Diablo 3 art controversy

ThomasN7ThomasN7 87.18.7.148Member CommonPosts: 6,690

It has been awhile since we rehashed some of this stuff and soon enough we shall be seeing Diablo 3 in action again either at Blizzcon or the WWI Blizzard holds every year. Personally, if I wanted rainbows in my Diablo I would just go play Torchlight. According to the link Blizzard has claimed they have made adjustments from player feedback and they also were looking for a new art director. What do you think ?

i don't care what Blizzard does, Diablo needs a dark and gritty art style for the atmosphere to really have an impact.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I never saw the rainbow thing, only heard about it.

It doesn't necessarily bother me, because a Rainbow is a natural world occurance... so if its used in the right context, then I don't really have a problem with it. Its just Light & Water.......

But I understand why people wouldn't like it.

To me, its like SW:TOR's wretched graphics. Star Wars deserves better, Mass Effect 2 calibur, presentation.

Just like Diablo 3 deserves, hell & brimstone, end of the world, presentation.

Everyone said the same thing about D2 when it came out versus D1, its too colourful, blah blah blah.

Stop whining and just appreciate a well made game. Rainbows. FFS, seriously.

I wasn't really big into the internet or forums back then, but I do remember my own personal opinion between D1 and D2 and I recall thinking that they really did make D2 feel less "scary" in its enviroment and presentation. It was pretty disappointing at the time.

D1 had like little naked bodies impaled on giant spikes through their backsides and up out of their heads. It was brutal looking at the time....

Now. Eh. I expect it to be no where near that level of gritty. I just hope the gameplay is actiony and fun, I don't care as much anymore.

One thing we have to understand though. "Blizzard" is just a name. The team that made Diablo 1, the people behind it, aren't there anymore.

What do you think ? I think if Blizzard did something original the Earth would stop spinning on its Axis. I'm sure Diablo 3 will be absolutely nothing new done better than it has ever been done before, and it will make a lot of money.

D2 had the gore, chopped up body bits and corpses on sticks. So?

Your last line sums it up for me too. Actiony and fun.

It had the gore, yeah, but it was less common and often really blurry. And it didn't have the nudity that D1 had. In D1 you tell that some seriously nasty stuff went down before those people were ultimately killed.

D2 had like, pools of blood with arms and legs sticking out of it.  There's a difference there, albeit a subtle one.

Diablo 1-2 were so grimdark you couldn't even see the fallen ones in front of your face until they melted it off with a fireball. Light radius hacks are more popular and useful than maphacks. You can pull the atmosphere trump card all you want but i actually like to enjoy the art, not have it covered in grimdark shadows.

Also, this topic is as old as the game itself, are you just now getting around to it? We've moved on, we have other blizzard games to complain about.

  • xFanaticxxFanaticx Member Posts: 68

I love the new art direction, the old one was great but gets boring fast.  People will whine for now, but when they see it they will love it.  The real controversy is not about the graphics, but rather will anyone care about a relic of a game that D3, or SC2 for that matter, will be by the time they are released, if D3 ever does release.

Really gotta disagree here, having played through both games I found D2 just as gory if not more. You remember the Harem level in D2, very brutal.

I do remember the Harem specifically, yeah.  To me,  it had no where near the level of brutality that the first game had. D1 had... what, 3 levels down there was the Butcher's room. That room alone felt way more disgusting and brutal than anything in D2. The harem had people dead, half hidden beneath pillows, but that just wasn't as nasty to me.

    But, thats just me.

I really dont see what people are complaining about.. D3 just offers a color palette that has more than just gray , dark gray , black and red. It isnt like the game is Hello Kitty Online now.. D3 just offers more detail , smoother textures and a large variety of colors ( which is realistic ) over the previous games.

This also allows them to create a much larger variety when it comes to gear art and gear has always been ' it ' when it came to the series.

Just today I was reviewing the history behind Duke Nukem Forever --- not that Blizzard would ever do something like that, but the interesting similarity with Blizzard's +10 years-in-the-making sequel is that they are under enormous pressure to blow us away as they once did, but the industry has gone through so many changes in the mean time.   Just as with DNF, Blizzard has the power to keep pushing the game back 'until' it's done, but every time they do they create another layer of expectations in the fans, digging themselves deeper just like 3D Realms delaying DNF.

