I think there was quite some contrast between the colorless hills and town and the extremely green grass and blue water. I think they'll keep adjusting it to find a good middleground.

Definitely. The grass in one part of the video was great. The water in another was great. Most of the video, however, focused on one specific setting which is what I was commenting on obviously and I'm glad at least one person caught on to this, Hyanmen.

I didn't think people were so narrow sighted that I had to specify "This post is about 99% of the video, not that other 1%. And since the video only showed one part of the world this post is only about what is actually shown, not artistic screenshots or glimpses of other content shown in other media besides this video". Too bad the majority of forum posters rabidly defend "their" games and make astounding conclusions about what other posters put in PART of their post. I forget sometimes how people on forums often times pick one tiny part of a message and blow it out of proportion. Probably why I try not to post too often.. lol.

I especially like the one that insinuates that I don't like the video because I don't like FF games even though I've stated I LOVE the FF series. Maybe that's why I was critical of this video. If I was in charge of marketing FF XIV I would want to release to a large MMORPG community a video that really showed the beauty of the game. Not a couple flashes and then a huge segment of less than stellar content.

And I also think some people are confused by the videos and screenshots they see out there. The ones that look really awesome tend to be scripted CGI, not in-game content. I mean if you've played any recent FF games you must realize how big they are in using some awesome scripted CGI. Many games do a similar tactic which is why I'm a bit wowed that I should even have to point that out. Although if those really are true in-game and not scripted CGI and artistic screenshots that's really awesome. But comparing those awesome ones to this actual in-game footage kind of points to the worse scenario. Unfortunately.

But even though I love FF games, and would really like to see this one become awesome (which oddly enough bringing up possible  faults into the light and things that could be improved is a good strategy on improving something) I should probably keep in mind the common lynch-mob mentality and take the knee-jerk responses with a grain of salt. They love the game and are just defending it thinking it's perfect the way it is even when stating it's just alpha.

I totally agree.  Final Fantasy IV so far looks too drabby for my taste.  Then again I think this drabiness is a continuation of Final Fantasy 11.  That game looked really drab.  Sure it was graphically superior to other games at release, but just the color scheme that they chose for the environments and clothes and armor and creatures, they're like 10 shades of the same color.  I can make this comparison to Metal Gear Solid games, which are full of the color GREEN and BROWN, and also Killzone, which is full of GREY.   I don't know, some artists for certain games just like drabby colors.

This said, I will definitely play FFXIV at launch.  As long as the gameplay is good, I Can stomach some color drabiness.

I really, really hope so. One of the reasons I hated FFXI was because of the dull world and design. It was so different from other FF tittles and don't give us the wow - alike crap because fantasy and colourfull world is not wow's monopolly. FF series were well known for their beautiful design and colourful landscape. Look at the latest, FFXIII may lack in some gameplay parts but does shine in design and colourful world settings. FFXI was such a big let down for me. It didn't look like a FF at all. I really hope FFIV will not be the same.

They've been mostly focusing on Limsa Lominsa (which sounds like a Taru name...) area for their publicity stuff. I think they're wanting to keep the rest of it a surprise for now.

I notice that the general theme SE has gone with for FFXI and now FFXIV was very "normal" "earthy" looking areas... outside of the flora and fauna, some of the areas you can almost imagine existing on Earth as well. Gives a very strong sense of "place" to the world, rather than feeling like a series of props. It also serves another purpose, at least for now in FFXI, in that later areas that truly are outlandish - such as Sky, Sea, Promyvion (which is actually more "bleak" and "weird"), etc - seem all the more in contrast to the normal areas. They're much more vibrant, more colorful... or at least very "out of the ordinary".

For example... When you're used to areas like this:

    Or this...

    Or this...

... which are all fairly "down to earth" looking overall...

    It makes areas like this...

    ... and this..

    ... and this ...

... seem all the more outlandish.

There are areas along the way that sort of punctuate the game... but for the most part , any area you spend a lot of time in throughout the game is going to look fairly "normal" and unspectacular (however nice the envrionment design is).

So... in my opinion - and this is my guess only - SE keeps those earlier areas looking very unremarkable to give the world both a feeling of place, and to really give the player the feeling that "they're not in Kansas anymore" when they do enter some new, strange area. If every area, or many areas looked fantastical and outlandish, then the impression wouldn't be as strong upon entering an area that truly *is* supposed to be that way. It sets a nice contrast.

I think they might well be taking the same approach with FFXIV.... and I, for one, hope they do.

WSIMike speaks truth.  We'll definitely see some more SE fantasy style areas soon enough.

I don't think the colours are going to change despte this being (pre-) alpha footage. The style is similar to XI and I expect they're trying to emulate it.

Having said that though I really like it. The colours are natural and reflect equivalent eras in the real world. Clothing would either not be dyed at all or would be dyed using natural, easily available materials (such as onion skins for a tan/orangeish colour). Bright, vibrant colours would be expensive and uncommon. XIV is just going for a realistic colour scheme that makes sense given the sort of semi-medieval civilization they have.

As you get further into the game (assuming they follow the same pattern as XI) the colours will become distinctly more alien as well. Look up the final battle against Promathia in XI because that one is a very colourful battle (and one of the most epic fights I've ever seen in an MMO).

EDIT: Here's a link to the Promathia fight if you're interested. Assuming XIV follows the same colour schemes of XI we can expect to see something like this later on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKSxSe6wS28&feature=related
