Everquest has to be number one due to the number of years I played it. If the question was "which games I enjoy playing today", then remove Everquest, DDO, AO, Dark Age of Camelot and Earth and Beyond (obviously).
The problem with MMO fansites is the people that write for them almost never play the games they write about except in the most casual of casual terms. Generally these people have no clue about the MMO's they write about as they never get past lvl 20 in any game. Which normally explains why most all reviews, MMO guides ,etc are always on the low end and lack any subtsance whatsoever. MMORPG.com is a little better than sites like Ten Ton Hammer but not a whole lot better.
That being said thats close to the absolute worst list I could imagine.
The problem with most fansite members is that they are far to eager to pop off at the mouth and try to make some biting negative comment about an article that they have only read the title and the list of instead of reading the whole thing and comprehending what was written and the whole situation. This is a personal top 10 list of the OP. It's not an official site list nor a list trying to influence you to "come over to its dark side". If anything it is an attempt to spark conversation about our own personal top 10 lists.
But of course, the aforementioned don't have the stones to post their own lists from fear that they too be judged I suppose.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
I am not sure that I could come up with a top ten. The number of games I have started from launch and dropped two months after would probably be a longer list. So here it is, the top games I started and dropped like a hot potato because they bored me to tears.
6. EQ2 - Meh, such an utterly average MMO. Sequals are never as good as the original I guess (except for Empire Strikes Back of course)
5. Warhammer - Why? Why did you make this suck? Why? You made DAoC? How could you do this?
4, Star trek online - Oh good, I get to play in the same PvP zone... at every level.... forever.
3. Age of Conan - Meh.... I tried to love it, but the bad launch, instanced zones, and total blah factor beat me down.
2. Vanguard - This is what happens when you fly to close to the sun. You fall from grace in a burning pile of flesh.
1. Aion - What a complete waste of a really good concept. Korean grindfest with shitty PvP for the lose.

Ok first I was coming in to ask if anyone else puked a little bit when Champions Online made the list but since I like to have stones, here's my list, past and present, in no particular order:
UO, pre tram of course
EQ, yes even now
DAoC, maybe not now but to leave this off any top ten P2P MMO list is just plain wrong
Shadowbane, yes I know buggy as hell but a ton of fun before they screwed with the servers
Warhammer, not at launch but enjoyable now
CoH, loved this game, can't get into again but still a worthy mention at least
EQ2, needs some love but not bad
LoTRO, for you PvE types, not a bad game just miss real PvP when I played it
AC, almost forgot that one, the only game to make me love and hate reagents at the same time
and yup WoW, I love it I hate it but I am drawn occasionally
Honorable mention to SWG, at launch , AC2, yeah I liked that game and Planetside, the worst shooter ever made (if the bullets don't travel to the reticle why have a reticle) but enjoyable during the first year. Now can I have my stones please?
Played in some form: UO til tram, AC, EQ, AO, WW2O, PS, SB, CoH, AC2, Hor, LoTRO, DDO, AoC, Aion, CO, STO Playing: WoW (for gf), WAR Waiting For: SWTOR, FFXVI Hoping For: DCUO, Secret World, Earthrise -S- (UO Sonoma)
I'm not surprised that World of Warcraft is in 1st place but did the author actually list Champions Online, Age of Conan and Warhammer Online higher than Ultima Online?
I mean, seriously? Ultima Online in the 8th place and Champions Online in 5th?! Freaking for reals?!!!@!!
Not to mention that EVE is not even on that list. Neither is Everquest, Anarchy Online or Dark Ages of Camelot. How about Star Wars Galaxies or Planetside, Aion, Lineage and Lineage II? Final Fantasy Online (I can never remember the number)?!
You know, I've been coming to this site for a while now but if this is the type of garbage your guys are going to continue to release as news, I may as well go to a more reputable site like foxnews.com.

I love the comments. So i guess im with the others that are dumbfounded. I guess that these little pieces are less interesting, but the reality check comments from the community that play the games, or have played the games, are far more interesting to me.
Striving for Silver Stars since Gold is so effeminate.

