I see some things never change.

That said, I wonder how far in to Warhammer the op got. Tier 1 is fun, and all, but the game just falls on its face after that, really. A problem exacerbated by the population issues.

As for my little top 10 list of joy?

    3 DAoC
    2 SWG pre-CU
    1 EQ

4 - 10 are empty. While I've played everything else out there, I can't say I've been hooked by any any other MMO in the way I was by these three

Terrible list, a lot of those games either suck or (especially in WAR's case) involved companies throwing a lot of money at something and shipping whatever came out. Maybe you should just go do PR for MMOs by AAA companies instead of claiming to list the top ten MMOs.

UO is a great game, EQ2 is alrite, I loathe all of those other games with a passion.

There's a few winners on this list and  a few losers for sure, but to each his own. forums need spell check.

Ok COH is good but old, i still play it, Hate me but i like AOC, Ultima was good but deep holy cow deep. He is right though.

CO at position 5? And ahead of the still far superior CoH?? Yes, he's right. He lost all credibility at that point. CO - for so many and varied reasons - belongs in the 10 worst MMOs, not 10 best.

LoTRO at position 4?? Yes, it was actually pretty much a finished product when they released it but it doesn't have much else going for it. Turbine managed to take possibly THE biggest fantasy IP and make a very mediocre MMO out of it, and one plagued with a plethora of little problems that kick what small appeal it has in the nads.

    It's a really sucky list.

This definitely is one of those articles where you have to question mmorpg.com's integrity.

Sure they have to keep on good terms with mmo developers, but really poor articles like this do no good for the site.

There isn't even an attempt at objectivity. Eg.

Age of Conan was a title I was ready to love from the moment I heard about it. I'm a Robert E. Howard fan, and the chance to play in his world was very tempting. And while the game initially underwhelmed, Funcom has done everything they can to bring it up to par in the two years since its launch. The forthcoming expansion, with its focus on lateral character development as opposed to simply raising the level cap among a slew of other updates is just one more reason among many that Age of Conan is currently my most-played title.

Why is this MMO at position 3?

    • the author is a Robert E. Howard fan (subjective)

    • Funcom screwed up the launch but they've been trying to fix it (who cares? This isn't a top-10 for effort list)

    • there's an expansion coming (newsflash - this isn't the first mmo to release an expansion)

    • they have "lateral character development" - whatever that means (how does this earn it position 3?????)

Not one of mmorpg.com's finer moments....

    NO SUCH CLAIM WAS MADE.

What is it with you people and your inability to recognize an editorial piece?

This definitely is one of those articles where you have to question mmorpg.com's integrity.

No, actually....this is one of those articles where you have to question the INTELLIGENCE of the MMORPG.com community of readers (or people who CLAIM to be able to read, rather).

Sure they have to keep on good terms with mmo developers, but really poor articles like this do no good for the site.

There isn't even an attempt at objectivity. Eg.

Opinion/editorial pieces...don't require "objectivity." This isn't a news item. It's an opinion column.

Because the writer...you know...the one who WROTE the article, is writing his OPINION and that IS his OPINION. That's why.

Not one of MMORPG.com community's finer moments of showing their massive intellectual capacity to discern rightly the intent and foundation of an article.

Age of Conan is the tops on my list. WoW and WoWhammer just feels like kids games to me.

AoC devs are not "trying" to fix things, they ARE and HAVE fixed things. AoC is MUCH improved. AoC is much better then the rating this site gives it...in my opinion.

EVE would also be on my list.

I think the most damming thing about the list is that it shows how weak the mmo genre really is . I've heard EVE is great so I'm suprised not to see that on the list . WoW does deserve the number one slot by default as no other release has yet to get it truly right (as a game though it is well past its best) . I would have put lotro at number 2 myself because its the only mmo apart from WoW thats kept my interest going past the 12 month stage . Age of Conan i found is ok to play would nt want to level an alt in it though . Warhammer has some nice pvp although after what I read about the billing errors made recently by mythic theres no way i would ever give them my credit information again .

Good to see MMORPG getting the money to keep their site up.

I personally agree with WoW being on the top. Blizzard is just pretty much the best in gaming companies in my opinion for the PC. Yeah I know because I mentioned WoW in a sentence without insulting it I'm a complete fanboy, etc ,etc. I think this is a decent list.

The fact that he put Age of Conan in the top 3 nulls the entire article.

