Computer freezing without any visible reasons...

LexiteLexite Member UncommonPosts: 165

Hey guys i just recently bough a new computer here are my spec:

I7 920 @2.7ghz (8cpu total)

16 gig DDR3 ram

nvidia gtx260

window 7 premium 64 bit

My problem: Well my computer is completely freezing for absolutely no reason, i got a couple of game on it and i just bough it so no virus and all that. What could be the reason of this hard freezing?

my internet is freezing from time to time. Today when i was browing through mmorpg forums.. everytime i tryed to open a certain post my internet would lock and not respond.. i had to go to tast manager and end the program. Then boom my computer freeze not long after.

anyone know what could it be? i heard it could be that i have to update the bios, but i dont know how to do that at all.. its actually pretty frustrating to buy a new computer and everything is messing up

I7 920 @ 2.7ghz (8 cpu total)
12 gig DDR3 ram
Nvidia Geforce 560 GTX TI
window 7 64bit

my buddy got a new laptop and it would freez we had no idea why, it was not software problem so it was hardware he got a dell and shiped it back to them, they said the hard drive was faulty so might be just some hard ware problems send it back or bring it back for a new one don't let the warrenty if you have one go to wast don't open it up and mess around let them deal with it.

well format and reinstall your windows 7 all ur drivers and what ever else you need to make sure its not a software problem is one of the things i would try, if it's hardware then no chance to fix with out messing your warrenty i am pretty sure none will let you open it and mess around inside

does it remove the warranty to open it up?

wait why 16gigs isn't 16 gigs dual channel and windows 7 only supports 12

  • HarabeckHarabeck Member Posts: 616

Wait, do you really have 16 gigs of ram? That would be absurd. (Also an i7 has 4 cores, but they're each hyperthreaded.)

  • demented669demented669 Member Posts: 402

would have to read the warrenty to make sure what you can and can't do.

better to be safe then sorry later and have a nice  $3000.00paper  weight

Hmmm well i actually messed up my numbers, i have another I7 860 in my other room with 16 gig of ram with window 7.. hmm i dont really understand why you say its impossible to have 16 gig of ram with window 7.

With this one i have 12 exactly yes.

Lexite......... your problem is easily solved but i won't post the solution. Clearly your computer knowledge, software and hardware alike, or extremely limited. You spent the money and it should just "work" right? Of all the internet sites dedicated to solving pc issues you run to mmorpg.com? Does that even make since to you?

Take the initiative and try to research your own problem or better yet; seeing that you have so much money to throw around, call your local house call pc gurus in your area. I'm sure they'll be happy to charge you 200 hundred dollars to fix a problem that you could easily do yourself in less than 5 minutes.

Edit: Okay something constructive........  I suggest you call the technical support line of the company you purchased your pc with or better yet, use the warranty. You say you can't do without your pc atm but you have a solution right in front of you.

( sorry for my english, its not my first language and i know i may sound like a tard or something like this)

About the money, i dont really know what your talking about. And for the answer, ive been searching for 3 hours now on google and forums for answers and i dont really understand how to solve the problem. Like ive said ive called someone and he told me to update my bios, i dont know how to do that at all lol. My computer seem to froze while doing minimal task like browsing through internet, and requiere a power button restart.

oo and the reason i posted here is, even tho there is a lot of douche, i still get pretty good answers from people! :)

This may sound nuts, but if you go in device manager, go to properties for your hard drive, and click on Policies, try, turning off write-caching on the bottom.

Sounds silly, but I have a 150GB WD Raptor hard drive that does NOT support this feature apparently. My comp runs like a dream, but when that was enabled, I had all sorts of issues.

Okay this is what you need to do? You say you have a basic knowledge so i will trust you on this. Try to look for a pattern  and be more specific with your explaination of symptoms. Is it freezing or delaying? Delaying for how long? Do some programs not have a delay at all? Is there a time frame of smooth running vs choppiness?

Have you ran your Spyware/Antivirus scanners? Don't be so naive as to think you couldn't have picked up some spyware. You open the internet right?

You're a gamer right? I take it your install and uninstall alot. Try sweeping your registry and then defragging.

All of this is basic computer maintenance that you should know how to do. It is very simple. Try what's in bold  first and see if it stops the freezing. I've seen spyware do some nasty things. Also try disabling a few of the start up programs.

