This really wont change the number of "Cain"s out there or whatever example you want to use. If people want to be Cain, they throw as many XXXXs or whatever they want to have the name. And this happens in every mmo. Unoriginal people always have unoriginal names. Putting pwn, ninja, or sniper in there name for example. And honestly I have seen a lot less Legolassses and Sepheroths (to get around the blocks on these names) then I did when I first played MMOs. People just have just moved to random names like "Iwantkfcnow"
I think I would rather have a million sephiroths with different last names that a million versions of sephiroth ie, sephiroth1 2 3 etc etc... those kind of names break immersion big time. Ill break down pros and cons, well pros and cons imo
Last names
Pros
You can have the name of your choosing without having to be lame and modify it because someone else skipped work and got it
First and Last names makes for fun combonations for good names
You wont have to see a millino versions of the same name
Cons
Maybe have trouble calling out people in raids? But if you had 4 sephs in wierd variations, youd still have to makeup identifiers for the different ones
In any MMO game I have ever played I turn off the displayed names overhead because I feel it's immersion breaking to see "RoxorRogue" and "ROFLTank" running around.
I'm sure FFXIV will be no different in this regard.
What I'm getting at is people will make stupid names no matter what the naming system is. The only thing those of us who find stupid names annoying have to do is to turn off floaty names (god I hope that's an option).
The only thing that having to have 2 names is going to change is that instead of seeing
Cloudx
Xcloudx
Xxcloudxx
and Cloudxxx
Is we will just have:
Cloud with a differnet last name for each one.
There will still be as many unoriginal people, their names will just look normal, instead of dumb like the Clouds listed above. Unless they intentionally make them dumb.
Personally I like the idea of having to have a unique full name instead of just the first name, it will make it much easier to use the name you want.
I really see no down side. Stupid names will be there no matter what.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
It is common IRL to have the same first or last name as someone else. The only problem I see with it is the fact that whispering someone will be a little more texting.
There should and hopefully are a lot better ways to make your character different from the rest. We will soon not need the glowing names over peoples heads, the graphics are getting so good that you actually will be able to recognize people just by looking on them.
Being able to design how your cloths/armor works helps here.
Not sure if it has been answered, or indeed if anyone knows, but will it be possible to just have a first name. I couldn't really be bothered with having a last name, will I be forced to or can I just leave mine blank?
I'm pretty sure all players will have to have a first and last name.
Some... um... "gameplay" videos I have seen show that all the players have a first and last name.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
they do this in fallen earth and from personal experience i think its horrible, remembering names and whispering others and simple things like that become much harder, i didnt think it would be but it sure is, i just feel theres nothing wrong with having one name and getting some more creativity out of people,
It comes down to this and I should have made this point in my first post: I think we all like to have unique characters. The more character customization and growth options the better. Well, I feel one's name is a huge part of what makes your character unique and by allowing the possibility of someone having the same name as you, it hurts how unique your character is.
But it looks like I may be in the minority opinion here so I will respect what the majority would prefer. (I'm just honestly shocked more people are fine with this).
It is only a problem if you pick 'fashionable' names or even common names. Restricting the choices of names does not acomplish what you seek anyway as someone else can always be Jenova, Jennova, Jenovva, Jenovaa, Jennovaa, etc. etc. (god forbid!)
Giving more choice allows you more chance of being unique! More flexibility, more chance for uniqueness.
I respect your opinion but I guess I would rather see:
Jenova, Jennova, Jenovva, Jenovaa, Jennovaa
than:
Jenova, Jenova, Jenova, Jenova, Jenova, Jenova
But I guess its just a matter of personal preference.
I mean, would you like to see 20 other people on these message boards named Gorilla?
I for one and i bet many would prefer to see jenova x , jenova y, jenova z then every mispelled version of it or with XxJenovaxX ZxJenovaxZ and so forth. those are 50 times irritating than seeing alot of people with the same first name, different last names.
I would agree a strong Tos against using names of famous chars ect should be enforced to kill off the 1500 legolas that will plague the server. but seriously i would prefer to see 1500 legolas spelled right than seeing 1500 different ways of spelling it.
Tabula rasa had it where you were known by your last name. quite like the military does. there were never fights about names due to it and never threads like this one emerged from it.
This is quite nitpicking for the smallest things. So yes i know its a fantasy game we throw fireballs n stuff it doesnt have to be like real life with the names. But then I read many fantasy books were there were chars with the first same name , different last name. Didnt make the book any duller or real life cuz of it.
Anyhow i do prefer to see the names spelled right for those who lack creativity and have to go with that cloud name than see tons of bling around the name.
So lame idea. NO actually a darn good one.
edit: They can adopt the friendlist from istaria once someones in it you just rightclick their name and select private chat. There are many other ways like making a friends name clickable to then send a tell. Many other games have this which puts the /tell xxxhxitfhd out of date.
Yup with this system you won't be able to go anywhere in the game or grp with anyone that isn't named Sephiroth. The join that will bring to all the big time Sephs out there.
How many delicate flowers have you met in Counterstrike?
I got a case of beer and a chainsaw waiting for me at home after work.
Personally they should leave it like FF11 with just a first name, I never liked the first and last name idea in other mmorpg's if its optional fine, if its force its one reason to stop me from buying the game.
"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words." -Poster on mmorpg.com
Rift: World of Warcraft clone #9321 Nothing special to see here move along.
I honestly think it's great. Asheron's Call 1 and 2 allowed spaces in names. DAoC had surnames, but all first names were unique. All three games I really enjoyed and loved that I could display my last name for my characters. I also game with my wife, and we do the thing where we have the same last name on occassion.
For me, it can be somewhat immersion breaking when there isn't last names in a game. Hell, in the real world I think I have known about 12 different Matt's, 5 different Dan's and 10 different Nate's, give or take, but last names make a gameworld a bit more "real" for me. Makes the game feel a bit more alive, or maybe I'm just weird.
I am sure we'll have the ability to report people with names like...Dixie Normus or Gumyum Bubblenuts or Harace Ment (yes I have seen all three in DAoC). They didn't last long.
Finally, how often do you really stare at people's names? If certain names, like Sephiroth Johnson, are offensive, then you don't have to sit and stare at their name. Hell you can probably put them on ignore so you don't see their speech. Although, they may also turn out to be a really great person. Never judge a book by it's cover.
Well, even though I would still prefer individual first names (and probably always will) at least you guys have helped me feel it may not be as bad as I fear.
I guess if I can't have a guaranteed unique first name, maybe I will go the opposite route and have a completely unoriginal first name...
Darth Kupo. Hmmm, I like the sound of that (just kidding!)
um...i suggest we just wait and see how it goes. Since this system not like in any other MMORPG why not try and see? maybe you'll like it.
as for how to /private talk .... imagine we're given a code(or some sort of number) that our player has from the game begining. If u want to, u can give it to your friends, and you'll know that no one will bother you in private and avoid anyone just putting you to friends list for no reason(or some reason u don't know and will never know). or spamming if that matters.
see, with a little imagination u can do something like that. And they created armoury system. do u think they don't have a plan?(of course that is posibility, but really >_< )
I also think that having two names causes more problems than it's worth.
[...]
"Phrase" names: This is a huge pet peeve for me, even if it doesn't bother others as much. Tell someone to pick a first and last name for their character and they are much more inclined to make it a disguised phrase such as Ivana Gethigh, Robin Yublind, Whyso Sirius, etc. Yes, this is again possible with a one-name system but allowing two names is practically a written invitation to do it. Unless S-E enforces a very strict naming policy (and I'm not holding my breath... EverQuest was the last game to disallow this AFAIK), the world's going to be full of them.
Called it. Months ago.
I had the opportunity to peek over someone's shoulder to see some of the alpha, and more than half the player names were like this. Ugh.

