Bioware has made some truly great games, Knights of the Old Republic is my favorite Star Wars game ever. Most Star wars Games have been crap. Mass effect, Mass effect 2, Dragon Age, and Jade Empire have all been extremely good games as well. At this point, I am more than willing to give a quality game making company the benefit of a doubt.

Ultimately I will play the game because its Star Wars and for all its faults and problems SWG's was the first MMO I really got into and remember having great fun in raids and building a city and having a great community flying our ships through the stars. So while the existence of SWG's does impact on the game it isn't all negative. The game just got a little old with less and less to do, and the devs constantly trying to out do the difficulty and rewards.

My biggest concern has to be the story element to the game, AOC's first 20 levels had a story element (different for the 4 types of arch-type) and then once it was over people felt bored with the game. Now ToR will likely have a longer story but once its over will the people that were drawn to the game because of the story feel just as bored and there wont be enough crafting, PvP, Guild city building etc to keep them going.

The other thing is the graphics, stylised realism is a choice but having watched the clone war cartoons there is something about stylised that is off putting. Somethings can look alright but others look wrong. While games with more realistic graphics can look truely breath taking. I understand that its for low end machines but this may date the game far quicker than BW realise. Where players are put off simply cause Episode 5 and not Jar Jar Binks is there Idea of Star Wars.

Now the feature I really want to see is Star Wars. I want to be taken back to a galaxy far far away and be part of a galactic empire (or republic) and battle across many different worlds.

I'm looking forward to this game as much as anyone and I think it's going to be a great game, but some of the information in this article is a little too optimistic even for me.

Early on, players debated whether or not the game was going to be a sandbox, a theme park, or a linear rail style MMO. It turns out that we are getting an amalgamation of all three; linear yet branched story lines, theme park styled quests, and what is described as "a sandbox feeling" game world. Lead Writer Daniel Erickson was quoted at this years Game Developers Conference saying, "One of the real things we wanted to show at GDC this year is that our worlds are huge, actually. They are giant, you can explore. They are massive. You can just wander off one direction and go forever." This, as a lover of exploration in games, was music to my ears.

Meh. You can wander off in one direction and go forever in World of Warcraft too, but in no way is WoW anything like a sandbox MMO. "Sandbox feeling" doesn't mean anything. All they're saying is that they'll have large zones that you can explore. And that's great, but no way is TOR going to be anything like a sandbox MMO. For better or for worse, Bioware's focus on story-telling strongly implies a linear narrative of some kind that will require the game to be on rails of some sort.

Let's now talk about the eight hundred pound purple elephant in the room, the combat. From what I have seen in the recently released combat documentary, combat looks more like a visceral, fast paced experience. This is refreshing to see being that most times in RPG style games, we have to deal with horribly drab combat systems. We have all seen combat that requires no more skill than to stand still and hit a three story tall monster with the same few skills over and over. This becomes a bit dull after seeing it done to death in countless MMOs. Bioware seems to really be taking its time making sure that the classes are as balanced as possible, and that the combat flows naturally.

From what very little we have seen of the combat, it doesn't look a whole lot different from standing still and hitting a few skills over and over. I'm expecting the combat to be kind of a weak spot in the game. I think they'll do a passable job with it, but I doubt it will be much different from most other MMORPGs.

I'd like to end this week's article as I always do, with a question for you the fans. What game play features and systems are you most looking forward to in this newest Star Wars MMO? What things do you hope they will get right and what would you remove or include to the game if given the choice?

I am looking forward to enjoying the story in an MMO for the first time. Given Bioware's reputation with RPGs, even if all of the MMO features fail miserably, it'll still be fun to play through all eight class' story-lines, especially since it will be fully voiced.

What I hope they get right is the rest of it, all of the MMO trappings: PvP, endgame, crafting/economy, in-game events and community. That's the stuff that Bioware does not have much experience with, so we just won't know until we play it if they can be successful at it.

Excellent article, wish the responses werent full of trollers and flamers. I hope to see a well fleshed out space combat system and good ship customization. The space battle scenes were some of my favorite and I hope they can do something there that would include the occasional epic fleet battle. I love that kind of nerdy stuff.

When i read this i couldn't help but get a deja vu each segment. I heard all this before said by many MANY mmo developers (Failcom or Crypic for example) and all those hype building promises always failed.

I am keeping my eyes on this game from the time it was annouced... But i'm experienced enough to see through the hype- talk that they are throwing around...

We'll see next year if the finishing product is worth anythinng. For now its just a bunch of same old boring promisises...

I've been uplinked and downloaded, I've been inputted and outsourced. I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading.

As long as they release a stable and playable game and give the IP the respect it has earned in it's 40 year existence, I'm sure the game will do fine, if not exceptional.

I'm also sure everybody complaining about cartoony models will shut their pie holes the moment they start playing the game and become immersed.  All of a sudden, you won't care wether or not it is ultra-realistic or not, because you'll be too busy playing the game and adventuring to give a crap.