You know the difference between the gaming industry and the rest of the entertainment industry, blockbusters do not automatically make you No. 1. Commercial success, as great as it is, is not an automatic win. WoW does a lot of things right, but its not innovative, it is not a technical marvel, it is not especially compelling in terms of story. It is a perfect blend of those things that make it entertaining for a lot of people, but the only place it actually stands out is commercial success. That doesn't mean it should auto jump to the top of the list.

But hey, if a game that launches terribly, screws its customers, operates like a greed machine can hit the top 10 and it doesn't really enjoy even commercial sucess, than that just shows the author's love afar with the industry is so limited, so blinded and shared by so many gamers that there really is no need for the publishers to bother with quality, customer service or, god forbid, uniqueness because there are enough people out here who will lap it up and pay them so they can say oh great, after two years of taking my money, they might just now having something I like. I know, let's give them no. 3 on the countdown so they turn around and do it again!

I have to first say that I really liked WoW as a game, probably only because I was either high or drunk while playing, it was fun for the first 1-80 and the raiding was fun for the first month even with all the guild drama, but by no means did it have quality. You can't say it was a quality game when everything was so repetative.

Honestly, I sat here and could only think of 8 that are worth mentioning.

    8. Aion

    7. WAR

    6. WoW (I hate to admit it, but I spent a long time here)

    5. DAoC (RvRvR = much better than the 2 factions in WAR)

    4. Vanguard (its a really great game now. Low pop is holding it back from being top 2)

    3. Star Wars Galaxies (Pre Jedi)

    2.  Everquest 2

    1. Everquest

Everquest at its peak was the game that hooked me, and I still have the most fond memories of the game than any other. =)

I think the problem with these type of "top 10" articles is that they leave themselves open to flaming details such as rank position and can avoid meaningful content discussions. I agree that this is an odd top 10  list, but I still liked reading about the OP's in-game experiences. I would rather have entitled the article "My experiences in some imperfect and yet overal enjoyable games that I have listed in no particular order"...

I agree with the weakness of the gameplay experiences in MMO's even though they do still represent technical marvels even if people don't appreciate the amount of brain power that is involved in bringing even a mediocre MMO title to life. Also people's expectations and social in game experiences are so variable that it makes agreement on the "best" title nearly impossible. I played EVE and enjoyed the ship design, but the quests were frequently identical from system to system and in the end amounted to an Atari 2600 experience where I had to repetitively shoot at small red X’s in a black background; now if I had belonged to an active guild involved in espionage and economic domination it might just put such a game on a personal top 10 list...

    1. WoW

    2. WoW

    3. WoW

    4. WoW

    5. WoW

    6. WoW

    7. WoW

    8. WoW

    9. WoW

    10. WoW

Fine, we'll compromise. I'll get my way & you'll find a way to be okay with that.

Although i do not nearly agree with Bill's opinions on this list, but they are his opinions, and i threw out my opinion picks in here a few days ago, as we all have a right to. Maybe this should have been an article vs forum. Less controversy, unless controversy was the intention. Top ten lists again IMO, should be based on votes or polls with no commenting.

to each his own.....lets not forget that..... what sucks to me maybe gold to someone else thats why they are opinions

  • MadAddictMadAddict Member UncommonPosts: 76

WOW? your just looking for reactions, its pretty clear

  • Garvon3Garvon3 Member CommonPosts: 2,898

I could name many MMOs that " capable of matching the quality and breadth of content offered by Blizzard". For the number of developers Blizzard has, the amount of content they release is just sad. Games with 30 developers and less have made games more complex, innovative, technologically advanced, and stuffed with content than WoW. WoW doesn't even have housing, after 5 years. Really? How did that happen?

Much easier to add a billion generic quests all throughout the game and say "theres tons of content!" So, when you're not doing the same quest 1000 times, not raiding the same dungeons 1000 times, and not doing stupid dumbed down battlegrounds that  have no actual impact on the game, wait... thats supposed to be a high level of content? DAoC had more in it than that in 2001 when it LAUNCHED. Same for Ultima Online.

Also it seems he didn't play any MMOs before 2005, you know, where all the best ones were.  Except his UO honarable mention.

Wait... what? "get it right" ? You mean provide a massive number of tiny insignificant easy to reach goals to keep stringing along people with the addictive nature of leveling up, while not innovating or doing anything big at all?

Basically your'e saying, WoW deserves it because they targetted the casual market first and had the biggest marketing budget?

EVE is the PhD of not only MMOs but of all PC Gaming, any list without EVE is deeply flawed.