During testing of a game, a serious player would more than likely make a "just for fun" name because... guess what... they are getting deleted. Once the real game starts, though, they are more likely to come up with original names.

I knew my character was going to be deleted in few months anyway, so I just chose a joke name. There's no reason to think up anything original when you have to start from the beginning multiple times anyway. You just make up something on the fly and get to testing.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Rofl those names are funny. If those names were in the game I would chuckle a few times I see them but after awhile they loose thier funniness.
I'm personally a fan of the concept of last names being tied to accounts and first names to characters. I believe DDO does this.
It's not such a big deal with FF's as it's possible (and preferred) to level multiple jobs/classes with one character. Still, it makes it easy to keep track of people's mule(s).
Someone brought up difficulties with whispering in two name games. That's easy to get around, just have the whisper command use the unique name (in this case the last name.) Then you can whisper someone who's online no matter what character their playing (assuming unique names are tied to accounts.)
I think the cool part is that if you have two friends with the same first name, you can just set a unique nickname for each one when you /tell them. Sounds easy enough to me.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best. FFXI Character: Satimasu FFXI Server: Valefor FFXIV Character: Tamorae Fonteil
Been around databases for decade using real world data and you might be surprised, but there are many people with the same first name. There are also people with the same first and last name. Sometimes, you have people with the same first, middle, last name with the same address with only a birthdate difference (as in father/son).
It is easily doable and the only problem is the lack of imagination. Imagine you have ten james in your cell phone list to work out the problems for yourself. IE, not a real problem.

It seems you hit a nerve with the sephiroth and cloud crowd, where is my neko? <.<
Queue 1 billion combos of Sephiroth Cloud, Cloud Sephiroth, XxXCloudXxX Sephiroth, etc.
Here's my take on the whole thing.
