I’m addicted to this game. I spent my entire Sunday skilling up my toon. The fun part was it has not turned into a grind yet. And I still have noobe protection on. In 6 hours, once the protection wears off, I am going to get killed.
This game is a fantasy version of Eve. Eve is the only other MMORPG I have played over the years, left, come back and continued to play. Other then EQ. I have played WOW, EQ2, CoH, AoC, Auto Assault, DDO, PoB, Guild Wars, WAR and others. This is one of the better games I have gotten to play. I spent the least amount of time in WOW. If you love WOW you might really hate DF.
Its harsh environment is already apparent. The community is amazingly helpful (the more enjoyment they will get when they eat you). The PvE is a breath of fresh air (mobs that think). Learning to use a bow was a challenge but damn its fun. Having a Troll toss a spell over your head and hearing it wizz by keeps you on your toes. Understanding that I have to watch out for other players is nerve racking. Walking through the landscape can be downright creeeeepy.
Hats off to the devs. I think (hope) they have a grand vision for this game. Big patch (patches?) this year with promises. I just hope I remember to eat, leave the computer and talk with my wife.
I might change my mind but I sort of doubt it. There is something about this game that speaks artistry. It’s a pvp competition extraordinaire.
If you’re tempted check out the $1 trial. Worth the price of admission.

agree 100%
you should eventually also join NEW. i only joined it after a month but i am having a very nice time. Its nice to live and breath in your own big town and always having clanners around that sound the alarm and rush to defense when a pker entered the city again. Pk''ers can launch over walls, so into the city, with the launch spell. So yeah even in your own city you have to be careful hehehe.
On the european server NEW organizes alot of fun grouping and duels and contests with reward and have been hunting the kraken the last couple days which is also a very unique experience not to mention totally thrilling in a beautiful scenery in the open sea.
I applied last night to NEW. I have not logged intoday though. I am tryhing to do somework which I did not do this weekend. But based on what you wrote, sounds I will love it. TY
You really shouldn't do reviews of the game until a bit further in. You don't have any idea about the grind or the game mechanics until a month or two in.
I'm glad you are having a good time though!
No Endgame. Just pointless ganking and sieges.
This is why it's called a "n00b review". I for one am totally fine with hearing about a player's initial experiences with the game.
I'll be happy to hear his 2 month review, and 6 month review as well, should he elect to post again.
Why? is that protocol? He's not entitled to post a first impressions review of the game? He didnt say anything about game mechanics or the there not ever being a grind, all he said is there wasn't a grind yet.
He stated that it was a noob review, you would think based on his title one could deduce that it was infact... a noob review. There is nothing wrong with posting his initial impressions.
I wasn't aware there was a protocol for posting a noob review.

Seriously. I don't know where some people get off telling others what they can an cannot start a thread on. If it goes against the rules of a site just report it, but there is nothing wrong with posting your first impressions of a game. Personally I enjoy reading them and just take them for what they are worth.
Welcome to the game OP and hope to see a follow up review down the road.
If the OP had given a noob review saying the game sucked, he would have been torn apart on this thread by fanboys saying that he can't possibly know enough to review the game in just a few hours. I have seen this happen many times on this forum. Funny how the same argument is not valid when the post is contrary to the group's opinion.
I was only trying to say that the OP could not possibly know enough about the game while still in his newbie protection period to give an adequate 'review' of the game. He can't even be ganked yet. Very soon he will know the truth about Darkfall... whatever that may be for him. And at that point, I will take his 'noob reviews' more seriously.
i recently tryed darkfall....yeah not bad but some of the game i just can't get my head around like i need a staff to cast magic? thats lame. why can't i just run around with whatever weapon i want expect for bow example would be like any one handed weapon and use magic that but nice. its sometimes the little things it drive people off. i will try again later to play but as of right now i need a break from it only time i had fun with the pvp which was fun.
IN THE FACE!
You have to love the passion in the Darkfall community. I guess it’s like that for other games.
No I have not experienced the ganking, grinding follys of Darkfall yet.
I am not worried about the grind and I expect to get ganked. If either came as a surprise to me then I should not be writing any kind of praise.
The gaming gods know that I am roaming forums reading about game play and mechanics and I can honestly say that DF is intimidating. But its RAW.
My current goal is amass enough resources (regs, weapons, armor and skills) to be viable in the “wilderness”. I have 6 hours left and counting. That might give me enough edge. I looted a mount and r50 gear last night by chance as well. Got lucky - right place at the right time.
As a general point, I never post negative reviews about games on forums. If you don’t have anything good to say, why say it? I just ignore those games and move on (trust me, I could write a book about WOW – I dislike that game but understand why so many people play it).
I do plan on posting a longer, comprehensive review in the future (May). I am published author (www.daniel-tal.com), write blogs and book reviews and I plan on fully reviewing this game.
Bottom line – I like DF and I can already tell I will like it as I get deeper into it. I do think the devs need to make adjustments but after 10 years of development, being a small studio and getting their feet wet after 1 year, they have momentum to keep this game going. They are dealing with a harsh community with high expectations. Without any other good Sandbox on the market (in terms of hack and slash) DF is filling a role.
Thanks for the voices of support.
I sounded almost exactly like you about 4 months ago.
I would have to agree with you. If they would have made a scathing "noob" review, there would have been a backlash of, "You haven't played long enough to give a review." It's amazing the hypocrisy of some threads.
Agreed! I'm 3 months in and am actually considering getting the 6month deal out right now. The best thing about DFO is that you have to use your imagination and set your own goals..nobody is going to hold your hand and tell you were to go here :-)
My prediction is I'll be playing this game for the long haul. Now to get my computer upgraded to handle the insanely large seiges I've recently been lucky enough to be a part of.
"I play Tera for the gameplay"