People are to quick to want to "update your bios". Doesn't sound like that's your problem and before you go flashing your bios into oblivion;.Someone suggested you update all your drivers. That is very sound advice as often times, the stock loaded drivers are out of date.

Too bad you can't open your case. I would recommend you test each stick of RAM to see if one is faulty. Have more than one hard drive? One could be defective. Don't risk ruining your warranty though.

Thanks alot for the feedback, i actually just completed a full virus scan and nothing is detected, i havent uninstall and installed alot of game, most of my game are on steam( i dont have that much game).Ive updated my video cards driver also. i have defrag. I have 1.2 tetra space avaible.

My problem is strange. Last time, before it froze, i couldnt open a video, everytime i loaded a pages(and for some reason it was always the same page freezing) on the internet the browser would froze, then all of a sudden the computer froze. But last time, everything was working properly then BAm frozed again.

it sounds like it definately is hardware based.  if you havent the knowlege to reload windows and all the drivers one there its a little hard to narrow it down to that, but from my experience i would say it is.

I know you said you need your computer but unless you are willing to void your warrantee to tear it apart and play round (which i would NOT suggest unless youre a long term technician) I would just bite the bullet, work with their support, send it off and get a new one.  You said you had another fast computer in another room ... use/share that till it gets replaced.

Its not worth the pain to try to patchfix it for several weeks for the issue just to come back, and have yourself say "i could have gotten it replaced in this time"... get the issue solved now.

You are right, probably something inside the computer. I know how it work and i know how to replace pieces, but i wont risk to open it and lose my 4 years warranty.Maybe the problem was just a bad luck today, but if it continues ill just bring it back to them.

Thanks for all the feed back guys.

Are you using IE8? Have you tried to use Firefox/Chrome?  Also, check your firewall setting, give your local/home network full access.  Also, download a stress testing tool to check your video memory and the card.  Reduce the clock speed of your video card a bit.  What is the brand of your system board? Check to see if there are newer BIOS update for you.  Try them one by one.  If your system is just freeze instead of hard crash/blue screen/reboot.  Then it is most likely caused by systemboard, or video card.  Also, reduce your system memory to 12gig.  Check your chipset drivers too.  Check the Event Viewer for error messages in Admin Tools.  You should find some clue there.

Not the best, but always the first.

With my post and now Rabid's, this is the best advice, for someone like you, in your situation is going to get. Call customer support. Great!!!! You have a warranty, and ship it off tomorrow. 2 week turn-over im guessing. Anything you have going on will still be going on when it returns. At least you have a second computer.

All this is great advice. It would definitely narrow down your problem. Now do as i said and call your customer support. Use that warranty. Lol

There are so many things that could cause random freezes, nobody here is going to be able to reliably diagnose the cause. A failing power supply or overheating  are common causes of such behaviour but there are many other possibilities too.

The best thing is to buy yourself a cheap external hard drive, backup all your important personal data and then send the PC back for checking under warranty. When it's returned, you can easily restore the backup.

  • drbaltazardrbaltazar Member UncommonPosts: 7,856

if you got dvd or cd of your os reinstall might do the trick since often some stuff get corrupted over time and often some stuff arent compatible with window

if you use w7 once reinstalled dont touch it just use microsoft security essential

check speedguide.net for the "netsh"tweak that it if it doesnt work then something is broken in the computer!

Cut your Ram in Half First try running your puter with half the RAM then if it don't freeze then you know you have a bad RAM stick. You have to try all slots to verify its not the board. Easy enough to test just make sure you Run two sticks at a time next to each other. Kind of like wash rinse repeat. It may or may not be the RAM but its a quick easy way to eliminate your problem to the solution.

Another way is to take out your Vid card and just run your puter on its on board Vid this will allow you to see if its your Vid card or not.

Best way to get to the bottom of any puter problems is to simplify your boot up with as little as possible then go from there. Also find a good utility prog that will tell you how fast your fans are running. If your fan is not doing its job for that kind of chip it will freeze up just as well.

Word of advise you use your best judgment remember you are responsible for your computer not us. Our Advise is "As Is"

Or in other words I just put out the wet floor sign.