     Yea finally a mature statement.

To answer your question: What am I looking forward to?

Challenging and balanced PvP combat and compelling storyline participation in missions.

lol this game looks so much graphically like a cheap assed Cryptic game... I expected better from BioWare tbh, I usually love their visuals.

Well, the author asked for us to add what we would like to find in the game.

For my part, SWG was an amazing game in that it didn't limit its play to just combat.  It has two spheres of combat that if one didn't satisfy then the other might in ground vs. space.  The non-combat game was very involving and intricate to the world before the NGE.

Crafting and Resource gathering were/are directly derived from the desires of combat roles.  They also catered to non-combat past times that players do enjoy such as decorating and player city system.  This feature is the first non-combat function mentioned as it directly relates to combat performace in the realm of equipment.  A very notable field but there is so much more.

Entertaining through dance and music was linked to combat in the form of healing Combat Fatigue(a form of player performace decay) and Buffing.  Today the system is targeted at Buffing only as related to combat.  The system however was a fun side occupation that appealed to more social conscience folks.  It is still a viable platform to try and excel as event creator and maker.  You could almost say it was a Facebook idea before Facebook added its community interaction.

Image Designer is a function of Entertainer that allows for full reconstruction (short of species change) of a given character.  It has some styles, colors and species designs (ex. tatooes) that are not avaible at character creation.  Its another wonderful addition little repeated in other MMORPGs.

Politician is the profession/class that governs the skills of running a player city.  It use to be that as your city grew so did your abilities as a Politician.  Today your given the entire skill set if you join a player city as a resident.  Little has been done to augment this feature in its inseption as it didn't relate to primary concerns of develoment which is combat.  To carry the title of Politician there could be so much more added to a like system in areas of Guild management or title.

Ranger and Scouting were direct combat related professions with much of there emphasis was on non-combat issues of survival and exploration.  Some of there skills removed to never return with the NGE.

Medic and Doctor were, again, direct combat related professions with much emphasis on crafting and buffing before the NGE.  Today, the medic is a combat profession with a buffing and healing componet.

Chronical System is post NGE profession that allows characters to create(within limits of looted componets) missions.  Its a non-combat feature that allows for the creation of combat senarios.

In TOR, I would ask that a more diverse non-combat realm be offered to offset the lack of diversity that is avaible in the eight classes that have only two templates for a total of 16 different possible characters (8 Republic, 8 Imperial).  I feel that the addition of more dynamically invovled non-combat capabilitys help strengthen the spirit of community.

strong community--> sub retention--> snow balling population-->WOW killer

In Star Wars and Star Trek you will have folks who just want to jump in for thier 3 hours a night for a casual experiance.  From what is revealed, they should be quite happy with the game.  Those folks who commit themselves to more, KISS(Keep It Simple, Stupid) will not cut it for developement.  Give these folks something more to invest in while they wait for thier next Raid.

"Obi-Wan Kenobi-ish Jedi Consular" I stil don't get why they say this. Obi-Wan was not a healer type at all he was a Jedi knight on the front lines of battle all the time. He defeated Darth Maul, General Grieous, and Any Vader ; ) in light saber battle.

ooh well that's the only real complaint that I have other wise the game is looking good to me.

Please give us a good game Bioware!!!! Graphics are an after thought to me and I think the direction they are going is good so far.  Combat looks decent for a game that's a year away.

I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.

I'm sick of the hate toward SWG vets, I'm an SWG vet I really haven't played an MMO since, as none have filled the void. Yet I'm not foaming at the mouth over anything, even the NGE...

There's a few posters who are bitter who have stuck to their ways of bashing anything and everything SOE or star wars, that didn't have the words Pre-cu roll-back following it. Stop associating these posters with the rest of us. They're nothing more than an anomally, just like the tram hating UO vets everyone used to see all over.

Most SWG vets are nothing more than gamers who enjoy multiple games and styles of them. I'm very much looking forward to TOR, as I'm sure many other SWG vets are. As we played SWG because it was Star Wars, not because it was a sandbox, or Koster designed it. That was irrelevant to a lot of us.

I am also an SWG Vet and I approve this message. I am very hopeful for this game, I wish it wasn't so cartoony, but I'm hopeful.

1 complaint before I go though.... What's with the Clone/Stormtrooper looking armor in some of the videos....this is the OLD republic... grrr.

Agreed, they should look like Medieval knights... with laser blasters. That'd be freakin' awesome.

    Waiting: SWTOR, FFXIV

  • BountyGregBountyGreg Member Posts: 37

I actually am an old time SWG player, and I know nothing will replace it.

Which is also one of the reason why I'd never play on SWGemu for example, no need to say it's illegal too, but that's another subject.

I loved crafting in SWG. You were needed and no drop loot could ever replace what a good craftsman could create, until the CU.

