Umm last time i checked people buy products from SALESMEN people that will, lie to your face to make a sale.Peopel aslo buy those million dollar homes for middle men that have nothing to do with products,so peopel are basically tossing money out the window, paying 1000 bucks for a TV that would sell from the manufacturer for about 150 bucks. So no we don't buy fom peopel that know anything other than how to rip us off. When's the last time anyone walked int oa store and the salesmen said ,don't buy anything here it is all crap lol.
I also need to remind people here that EPIC failed badly out of the gate on their networking structure for Unreal/UT the yhad to make steady updates for several months to get pings from horrible standards to playable.
One further point,NOBODY is expected to know the game engine, this is why SUPPORT is part of the licensing agreeement. This is a famous lawsuit that Silicon Knights took agaisnt Epic and the UE3 engine.
Isn't it odd that they filed that lawsuit in 2007, right after their lead designer defected to Microsoft?
I guess that has nothing to do with it.
Oddly enough, at the same time SK filed the suit saying that the engine wasn't what Epic had presented, NCSoft said it was a great engine and they were going to adopt it.
By the way, SK didn't allege that the network code wasn't up to par, but rather that Epic misrepresented what the UE3 could actually do. Which wasn't the case when NCSoft started to develop using it, and if you look at the list of titles that launched in 2007-2008 (timeline of SK's lawsuit) all those developers had NO problem making their games. The current joke is that SK is the equivalent of SCO -- if you get that joke, then you have some nerd in you. Otherwise yea... I like your defense of SV against Epic who has proven time and time again their products, and shown hundreds of releases with the current version of the engine.
Version 1.0 of ANYTHING is very likely not working 100%.
They have apparently ALSO updated their engine to 3.5xx from 3.5x... same link. So that update is already out of the way if it hasn't been sent out already.
Last, but not least...
Global Agenda has apparently implemented Atlas very successfully...
Global Agenda is also HEAVILY INSTANCED... if not entirely from the vids and descriptions of the game.
*clap*
Should we continue the discussion on this network solution upgrade, flying to the US, and the engine update?
Reading that post from Henrick I believe he is saying that the whole merge (to updated UE engine and Atlas) is either done or will be done by tonight. From this point they are just testing the existing content etc to make sure it works.
If thats the case I guess we will see it rolled out in a few days. Again though... I take all they say with the highest degree of skepticism, but we shall see.

Aye, I read it in a similar fashion. They have to now show what it means that they have "merged" and does it produce anything tangible. Although, it casts an omnious shadow over the entire "we are going to US of A" statement if they were able to actually perform the merge without any outside help. Yet, it is entirely seemly that they went there to actually learn how to improve their content creation process and make it less prone to bugs. That is, if we want to believe that they can actually make this out in the end.
>>Version 1.0 of ANYTHING is very likely not working 100%.
Yet they chose to use it? Shame on them I say.
And Global Agenda apparently...
Hi-Rez had the funds and developers to pursue it. SV has a small team and limited funds and chooses to go for the new technology.
Probably the only reason they chose it was because their devs only have knowledge with Unreal modding.
We won't talk about the knowledge and skill the developers have... that's opinion and not really the focus of this delightful topic.... we'd go around in circles till we started calling each other names. I'm focusing on Atlas, the Engine update, and them flying over here to the US.
Someone had to use the 1.0 version, and it turned out to be SV and Hi-Rez.
Due to the heavy amount of instancing Global Agenda has, i'm thinking they didn't run into the same problems Mortal Online is having with Atlas... but we will never know for certain.
It's good to see the software is getting updated and SV will hopefully benefit from it... and other MMOs in the future.

I think it goes more to the idea of "We are an indy team" -- Hi-Rez realized that they were an indy developer and designed their game around their own limitations. They are having stellar success and an extremely stable game. It's instanced, and I agree that in and of itself probably poses a technical challenge less than what MO is trying.
But Hi-Rez has some experienced devs on board and they chose that option, even though many people wanted GA to be the next Planetside. They built the game they knew they could make well, and succeeded. SV tried to build a game they had no idea how to build, and had no experience to support that build. The experience part is a *fact* -- none of the developers on the team, none of the management has ever launched a software product that rivals Calculator yet, and their first project was an uber ambitious MMO, that has no underlying design to pin it all together.
Again -- if you folks think it's going to all be solved after they visit Epic... you're in for a rude awakening.

I'm certainly happy a person or group set a goal, within the area they believed they could be successful, and is achieving it.
I have nothing against a company that does that, nor would I ever try to stop them or belittle them for doing it.
It just does me no good.
Star Vault is trying something else though. Something I want. If the company can stay alive, I'll have something that is very close to the game that I want. I support them because, as far as I've been able to tell, no one else is going to get me what I want.
If they fail... it's not like I, or the gaming industry as a whole is any worse off... I actually have a better understanding of the type of MMO I want... and whatever new ideas, techniques, lore, or even bugs/problems SV uncovers during this endeavor... someone is going to benefit from it. Even if it turns out that someone is Activision or EA somewhere down the line 10-20 years from now when they introduce a groundbreaking Sandbox MMO.
I'd just rather it be Star Vault here and now... regardless of their pedigree, or how well they can code solitare in java.
Everyone in the world is ignorant or incapable of doing certain tasks at a variety of levels, and I find it amazing how society takes pride in how well we can hide it from everyone else.
What's the worst that can happen? You screw up... you stumble around, bumping into a variety of things and try to juggle a variety of problems and issues... and then you try to fix it.
You learn something... and hey, you might actually push out something worthwhile.
Go back through Blizzard's patch notes from 1.0... or even Warhammer's,Vanguard, or even possibly Everquest. You'll find a few that talk about "We think we have fixed this problem..." or "Resists should no longer be allowed to go into the negatives, resulting in massive critical damage from our damage equations."
Developers... people.... fuck up. They learn from it and make it better.
If people were not so scared about others finding out about their messups, or trying to distract each other by pointing at someone else... we might actually have the MMORPGs we want... and maybe people would actually try to be daring for once in their lives.

