Hmm... well that kinda stopped a few posts ago till you brought it up again LOL. I believe the topic has been the free trial and where to get it for quite a few posts now. Until you... that is.
I love FFXI, and I still play it every now and then and continue to give SE my money on the months I dont play it. However to any new player I usually suggest waiting until FF14 and reading up on it. Not by any means am I saying FFXI is dying, just that to really get into the game would take a lot of time and many people are unsure how it will fair when FF14 arrives.
So personally I would suggest waiting until FF14 releases or finding some sort of free way. FFXI isn't for everyone and FF14 will hopefully reach out to mroe people while still maintaining the original feel of FFXI. Extra codes are hard to comeby as the PC version has been discontinued from Gamestop stores and the XB360 versions can not be traded in.

I think what he means is that Gamestop is pretty much thinning their stock on all PC games. They are not bothering to order new copies of PC games just to have them take up precious shelf space that can be used for their pre-owned games.

I'll add about the free trial a bit, and yes sadly its down for what 2-3 weeks now, but I can see it returning eventually. I wouldn't be surprised if it was taken down to persuade more potential customers into buying the Ultimate Collection since its been rather cheap all over lately or quite possibly to combat some kind of RMT problem...
New copies still come with a 30-day buddy pass, so you can ask someone for one of those in the appropriate sticky, course digital copies don't come with one, but there still may be a few new players out there that bought the boxed version.

I would have to disagree. The game is crazy easy to get into more than ever, people are willing to help (for example, many times now I've had some random high level wander on by and just power level my group for an hour+), great community, fantasyic gameplay, etc.
You can wait for FFXIV if you want -- but if you're looking for something to do in the mean time... why not play? If you're just going to play another game while you wait for FFXIV, won't it essentially be the same thing? Might as well give it a go.

I played it over 800 days on just one of my characters and it will be the best 14 bucks you ever spent on a Final Fantasy game... and most likely the very cheapest 30 days of your life in gaming fun.

Now is a great time to return to Vana'diel. More people are returning now than ever! They are increasing the level cap and just added two new summons. With the level sync feature getting experience groups hasn't been this fast in years!

WoW is still expensive because they still have what like 9-11 million subs? It would be stupid business to lower the price when the demand is still high. Perhaps 14 will have more of a sieve-effect than a drain-effect on 11. I haven't looked much into it so my viewpoint is about as ignorant as it comes haha.
