there to be able to create a new skill book, allowing me to learn new stuff. Since I didn't spoil the game for me yet, I don't know so far what the new books exactly teach me. :) Each time I log on and finished a new crafting recipe book, it's like a small present to browse through what I exactly learned, see when I can actually craft or use it, what is how good and so on.

And to craft I need materials and also level while doing so and doing the quests and all that. I also enjoy the graphics and the music a lot. And I'd advise you to read the mission descriptions, of which many are well written and interesting (to me).

    Doll effect.

Ragdoll physics. When you kill an enemy for example on some stairs or at a hillside, they slide downwards.

    They don't attack.

    You made that up.

    They slide away.

When there is a slope or stairs.

    Incorrect as well.

They drop loot that is crap.

Let me explain it to you. The loot you find mostly contributes to crafting, allowing you to create your own rewards. It's basically a more complex token system, that doesn't work just for dungeons, but for the whole game. If you expected to find rocket launchers on bunny corpses, same as you find epic gem encrusteded battle armor on the corpse of a cat, you simply play the wrong game.

    They all look the same.

And obviously more trolling, this one doesn't even make sense.

    They die after 1 sec.

If you run around in the first sector while beeing at the maximum level yourself: yes. It depends on the build and equipment and the area you are in. Sometimes the enemies are easy, sometimes you require help even for nongrouping quests.

    They don't have any AI.

Actually intelligence has no enemy in no MMORPG. With AI the people simply mean that the mobs are able to respend to the presence of players. That is true for those in FE.

Most of those are all by far and away the exception, not the rule in my experience, some of them are opinion, and the fact that they don't drop equipment loot is by design.

Fuggo I have to wonder why if you have stopped playing FE and hold it in such low regard you continue to voice your negative opinions about the game? Stop wasting your time with something you dislike and move on to something that you do enjoy... At some point coming back into the FE forums and endlessly voicing your negative opinions about a game you no longer play will be seen as trolling. At the very least right now it's pointless, and borderline. If you are voicing your negative opinions about the game ostensibly to try and see that it is improved then the best way that you can do that is voice them on the official forums and by submitting bug reports. Posting them here over and over again is not going to change anything at all, and is just a waste of time...