If you have high standards, then developers have to live up to them or they won't earn your money.

I don't doubt your statement, but your standards are not my standards.
I'm thinking of Benjamin Franklin flying the kite with the key on it, or the Wright brothers and their attempts at flight. Heck, even the current developments in sub-orbital space flight... strap a rocket between your legs and go for a ride.
Sure... Ben and The Brothers didn't have to worry about a lawsuit if children were too close... or if the seatbelt wasn't the right specification... so maybe the current sub-orbit stuff is facing a different crowd and challenges...
But... eventually someone has just got to go and do it... regardless of whether it meets standards, safety requirements, or approval of the public.
I'm tired of waiting... and so I'll put my support in places I see might be worth it. Even if the only people willing to step up are considered "UT3 modders."

Yes because what SV is attempting is just so revolutionary that it should be compared to discovering electricity or flight.... yeah.. OOOOOOOOKAYYYYY.
On the flip side I will NEVER say that someone can't enjoy anything they like. Different strokes for different folks and you are 100% allowed to love Mortal just like some people are really into self flagellation. Let's leave good ol' Ben, Wil and Orville out of it though as they actually, ya know, changed the world...

I won't go into the lack of meaningful content, since it appears there are some people out there happy to pay large sums of money for what is essentially emptiness, and so that particular criticism comes under "personal taste". Similarly, it also appears as though there are those who believe it is ok for a professional dev team to release untested content full of bugs during the final development phase when they should be polishing the existing content ready for launch. Again, I'll write that off as "personal opinion" even though I think it's more like common sense.
However, is it really that unrealistic, capricious or hypocritical to expect a game to run smoothly and at least work? Mortal Online is the first game I've ever tried that took days to install, was laggy and largely unplayable when I did get into the game, and now won't even load due to Nowgame.exe (suspected corruption from patcher?). Not to mention that it chugs and hitches on my top-end PC despite using an engine famous for its excellent performance. I am far from being the only one either; I think it's pretty much general consensus that Mortal Online is unplayable in one way or another for the majority of people whether it's through lag or crashes.
Thus would I be correct in presuming that since you criticise HerculesSAS for giving negative feedback on Mortal Online due to these issues, that must mean you deem it acceptable under certain circumstances for Starvault to charge premium prices for a product that doesn't even work for a large number of their customers? Forget the stuff I mentioned in the first paragraph, but for crying out loud you MUST agree that a game that charges top dollar should at the very least be stable and smooth for the majority of customers? Crappy gameplay and lack of content can be written off as mere personal opinion, but I'd expect functionality to be a universal truth.
Here's the deal for MO, either you like it, or you don't. It's been in free beta for awhile so everyone who was interested got the chance to try it out, great. Now if you liked it, as I did, but recognize there are many issues and its NOT ready for release, then you can be pretty happy that they have delayed it, Now I buy what Henrik is saying, he has no real reason to lie to us, if they release the game in a month and desync still exist, then I'm done, I will move on, it's not really a huge deal to me. All we can do is wait at this point and see if things get better, I simply don't understand what your trying to get at via the OP. If you did not like the game during the free trial then move on, it's real simple.
It most definitly wasn't ready for release, I'm glad they delayed it, hopefully its fixed, time will tell.
Besides the fact that hes the CEO of the company and is trying to make his game successful, his time and energy and personal assests are at stake, and that players are losing faith in SV to be able to pull this off.
I think I've mentioned this before, but..... If someone makes a projection (even if it turns out to be unrealistic) and tells you what that projection is , that is not lying. It may be evidence that they don't adequately understand the complexity of the task ahead, it may be evidence that they are overestimating their ability, but it is not evidence that they are liars. Project delays are fairly common in MMORPGs. I repeat, Project delays are fairly common in MMORPGs.
I agree with the second half of your statement but once again feel the need to clarify that there is a difference between a Statement (We are very happy to announce that Mortal Online will launch in March 2010) and a Projection (We hope to launch Mortal Online in March 2010 if such and such happens). They made a statement, not a projection. Such a statement carries much weight when it is made on March 13th....
Even this is fine though... as shit happens. What I find more troublesome is the fact that they realized they would not be launching in March but did not update their customers until the last possible minute. This is evidenced by the fact that their delay statement said they had been working on the migration for awhile, also evidence by the statement a few days ago that they had already finished the migration and were now just checking content to make sure nothing broke.
Bottom line though is that it doesn't really matter if I think they lied, mislead, or are the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'm not someone considering a purchase or subscription. Eventually MO will in fact launch, and at that time the market will vote with their money and SV will either reap the glory of their choices or be left to drown.

Ok... so a recap and maybe something to help get back on track:
SV is coming to the US, because Support and possibly training for Atlas is HERE for most of western civilization.
SV is/will need to update their version of Atlas from 1.0 to 1.21.

I'm not sure I understand the point of this post?
It most definitly wasn't ready for release, I'm glad they delayed it, hopefully its fixed, time will tell.
>>he has no real reason to lie to us
Besides the fact that hes the CEO of the company and is trying to make his game successful, his time and energy and personal assests are at stake, and that players are losing faith in SV to be able to pull this off.
Sure, he has no real reason to lie -_-
He who keeps his cool best wins.

You need to learn what a projection is because this is a statement.
