MMORPG for kids.

I'm looking for a MMORPG that is appropriate for an 8 year old. The child is currently playing Toon Town; however, I was wondering if there was anything else I could get him hooked on. The game must be rated E.

Thanks to anyone that can help. :)

hmm, well everything nowadays is blood and gore (which is well and good), so nothing i can really think of except maybe, hello kitty online? shot online (golf mmorpg)? maybe, sims online? im not sure if there is anything else, thats a tough question.

Do you think that ROSE Online might be ok for him? From the screen shots it looks safe and hopefuly it will compare to Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker when it comes to violence. I'm downloading the client right now to check it out for myself. Thanks for the reply. :)

I have 6 and 7 year old daughters and they love toontown. I let them play WoW when it first came out and they didnt play TT anymore. Yes, they actually picked up WoW very easily and didnt need much help from me. After a month or so and I relized how imature the community in WoW was gonna be in chat, I decided to stop them from playing. Now they are back to TT, but ask me if they can play WoW everyday. lol

Anyway, I checked the Hello Kitty Site, from its forums I dont believe I will let them find out about it. Lots of crap in the forums. I to wouldnt mind  letting my girls play a more exciting online game, but at this time there are none out there that have the chat controls and built in protectors of Toontown, so we will stay there, for now.

R.O.S.E. seems like it'd be pretty decent, the only REAL problem in here will be cursing from 1337 players. I like to see kids getting into games and stuff, I'd almost go as far as saying games are almost better than books (not including acedemic) and TV. Games takes contant thinking, deciding, and stuff like that. Good synapse devopment :). Anyway, yeah, I'd say ROSE or Fairyland would be decent.

The ages playing wow is the one part of the reason why the community is immature. However in your case you chose to be proactive in your childrens life and actually take and active role in what they were playing. You sir have my Fullest respect for a parent, I commend you for doing what so very few parents do these days. That is the number one reason why communities like the one in wow and many other games are so deplorable. Parents put their children on games like this without giving anymore thought then its an electronic babysitter that only cost's them $15 a month, and they do not bother to monitor even for a second what their child may be doing/reading/saying online. I have found alot of younger kids who are so vulgar and meanspirited online it is truly amazing, I attribute it to the fact they have not had parents actually teach them about being tactful, or in most cases parents have not taught them anything at all.

Take communities like this one for example, take a quick glance at some of the more vulgar and nastier post's. Most of the one's who post such stuff are usually under the age of 15. Normally I would say If their parents saw it, they would recieve the beating of a lifetime, unfortunatlly I have come to the conclusion after over 10 years of observing it, that the parents simply do not care. Best example I can give of how much of a joke most parents in america are..Jerry Springer.

Thank you, for taking an Active role in your children's life. We truly need more parents like yourself.

hehe i recommend WoW since it was was specifically designed for the 6-10 year old. Or those with a similar level of intellectual development as the average 7 year old.

Cheap shot i know - but i couldn't resist plus its all true!! image

No one has mensioned Second Life yet. I think that would be a decent game for them, maybe a little complex, but it is like a 3d building blocks game. The community are all totaly mature, i almost got introuble once for shooting somone (doesnt do anything other than pixels hitting eachother so i said what the hell) and cussing. Yeah i got reported for saying shizzle without the izzle and shooting somone like twice then leaving. heh, good group of people though.

They only problem i see with that is the fact that i've heard stories from that game... of a more mature nature... I think theres a lot of that going on in second life. I dont know, cant be sure though.

Yea, the problem with finding a MMORPG for a 6/7/8 year old or something along those lines is to find one without blood and gore, and a community that is really appropriate for them. The Sims Online I guess might be suitable, but from what I've heard, the game was really less than stellar to be nice, so perhaps you shouldn't get your child into that.

I would definitely not reccommend ROSE online, Maple Story, MU Online, or any MMORPG's that are currently in open beta testing, simply because like the above posters said, the community iis very trashy and disrespectful. It definitely is not the example you want your child to grow up with. Fortunately I was blessed with parents who taught me right from wrong, so I strayed away from that "dark side" of the community. You will definitely hear curse words, or people trying to bypass the filter in games like those.