Does anyone remember Perfect Dark for N64?  Everyone loved Goldeneye in 1997, and we eagerly anticipated PD as its spiritual successor, but when the game finally released in 2000 after multiple delays, despite it technically improving on Goldeneye in every way, the window of opportunity had passed, the world had moved on and the game felt old.   I see all the same signs for Diablo 3, unfortunately, and to a similar but lessor extent for SC2.

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

All of the more colourful areas are completely countered by the fact that the boss shown in the gameplay video bit the barbarian in half, and you could see his intestins being stretched between the lower half of his body and the boss's mouth.

If thats not gritty, I dont know what is.

Perfect example is the God of War series. If God of War 3 was full of color and rainbows they would be outcasted from gaming lol. The Diablo franchise is supposed to be dark, creepy and have some intense moments but yet Blizzard went ahead and did a complete 360 and now we are getting a mini WoW like game on steroids. It just goes to show how Blizzard has been so out of touch with this franchise for over 8+ years and really have no vision of what a Diablo game is supposed to feel like.

Wow. Just wow. Its like reading the fututre. Blizzard is out of touch? Come launch day for SC2 and D3, when both games sell an astronomical amount of copies and Battle.net again explodes with millions of players, you can eat your words wrapped in a shit sandwich.

At the end of things, if you really care so strongly for the mistakes Blizzard is (apparently) making with D3's art direction, feel free not to buy it, and go back to sprouting on about how great Torchlight is.

It is just really sad when people diagree with alot of whats going on with D3 and SC2 the fanboys have to come out of the woodwork and defend Blizzard like they actually invented gaming. You are going to sit here and tell us that Diablo should be full of rainbows ? The God of War fanchise sells astronomically well for its grim and dark art design and diehard fans of Diablo should expect the same treatment. Sure Diablo 3 will have improvement but right now it is looking like a mini WoW. Oh and yes, Torchlight was a very good game which won awards thankyousomuch! :D

Stop going on about the goddamned rainbows. There are no rainbows. There is an expertly used palette of colours though, maybe thats confusing you?

    Way to over-react.

And I guess I am a Blizzard fanboy. I know Blizzard didnt invent gaming, but they consistently bring a quality product to the table.

As for the "grim and dark" art design of GoW, I had the CE pack in my hands today, seems to be quite a few glowy weapons flashing about. Glowy blue is grim and dark?

Glowy weapons are nothing new here. Obviously you are one of those types that whatever Blizzards feeds you you'll eat and have no say in the matter. It is even pointless to debate with you.

I love the new D3 artwork! All of the screenshots and video that I have seen look incredible. I personally like variety in game environments. I personally would not want to slog through several hours of gameplay where everything in the game is a shade of brown or gray.

It doesn't matter anyway. No matter what Blizzard does people will hate them...hating Blizzard is the popular thing to do these days. Everyone loves and supports the little guy..until they find success and become the big guy.

The art controversy has been horribly straw-manned on both sides. It seems to me that the two groups don't even try to talk to each other honestly.

'You want the game to be rainbows and unicorns!'

'You want it to be shades of brown and grey!'

'You want the game to use the WarCraft III engine!'

'You want it to have the system requirements of Crysis!'

Anyway, if I were to pretend anyone should care what I think:

Diablo III's art style is more reminiscent of World of WarCraft's art style than the style that has defined previous Diablo titles. Not because it's 3D and not because the colors are brighter, but because it's being done by the Blizzard Irvine artists: they have a strong demonstrated preference for cuter, more 'quirky' monsters and more anime-esque (or fighting-game-esque) animations than those of Blizzard North, and Diablo III hasn't escaped this. We're just seeing the Blizzard Irvine style as it has come to be defined.

However, I felt the same way about StarCraft II back when it was initially unveiled, yet it has since developed a look distinctly its own, like the genetically-engineered, perfect tube-child of the original (except for the Dark Templar, poor thing). I hope the same occurs with Diablo III. I can't say it has, yet, but I anxiously await it.

I was terribly disappointed the first day they released the D3 Gameplay footage... to me it looks more like a WoW based dungeon crawler than anything Diablo.

I think they are just trying to make it so that their fanbase of WoW will look at d3 and see a resemblance and pick it up.  I dont think they care for the diablo fans that love the gothic medieval look that is diablo. Instead they want the crayon box that exploded called World of Warcraft wrapped in diablo setting.
