Very helpful and informative bunch. They helped me pick out a PSU and GPU over the holidays and everything works great.

    video card- 260 gtx
    1 sata 7200 HD
    4 gig ram (2 sticks)
    1 ide dvd/cd burner
    asus pq5l board

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371007      Even though the top one has more wats it not the best name i dont think so im leaning towards the earthwats. So which of these 2 would u suggest. TY

    cpu- e8400 c2d 3.0 ghz

    E8400 is 65 W

    65/12=5,42A

    video card- 260 gtx

    Maximum Graphics Card Power (W) 182 W

    182/12=15,2A

    1 sata 7200 HD

    Read/Write 6.80 Watts

    6,8/12=0,6A

    1 ide dvd/cd burner

    Around 15-18W

    18/12=1,5A

    Total 12V= 23A

Pick something that will give you 30A on one 12v rail and you are good to go.

Even basic psu fulfills that. Single 12V rail isn't a necessity.

This is 100% true. CWT and seasonic make some good psus. And the corsairs are  cheaper. (On most sites, retail)

Yeah, from my view in most cases a basic PSU is enough.

I just pout single rail there as it makes alot, well, things easier. As one can end up with lets say 3 rails with 10A and that could be on the edge (sorry for exegerating to make my point with 3 rails on 10A). Although it depends on how they define multiple rails. That territory is a lttle fuzzy.

nothing says PSU FAIL like the smell of "magic smoke" coming out from a PC's back case lol. I had that happen to me with my 1k watt BFG PSU.

    3.4ghz Phenom II X4 965, 8GB PC12800 DDR3 GSKILL, EVGA 560GTX 2GB OC, 640GB HD SATA II, BFG 1000WATT PSU. MSI NF980-G65 TRI-SLI MOBO.

Also most of the cheap PSU's that die pretty easily use multi-rail as a marketing point or to muddle the numbers up, single rail is very uncommon on cheap PSU's so going single rail is a decent way to steer toward quality.

I've had this one for just under 2 years now, runs fine.

Seriously, even half of that wattage would be overkill. I'll rather choose some decent know brand quality product than put up lottery by buying something like that.