I second that.
There is no law requiring someone to play X number of hours (although Tasos did try to mess with that by claiming Eurogamer only played for 3 hours or something). Whether it be 3 or 500 loged hours, that is enough to write ones opinion on those hours played.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

yeah, but Eurogamer didn't try to claim it was a "n00b review", but a review of the entire GAME.
The op here CLEARLY states that it's a review of the n00b experience. he's not claiming to have experienced everything in the game.
I find it sad that someone can't post a thread here without the trolls jumping all over him instantly. Good thing he's a bit more thick skinned than some, otherwise he'd get quite a negative impression of these forums, I think.
LOL - your correct, its not worth taking what others say on forums under the skin.
My main purpose for posting was directed at people like me who might come visit this forum looking to see if its worth trying it out - which it is. Most of the responses (except 2 I think) have been supportive.
DFO deserves to grow as a game. It needs community support.
And a week from now when you are still killing those same trolls without noob protection, its just as thrilling. No honest, it is <_<.

Thats a strawman argument. If Eurogamer changed the title of their review to "noob review", would that suddenly satisfy Tasos and everyone else unhappy with their scoring? I dont think so. The focus here is NOT the wording of the title, but the words themselves. As far as I can remember, the review was accurate with no lies or misinformation. They clearly did not like the game and that was their opinion. All I saw was Tasos attacking their opinion and NOT the review itself.
[Mod Edit]
PSPS: almost forgot, answering your text in red, so, by law, how many hours do they need to log before they are allowed to post a review of an ENTIRE game?

PS: why do you consider anyone posting cricism about something you like a troll? With that logic you are posting something positive for the game, that means you are a fanboi - and thats just as bad as a troll.

It's not a "strawman"...go back to wikipedia and learn the definition of the term.
The eurogamer article was (and this has been WELL established) full of shit. The guy tried to write a review of the game after playing for 3 hours. You cannot review an entire MMORPG on 3 hours play.
IF the review had been entitled "3 hours in Darkfall", things might have been different.
As to your PS, when the SAME people linger in a forum deignated to a game that they don't like (and many have admitted that they don't even play) sweing negativity in every thread, they are OBVIOUSLY trolls.
As to your PPS: I wouldn't review a single player game until I had actually finished it. Although an MMORPG cannot be "finished", the reviewer should at least experience as much of the game as possible, and review only those parts of the game, with an indication of time played.
This is done here by the OP....he lets players know how long he has been playing the game, and reviews only the parts that he has experienced. Eurogamer could learn a thing or two from him.
This sounds oddly familiar to the topic of this thread. Umm... correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe one of the words the OP used was 'review'. According to your most recent response, he cannot 'review' an entire MMORPG on just a few hours of play. Which is exactly what I was saying originally... to which I have received numerous angry responses. If the OP had titled his thread 'my first few hours in Darkfall', I might not have replied. It really comes down to an argument of semantics...
Also, I seriously don't think anyone who takes the time to post on this forum does so because they have no interest in Darkfall. Even though I have problems with some facets of the game and post about them frequently, I can't help but still be drawn to it for other reasons. If I really just hated the game, I wouldn't even bother. I'm sure that is the case with many others here you might call trolls. Those of us with valid criticisms and genuine interest in the game do not deserve the title 'troll' simply because we disagree with your opinions.
Endgame in an MMO....that still makes me laugh....
Agreed! I wish people would quit saying that. I also have an extreme dislike for the words "themepark" and "sandbox". Can we come up with any other silly words or phrases that boil down to misleading generalizations and nothing more?
And OP, I look foward to your opinion of the game about 6 weeks from now.