There are a lot of games that do not have the violence and Gore like you don't want in your child's life, for instance, Ragnarok Online. But really, unlike Toon Town, which was really a benefit to the younger child, most other MMORPGs are geared to the older player, and thus we will see blood and gore alot.

Ragnarok Online isn't that bad of a choice I'd say, there is definitely no blood in the game, of course you are going to be killing monsters, so I don't think you mind it seems. The community, well, it may not be the best one out there, but there is a chat filter, so that will be a bonus, and the majority of the people there will not try to break it. However, there will be those people who are gloaty and disrespectful at times, but you really can't avoid those, you'll see them all the time. Downside to the game is really the only thing you do in this game is Level up, with some PvP at the end of the line when you are in the later levels. There is a pretty big leveling treadmill, so I don't think that may be something you want for your child, to start get addicted to games. You can decide for yourself though. It's $12 monthly I believe, with a 15 day risk free trial, no credit card needed (I believe MMORPG.com is still having the exclusive offer of a 30 day risk free trial, so maybe you can give it a try and see what you think of it).

Go there man! Its Disney Toon town ONLINE! Thats the best mmorpg for a little kid, you still have to pay a monthly fee for it.

It's not out yet and will only work if you have girls.  Hello Kitty Online.  It's in the game list.

    8 year old, eh.

I'd either stick with Toontown or look into:
    Rose Online
    Maple Story

I'd give the kid a couple more years to play anything else more complicated and like everyone else said, more violence related.

alot of the mmo's that are out contain quite a few of those ... lets say potty mouths...
so get your kids a game with a chat filter on it and hopefully they will be decent teenagers

-- but we're talking about an eight year old mate. He wont be thinking that woah this game is one stupid game; geez these graphics are terrible. Hes eight! I think the father is just trying to find a decent game that he'll be okay with, having a nice community. Sure, it might have bad graphics to us, but will an 8 year old say this? He'll enjoy it. how many good MMORPGs are there for children of this sort of age?

edit -- how is s/he enjoying Toontown anyways?

I believe you are supposed to be 18+ to even play Second Life. It is geared towards adults.

Personally my view is, you get your kids hooked on a game geared towards kids, then you have the whole issue of having all sort of sick freaks in that game for that exact reason.

Just put on the chat filter, put him on a real MMORPG, and keep an inquisition persay on the kids gaming life, asking not so obviously inquisitive things such as, "Been having fun playing (fill in blank here" "Meet any interesting people." "make any new friends", etc.

"Fear not death; for the sooner we die, the longer shall we be immortal."

Kinda, most "mainland" area's are "Rated PG" IE nothing... that bad. Althought there are some islands not connected that are Mature (18+).

Well I unfortunatly still have my Wow acount activated. Not for me though since I have no use for it. Its for my 9 almost 10 year old daughter. The game has no gore effect and if you can stay away from the night elves dancing then the sexual content is minimal too.
Wow I believe caters to the kids since theres almost no character development(cant considers talents character development). Its really hard to screw up your toon in that game.
Explain to your kids in detail what everything does and they will do fine. Make sure they dont go spending spree withthere gear and it will be good for them to try out.

Fairyland is a good game for kids, especially since it goes p2p in a week. Most of the immature people will be gone, and it's not violent at all.

Just curious as to why you would want to get your kid hooked on a game? I mean don't get me wrong these games are educational, require many thought processes etc but I would say everything in moderation. These games are incredibly good in moderation, but incredibly dangerous if in the wrong hands. Imagine allowing your young kid to drink alcohol on a regular basis for example, they aint mature enough to know when to stop therefore they turn into an alcoholic. I don't mean don't let your kids play these games, and I am not saying anything against anyone in here of course, but my advice to anyone is just be careful - limit your kids to a certain amount of time per day otherwise there is an extreme danger of addiction which believe me, you do not want.
