I just took a US history class. it's all about the American revolution, and obviously the class constantly refers to Great Britain and the "British Empire", so it just slipped out. lol.

I have no problem if games had global servers if:

Server stabilities! My net is not one of the best (5 MB/s shared between 3 pcs and a laptop) so latency can be a bit of a problem for me.

FORCED (aka gms must monitor chat) English in global or whatever chat apart of guilds that are specified for talking in x language (No english is not my first language I'm from europe, malta)

Nothing makes me more bored then seeing spams of chatting in a language that I can't understand when they should be speaking english specially brazilians no offense but yes you people like talking in your language even if you should talk in engish.

English should be the worldwide language to be used among the world just because you didn't pay attention in school and/or didn't learn anything during playing mmo/single player games doesn't justify it.

Would you like if I talked in maltese? (the language used here) very few people know it and read many silly comment about the upcoming game of splinter cell conviction like people don't know that a place called malta exists or say it is a jungle/invented place lol...

Due to lag issues with server placements I´d go with continental servers. If lag wasn´t an issue sure bring it on Global.

All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.

Hopefully it covered what the Scots thought of that war, you know most were forced into fighting or their families would be thrown off their land and starved to death because the english had lords over it. That happened anyway, whether they died or not for the "great british empire".

just glad they left americans alone, you do realise at the time england could have gathered up their armies returned and wiped you off the earth... but the scots were restless, the english were at war with france and spain. things weren't going their way in africa, china and india...

Not really.  Officially, those four commonwealths are states.  It is a historic term with no actual meaning to differentiate them from the other states.  Puerto Rico is an actual self-governing body that is highly associated with the US and is a commonwealth.

It doesn't matter to me the geographical locations of the servers... if I'm playing a game housed in europe or asia then chances are I know I'm going to get worse latency then people who live there.

If I were to break up servers, I would let it be known that the servers were by location, but also by language moreso then continent.  I don't care who I play with personally.  I don't believe that there are complete continents or countries full of assholes or anything like that like some people do.  I would just want it to be broken up by language moreso that everyone who plays on said server (regardless of how terrible the latency is) would at least be able to understand and speak in a way they can recognize.  Usually european severs seem to be catch alls though. At least for smaller games.

It is funny seeing things discussed in such global proportions when so many people are simply trying to find a server that is active in their timezone, because regardless of where the server sits - much of it comes down to when the people play, not where they play.

That's true. However, I don't think it's valid to say distance has no effect on latency.

Even on Global servers there are time spots when both EU and US players are either sleeping or at work. For example 7 to 8 am (EU time slot) is a very good time for the things you mentioned. I also like to sometime do my own stuff in peace and quiet. My job time rotates during the week so when i start working again morning, by the time i get home its prime time for me. ;p

For now I'll have to say that I prefer continent specific servers for 2 reasons:

1- Latency. It depends how the game is design though... might not be a problem, but in game where you have to claim a mob that has poped .5 secs on some else screen because he's closer to the server sucks.

2 - People of different nations tend to play among themselfs & there's even some that just refuse to play with others for x, y reasons of their own. Nation is just another factor to judge & segregate for that kind of persons which divide & reduce the number of potential interactions on a given server for everyone. There's one in this thread, can you spot him? He accuse some people of being douche, but he's one himself... oh the irony.

mm!its probably like where i live!officially we never signed with canada so on paper we still have the allegience to the queen

!why because canada has been hard at work since it seperated from the queen to force quebec into signing a treaty

!quebec did try to negociate canada response !sign and shut your trap !we never signed 50% want to separate and for our own place

just because some ass politician form the rest of canada didnt want to sit at a table and negociate in truth

everybody think quebec is in canada i got news for you they get along but push come to shove we are still on the queen side(uk)

so its probably the same thing with the state you mentionned usa is probably trying to force the issue like they forced the black like they forced the indian like they forced the iraky like they forced afgany

im sorry to say usa are conqerer nothing else! sell us your ressource for 1 cent we ll give you a spoon of rice

thats one reason japan as started speaking again with china!if if negotiation between china and japan bear fruit dont ever be surprised

if america gets kicked out of japan!the usa make me think of one thing

they are the same as gameguard!too intrusive!

but i still wish for world server!would be way better then localisation!like everything else.the idea need to be polished!

That's a great idea. Now we just need a catchy name for this charity organization to help less fortunate people all over the world drink and play games. A website, tax exempt status so people can write it off on their taxes as a charitable contribution and we're all set.

LOL, I was born and raised in the "Commonwealth of PA" yet have no idea why it was called that nor realized that it was different from a 'State' until you brought it up.  Maybe they taught me that in Civics class but that was more than 35 years ago so perhaps I just forgot. (All those years of hard drinking in college killed too many brain cells and now I'm running out of space)

As for Great Britain, yeah, I'm old and we still called it that a lot back in the day, but then again, we watched a lot of WW2 movies still in the 70's.

And I agree, sort of weird how we count Grover Cleveland twice in our Presidential count. Using that logic, every President who served two or more terms should have been counted mulitple times.

Whoops, got way off topic, better say something like, "Sure glad I get to play along side of Europeans or I'd never learn anything about history or world Geography"

    +2 for World Servers

I don't want to be segregated.  It adds flavor to the (game)world when you can wander past some people and their talking some language to each other you don't understand.  I don't care if i can't understand what they are saying,  i don't want to travel an online world where everyone is the same.  Different cultures - better game.

Only bad thing is general chat systems like WoW has were it could get out of control with 10 different languages going on and giving more food for the trolls to feed off.  UO got it right with just guild/party and local chat i feel.

Maybe it is just SoE being cheap with their tech but the other problem does seem distance (or certain countries) for PvP based games such as Planetside....trying to play against warping Russians and sometimes Chinese players is not very fun.  It's not their fault but it does effect game play bad.

Astoria got it right though with the language part :P  I just started playing WoW again and the LFG tool has shown me that non native English speakers speak better English than half the american kids i've grouped with.

Being from Europe on Europe servers was good for ping and having much more people on when you were, but there was a benefit on the old servers on EQ when everyone was lumped on America servers- that you had more people on at different times. (although that was mainly good only being a student and having so many hours- usually you're with the core crowd otherwise)

  • lynxielynxie Member Posts: 103

I prefer  language / world servers.

I love to play with people all over the world. But I do like to chat in MMORPG's, so I prefer that people talk in English.

I am from the EU (the Netherlands), and  I only speak Dutch and English.

For me it is just as hard to understand German and French people who speak their own language, as it is for NA people.

And when I talk Dutch, German and French people have just as many problems with me as I with them.

That's why I prefer language servers. Then I know the people who come to that server want to speak in English, or at least try to talk in English. I don't care about country, or whatever.

I did have a lot of fun in FFXI with people I couldn't understand, (EU and Asian people), but in the end I do like to chat and understand the other players.

I never had problems with connection on FFXI.

I don't know how you Americans can play on English-only servers and not get bored (although, from what I've experienced 1st hand, there are some REALLY serious literacy problems over there that EU servers seem like a better place when it comes to english fluency and grammar). Seriously, I'd feel so alienated if I didn't occasionally read/hear something written in Russian or Turkish... ya know, players most notorious for typing exclusively in their native language (nothing against them, just from my experience). :D

Continent servers. It is not a matter of with whom I play with, it's a matter of low latency. I want low latency.
