Although admitadly you should probably book a month off from the family first, lol
That's a pretty good 1-line description of EVE. But do remember that it is also how CCP themselves describe and market EVE: A dark, cold, corrupt universe where the strong survive. But whereas most MMO companies say that their virtual setting is perilous and full of danger, EVE actually is perilous and full of danger.
LOL I gotta put my 2 cents in. I Hate EvE. : ) Like WoW haters hate wow I hate Eve. EvE is a game I have tried to love ever since I was playing Earth and Beyond and it was announced. I have tried on four separate occassions over the years to get interested in EvE. It is just not my cup of tea.
HOWEVER you should definitly try it you may find nervana, hell it's a free trial, why not.
There are about 8k posts why eve is a waste of time and money. Take a few minutes and read up on them before the fanbois talk you into dumping a days pay into it.

Quirihd, here is a classic example of the kind of idiot I was referring to. Notice the way he subtly elides the existence of a 21-day free trial.

True, but in his defense there's a seed of truth in all of those posts he mentions. I'd recommend reading all the good and all the bad - both taken with salt ofcourse - and then trying the trial.

bahh forget reading bullshit typed by fanbois and haters. Shit... if people take my posts to heart they would be lead to believe Eve is so awesome it could give you super powers and free money.
Anyone interested in Eve try the trial, do the tutorials and ask questions in help chat (not rookie). if a day or two goes by and you arent in love with the games setting, gameplay or freedom its not for you.

8k?.. is that all ?
Thats rather generous for any MMO. If there were only 8000 posts why eve is bad then I'd say that is a resounding endorsment! Think you messed up there, lol!
But I dont think anyone tries to hide what Eve is. After all, its only got 330k (odd) subscribers, its obvious for anyone to see that its not everyones cup of tea.
In anycase... I had a friend who years ago said he wouldnt play Eve because he read a post like yours, about not wasting money. He recently got back in touch with me complaining that I didnt do more to convince him to try it! - He's been playing for 6 months now and both his brothers have started now too.. each of whom were also told "not to bother"
What he's annoyed about is the fact that had he started back then he would have been in a far greater position now.. instead of "wasting years of my life on WoW"
I was truly shocked that a wow player would say such a thing... The point is, just because YOU dont like it doesnt mean others wont and its really unfair to suggest that someone shouldnt eve 'try' something

Most WoW players I know realize that wow was a pathetic game once they get into Eve. I was pissed I wasted so much time playing it when i finally got into EvE.
You see it Everyday in help chats in Eve. "Why the hell did i waste so much time playing WoW!!!!" seriously I read that twice already today in help chat and its 8am here.

Which makes me wonder about the people who only ever appear on EVE boards to stop people even trying EVE.
Incidentally... Where the hell does he work that $20 is "a day's pay"? Now WoW, that is a seriously expensive game to try. $50 for the game plus three expansions at, what? $30? You can play EVE for nearly a year* for not much more than it costs to try out WoW for a month.
*21 day trial + $20 activation which gives 30 days + 3x $40 90-day subs = 321 days for $140.

Yea I wonder the same!.. I mean, I dont go to other forums of games that I hate and make an attempt to convince people to stop playing or to not bother. So why do others?
I think the 'hate' over Eve comes purly from a lack of understanding. Afterall they see people going mad over it, possesed by it, they read about the things that happen and it sparks their imagination! they think... "great, this sounds awesome".. they log into the trial, fumble around, dont really 'get it' at all and become pissed off because they flat dont understand what it is that everyone likes so much!.. which turns into Hate. Its understandable.. the human mind really does NOT like not understanding... a year later they may try again, and it might be 3, 4 or even 5 trials later that they eventually grasp "the point!" and suddenly, CCP has devoured their soul *muahahah*
Any MMORPG is ultimately a waste of time. It's funny how people say they wasted time on WoW as if in EVE it is put to good use. For sure they enjoyed that wasted time while it lasted. it is the aftertaste of not quitting in time that they are regretting perhaps. Or, using an analogy, is it the regret of eating to big of a meal, with a heavy stomach now, forgetting how hungry they were before the meal went in? EVE is more of a waste of time than others because of how slowly you progress per amount of time played and money paid. Most EVE players will admit that it takes months to learn the game, get the skill points up, and to start to be able to have fun. For many, the 'fun' never comes or they just quit early. So it is a waste of time.
Yes, you can play casually, more so than other games because you could just log in, get skills trained, do a few missions or collect resources, and log off, but then it's a hit and miss in terms of enjoyment. Some people describe EVE as a fancy "Screensaver". I never got into EVE enough to play in a corp etc, mostly on purpose in order not to get sucked in too much, so I am biased, but extrapolating from how boring solo play became for me and my experience with group/raid content in WoW, I imagine you would either get bored or get sucked into it so much that your RL would suffer. Hence the waste of time theory.
Now, if all 300k+ EVE players posted positive feedabck here it would obviously look like it's an overwhelmingly awesome game, and on the contrary if all 10mil WoW players posted against EVE it would look like it sucks, so don't take any of these comments too seriously. EVE is a solid and intriguing game, but for many fun never lasts beyond the initial excitement about trying something new. From what I've read most people start enjoying it if they have friends in it and were patient enough to play for months.
The human mind needs stimulation, it can be almost as important as the need for excercise, nutrition and sleep!.. so no, I adamantly refuse to beleive that all mmo's are a 'waste' of anything. Not even a waste of money.
I've been gaming pretty much all my life, I dont think my life is wasted, its been full.. vibrant adrenaline packed I've met people and been places that I would never have done otherwise. Even now in my current employment I manage and run a profitable business.. for which I owe many years of in-game trading to gain wealth (especially eve). I also recruit for the company I work for.. having lead many guilds and formed corps my judge of character is sound and based on experience.
But with typical level based games you hit a ceiling a 'max' level. there is of course additional content but with Eve even if your not physical doing anything you can be training skills and gaining Skill points.
I think thats what people are refering too. It takes years and years to even come close to end game content in eve (which itself is subjective), and takes equally as long to build massive 1000+ pilots in empires that stretch and dominate portions of the galaxy, you certainly can reach levels of fame and infamy in Eve that is nearly impossible with typical 'multi-server' games.
I wouldnt say eve is "the best" game out there, and most Eve pilots will admit, openly to its flaws... but there are just somethings in eve which no other game has even come close to emulating.

