Loved those games and really started me on the whole RPG thing as a kid.
To this day I can think of very few RPGs that were harder than Dragon Warrior. Heck I cant think of many things in general that are harder than Dragon Warrior was.
Star Trail for the PC was THE hardest RPG I have ever played.
And it was the Gold Box D&D games that got me hooked.
I am almost 35. I have been playing PnP RPGS since the D&D Red Box. I play and DM and have been ever since.
My first console was a NES. My favotite games for it were FF1, Dragon Warrior and Faxanidu. I have had many consoles over the years and have played many RPGS.
My first computer was an IBM 386. I loved MIght and Magic and TES Arena.
The best RPG ever wasnt on a console, it was book and dice D & D. like / unlike alot of 39ish gamers, my parents couldnt afford a console, but as a poor kid i ran away with a few D & D volumes from the book store, call me bad but it was 30 yrs ago, and i did what a poor kid could do. when i finnaly had a bit of money i went with C64 and D & D too
Waiting for- Tera, Jumpgate Evo, WH40K, WWE, WOD, TSW -- -- "Hey, if Activision liked it, then they should have put a ring on it," Double Fine President Tim Schafer said. "Oh great, now Beyonce is going to sue me too."
While in another thread today, I started wondering what RPGs the older gamers played that got them into the genre.
What really got me was The Final Fantasy Legend on the original Gameboy in 1990. Id played a few others on the NES, but i still consider The Final Fantasy Legend to be my "first" if you will
The "Gold Box" games on my Commodore 64 and later, my shiny new 386! Curse of the Azure Bonds, Pools of Radiance - anyone remember those?
The first "MMO" I played was that AOL game, "Neverwinter Nights" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_(AOL_game) - No, not the popular one that was just out but the online version that I played in the early 90's before some of the gamers I know now were even born.
And now, I feel really old.
Also - Phantasy Star on the Sega Genesis. That was an amazing game and the story kept me interested.
For me as well. My Samurai was the bomb in Wizardry.
And... by the way... does ANYONE remember using a hex-editor to change the stats of your "Ultima" 1, 2, and 3 characters? I did that on my C64 and recall easily playing the game in God-mode.
Then again, I was one of those geeky kids who did things like examine the hex code for my saved Ultima characters and games...
Loved those games and really started me on the whole RPG thing as a kid.
this was my first RPG as well, and then the original Final Fantasy, and Swords and Serpents, Magic of the Sheherazzad or some such. Oh, nostalgic memories of RPG's of old!
My first RPGs? Hmm.... Lands of Lore, Eye of the Beholder, Might and Magic... and probably Shadowcaster and Heretic as well if you want to coun them as such.
Legend of Zelda, followed by Dragon Warrior, then Final Fantasy 1 on the US nintendo, and then it was off to the races. Sadly DW went down hill and became kiddyized. After DW 4 that is. Legend of Zelda, for me, went the same way.
i have five more years till i'm 30 but playing Mystic Quest for my SNES and Final Fantasy 3 (6) on SNES as well got me hooked. What drove the hook deeper was my friend in highschool getting me to play Advanced D&D and 3rd Edition, as well as a bunch of warhammer and WH40k Books (and warhammer fantasy roleplay).
Baldur's Gate is what really got me into everything i'm into now
Wizardry, Might and Magic, Bard's Tale... For the Apple 2C.
Same here. I still remember having to shell out like $50 for wizardry 1. I still have the manual around here somewhere, explaining what RPGs are and how to play.
Lots of good games mentioned here, but kind of surprised I haven't seen Hero's Quest / Quest For Glory by Sierra Games. Perhaps it wasn't a pure RPG, but it was a great RPG/Action hybrid and got me into the genre. Other than the staple of games already mentioned, I'd also like to add Elder Scrolls Daggerfall- spent way too much time on that one too.
For me, I would have to say that it was Baldur's Gate that got me into the RPG genre. From there, I went to Ultima Online which began my first MMORPG experience.
Other RPG games I've loved:
Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, DarkStone, Gothic, Rune, Nocturne, The Longest Journey and Siberia.
Ultima Exodus on Nintendo in the 1980s. Rented the hell out of that game from the local FAMILY RUN movie rental place.
2'nd would have been Final Fantasy on the Nintendo.
-OK Legend of Zelda was first first, forgot that is counted as a RPG.
-And I guess Castlevania as well....

Oddly didnt get into rpg's until snes era, with the squaresoft games, breath of fire, earth bound, etc....just didn't find rpg's prior to be enjoyable, i.e. ultima games, dnd-based games, and the such. missed the few popular nes rpg's
First memorable game: Ultima IV The Quest of the Avatar (still a milestone in many ways for me)
First MMO: SWG
screenshot from "The Sword of Fargoal":
Yeah in addition to Ultima 3, Sword of Fargoal was the other big RPG I pumped a lot of time into on my C64. Really great game for its time -- and holy crap that screenshot actually shows you getting the sword!

RPG it was back to stuff like TSR games on PC or P&P D&D, i think i even did a little FF on NES and a D&D game on Genesis, cant remeber the name. I vaguely recall an atari D&D game....
MMO was more EQ, was the first one i played. did some NWN.
I know the D&D game you mentioned. It's called "Warriors of the eternal sun". It's a fun nice rpg adaption for the sega console.
I remember that one! I had it for the Atari 800XL. It was not my 1st compyter RPG though. I started with the Level 9 text-adventures. First ones were Silicon Dreams & Jewels of Darkness.
For me it was Phantasie (I, II, and III). I played it on my Commodore 64 and Amiga. I played this in the late 1980's and it was the type of game that you pretty much had to write stuff down to remember what you are supposed to do. There was no quest log. Games today are much easier, but to be honest, I don't think I would want todays games to go that primitive hehe.
For me too it was games like Phantasie I, II, III. Questron II. The early SSI games.
They are fun to play still. But the UI is truly lacking. Always to remember to have a blank sheet of paper to note things and draw dungeon maps. ,)
Systems owned:, Spectrum 48K (Ahhhh the memories) Atari 2600, Colovision, Vetrex, Atari St, Amiga, Spectrum +3, N64, Sega Master System, PS1, PS2, Xbox 360 AND PC ALL THE WAY BABY!!!!! (loads of those).
First RPG: - Ummm....Lords of Darkness on Speccy and loads of text adventures.
First: MMORPG - UO

A bunch of different types of games got me into the genre.
First was D&D table top.
Then Dragon warrior & Final Fantasy on the Nes.
Add in a touch of Hero Quest the board game and Magic the gathering the card game.
This lead me to the mmorpg genre.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
My first RPGs? Hmm.... Lands of Lore, Eye of the Beholder, Might and Magic... and probably Shadowcaster and Heretic as well if you want to coun them as such.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Anyway... im almost 30... just 1.5 years off.