Take your pick, good sir. And for playing along you also receive one frozen...
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
Horizons/Istaria: the game didn't wow me, but the community was amazing. Also, DRAGONS! And cat people who look like housecats.
Dark Age of Camelot: It wasn't my most favorite game ever, but it was fun and different from EQ.
EverQuest 2: I always have fun, but I can't seem to hit my stride and I rarely stay more than a month or two.
Lineage 2: My guilty pleasure. I don't even know why I liked it so much. I wish more IRL friends would have stuck with it.
World of Warcraft: It's fun. It's well done. It's another drop-in game for me, like EQ2.
Ultima Online: I loved it at the time, but when I tried to go back years later, I felt like it wasn't so great, akshully. (Dear God, please forgive me for that lolcatism. Amen.)
Star Wars Galaxies: You know, before they took a dump on it...
EverQuest: Anything that holds my attention for years and years has something going on. For me. YMMV.
I played a trial of LOTRO and thought I would buy it, but I never did. I played the WAR trial and thought it had a lot going for it, but never actually subscribed. It is getting harder for companies to get my money. I am currently playing WoW on a trial invite from a friend. I might subscribe to that for a while again.
I agree with your picks though I'd probably rearange them a bit. WoW is by far the number 1 when it comes to content. Its the game we all love ot hate or hate to love but in the end everyone goes back to it and with its new expansion EVERYONE will go back if just to try it.
In the end I miss Auto Assault very much as well. I couldn't believe how little time NCsoft gave that game to prove itself. Yes it deffently needed more time in the oven as do most MMOs these days. I can't remember since the launch of EQ2 and WoW (in the same year) hearing people say "that game got plenty of time and it shows," no these days the constant complaint is "they pushed that one out before it was done... and it shows in a realy baaaadddd way."
Its sad that more new titles didn't show up on the list. However you picked some realy good games and I can't argue with WoW on the top. I myself 'am a STO fan lifetime membership and everything (ducks to avoid a barrage of flameage) but I think that game is even underdone... oops I did it again!
I think lists like this really spotlight just how bad the genre is right now when FIVE of the top TEN games first 12-18 months can be summed up as:
Closing over half of their game servers
Losing hundreds of thousands of players (Millions when combined)
Closing down entirely
Even beyond that we have to go back 6-12 years just to fill up empty spots.
I understand these are your personal choices, but in order to fill up 10 spots on a list it really shows how low we as mmo gamers have to set our standards just to be able to name 10 games.
thats because every idiot and WOW fan run these new games forum and shout over and over and over "make it more like WOW, make it more like WoW!!" "do this like WoW do that Like WoW" and then when the developers cater to them they play for the first month and say "eh why should i stay this game is too much like WOW, ill go back to where i have multiple 80 toons ... in WOW".
the Evil Raider that outgears you and makes you cry for welfare epics on the forums.
You can tell this "Bill" that he needs to settle his addiction to item drops and then rethink WoW as his #1. I wholeheartedly disagree with his list and wonder if he didn't make WoW #1 just to dick everyone on the website.
Any list lacking DAOC and EQ (three hundred expansions ago) isn't worth anyone's attention.
I knew when I was asked to write a list of MY OWN top favorite P2P games that we'd be inciting a riot. I have different tastes than most, and some would certainly simply say I have bad taste. But again, that's all opinion. But these are my own favorite P2P games right now. As stated right at the top of the article, this list will change over time no doubt.
But for those who are confused, read the title again... it's "Bill's Top 10 P2P MMOs". If they don't match yours, that's totally fine. Give us your 10 and why they are that way for you, as I've done.
No one in a list that is based on opinion is right or wrong. Try to be objective and realize that this list is just me stating my favorite games and trying to encapsulate in 1-2 paragraphs why they're on there.
And yes, Auto Assault made my list. If it was still running there's a good chance it would be higher. I loved that game and carry no shame in announcing so! *shakes fist at NCsoft*
After having read through all the posts on this thread I considered making a top ten list of ' People who don't understand what an opinion piece is ' & then a top ten list of ' Forum Trolls ' . But that would be rude . I doubt that I could keep the list down to ten in either case .
Comments
My list would be:
10. Anarchy Online
9. Everquest II
8. Dungeons & Dragons Online
7. EVE
6. Earth and Beyond
5. World of Warcraft
4. Dark Age of Camelot
3. Lords of the Rings Online
2. City of Heroes/Villains
1. Everquest

did cryptic and EA compensate you fairly for your credibility suicide?
I sure hope no one else did.

Not including EVE and DAOC you fail badly, and putting WAR in a top 10 list is like putting Battlefield Earth in a top 10 movie list....
well if it's your number one pick than go back to WoW.
Hehe sry had to say it.

Yeah I think this is list is spot on with how i feel about P2P mmos; Most of it at least.

Oldest mmorpg.com member with the least amount of post counts. That counts for something, right?
I really really had to laugh when I saw this catchy phrase of Bill when he put WOW on number one:
"How could I? How dare I put the game that's number one subscription-wise at the top of this list."
It is beginning to look really really funny when an author seeks and hides behind such a sentence on mmorpg.com.
Of course it is the number one. The paid votes of monthly subscriptions proves.... he's just saying what every other paying player thinks.
Want a real mmorpg? Play WOW with experience turned off mode and be Pve_Pvp King at any level without a rat race.

i like this article, there are alot of view's on the top ten mmo's.
how about someone collate this info form the op and the replies to get a list and do some sort of poll.
if the poll was not viewable untill complete it would be good so no one could cook the poll as it were.
i'd be interested to see how the votes counted...