The list goes on but thats not important, I heard EVE is very open and the pvp is fast and fun and is sandbox - something I like. I like the concept of "World PVP" Or you that you can carve out your own destiny - not locked in by sides or levels. My question is, will I enjoy this game? I enjoy games like Warband and Oblivion etc, and like the skill system. What makes this game so hard that people complain about here and there?? Ignore people like Malcanis' one line statements aganist EVE since they are fairly thoughtless and provide very little insight about EVE Online.
As a former player, I would like to attest the fact that this is the only MMO that I regret not being able to play because of time committments and my attempt at exploring as many MMO's as possible. This is definitely one I can find myself going back to due to its frequent updates and longevity, great potential if not the greatest among MMO's today.
EVE Online is a very deep and strategic game on multiple facets from exploration to craft to trade to combat to more. It IS a slower paced game since ship navigation and combat is more akin to naval (like controllnig giant ships) as opposed to single seated fighters ala X-Wing etc.
The game is more about economic and social rather than skills and levels. The prime goal is to acquire ISK but the way you acquire it is near endless and the options are vast. ISK is used for about everything from buying ships/equipment from others, to buying skills you want to train to stocking ammo/commodities to trade to upkeep on starbases.
The skil progression system is entirely based on time, this can be good or bad. If you feel you should have to develop your skills through manual gameplay, then this might not be for you. However, I'll assure yuo taht even if a person has more skills, generally the victor goes to the person who makes the better decisions overall from ship type/equipment on ship to navigation and minute combat decisions.
I personally like the time based skill progression because I feel it allows me to focus on the actual gameplay and have fun. If you do end up playing, I suggest finding a socialable corporation friendly to noobies. I was in one that pratically gave me everything and it was family oriented. Got me into a hulk and provided extra facilities to help me with crafting and provided me with much insight and tips that only years of experience cuold of taught you otherwise.
The community is amongst the greatest and I highly suggest this game if yuo're into deep strategy, slower paced gaming and socializing with others. The trick is to not take this game in one big elephant bite but in much smaller baby bites, this game is generally for the long term so expect slower development. Afteral, its a sandbox and they let you do everything from the beginning just on a smaller scale where you work into larger and larger scales through time.
EDIT: oops, I did not mean Malcanis, I meant the person Malcanis was responding to, choujiofkono. Lol, sorry for the mistake.

It really all depends on your personality and playing style for the most part ..
Eve takes time ... not playing time but REAL-LIFE time
time that you pay for to gain xSP/hr of training time
how much time you need as a minimum depends on what you want to do
L4 missions takes 2-3 months of skill training
decent Mining skills takes 2-4 months of skill training
nul-sec pvp can take 6 months to 2+ years of skill training
just mission running is boring .. missions are predictable, which makes them easy
mining is boring too, strip-miner cycles are 180s long, during which time your doing nothing else
nul-sec pvp can be boring too, hours of travelling through empty system after empty system looking for something to kill
if you think you can cope with all that waiting/boredom/tedium & monotiny, then you may enjoy playing eve
because bizarrely it's the downsides that make eve enjoyable
the 1st time you solo a L4 mission
the 1st time you undock in a hulk or carrier or dreadnaught
those are the moments that give you the "Yes!!! I've made it" feeling.
This game requires patience but is the most rewarding game i have ever played. It took me about a month to really understand the game and i still learn things daily. It takes time to get the skills to pvp effectively depending on your goals and how quickly you can figure out what you need.