They took out item damage and from 1 second to the other, crafters were useless, 'cause you would never have to replace your equipment once you had it.

So crafters focused on creating even more better stuff, but wait, drop loot got better then what you could craft...and so crafters died out.

I have the feeling crafters will be useless in TOR, for a simple reason. There is no dedicated class as crafter.

SWG was a social MMO, with class interaction where you needed each other (mind healing anyone?), 20 man-groups with camp and medic to hunt Krayts..no other MMO does that.

Anyway, I'm looking eagerly for TOR, knowing it will be something else. More action, which could be good, but it will never replace SWG, that's for sure, and also isn't the point either :)

  • ThububThubub Member UncommonPosts: 62

Crafting only thrives in games where crafted gear is better than dropped gear.  I have tried many times in many games to get into crafting.  But I invest all that time to find out later that crafting is useless.  I haven't seen anything yet to indicate that SW-TOR will be any different than the rest of the MMOs on the market or in development.  From my experience, players that are into crafting tend to build the strongest community links in the game.  You would think that companies would want to promote that.

PvP - that's what I will play this game for.  It is very difficult however for MMOs to do PvP well.  What seems to be the trend is that companies invest all their time into the games PvE content then put in PvP as an afterthought.  I am still looking for a replacement for DAoC.  Nobody has done anything as good since in PvP terms, but I have hopes that TOR can fill the spot.

It isn't an 8 class system, its a 4 class system.  That seems very limited unless there is a lot of individualism within each class.   For instance a melee/tank vs melee/dps for the knight/warrior, a magic/heal vs magic/dps option for the counselor/inquisitor.  I get that it is easier to balance 4 classes for pvp, but the whole "less variety" craze of recent MMOs makes me think this game will appeal to less people and not more for that reason.

Well, I am looking forward to this anyway.  Here's hoping it doesn't suck like a lot of the recent releases have.

Obi-Wan was NOT a Jedi Councler. Yoda would have been a MUCH better example.image

I also hate the kiddie cartoony look. Complete with Mickey Mouse hands.

I will try it, but I am quite skeptical. I have more hopes for the Secret World, and World of Darkness.

I never got into WoW because of the same reason I most likely will not get into SWTOR. Kiddie cartoon graphic direction. Bleh image

Hard to say what the final product will look like since it has a long way yet to beta, but at this point I believe this game has a very good chance of upsetting the apple cart in the MMO genre.  I wish there were more details about the crafting system and how it affects the economy.

While the dedicated Wow player will probably stick with Wow, a lot of the undecided or bored will give this game a try and if it is half as good as the normal Bioware game, they will stay, unlike many of the previous blockbusters we have seen lately.

I would not be surprised to see 2 million subs or more within 6 months.

It will be interesting to see what Blizzard is going to counter this game with as Wow is getting long in the tooth despite the upgrades.  Maybe we will know this summer at Blizzcom, the MMO they have been secretly working on the past couple years.

I will probably try this game, but it depends on how good the crafting is and how it is envolved in the eoncomy.   Hopefully we won't see the "kill a bear and it drops a laser gun" type of economy.

This is where the fanboy take over from the common sence.

You really think it's between Blizzard -WOW and BioWare - SWTOR,lol have you looked at the HYPE games section on these forums lately.

GW2 sounds much moire appealing than SWTOR ,oh and don't forget that GW1 sold 6 MILLION copies.

GW2 Full story mode that effects the world around you and your character.

    Fully Voiced.

    Great Graphics.

    Interactive game play..ie http://www.arena.net/blog/nine-gw2-follow-up-questions-with-eric-flannum

Vast open world with Vast underwater world.

    Great combat system and skills.

The fact remains the neither the fanboys or the doubters no anything about this game. What we do know is it's been in development since December 2005 and up to this point BioWare have not shown us any of the features that make this a mmorpg.

BioWare saying "yes we have those features but we can't show them yet" is not enough. Show us these vast open worlds, show us the great crafting system you say you have.

Story story story, yes we know it's story driven, so is GW2. This dumb line that the fanboys like to shout out "it's BioWare" is just pathetic.

They have not even shown us the different playable races, yes they have said you can play other races but again it's just words.

Hmm, playing other races could mean that they think the glorified pet's (companions) are the other playable races. Perhaps the next time mmorpg.com suck up to BioWare they could actually ask the question like this.

TRUTH : Based on the latest information detailed by Arenanet plus the latest videos GW2 is just the same rehashed combat system guild wars 1 was with an open world and new animations.

TRUTH: BioWare has shown us more than Guild Wars 2 has that this game will be an MMORPG.

TRUTH: Noone can confirm whether Guild Wars 2 will have an actual story even remotely similar to what FFXIV or TOR will have.  Guild Wars believed their first game had story too.

TRUTH: Guild Wars sold many copies.  The 3 most recent BioWare releases sold more.

Its fun to play the biased game, but when you take off the bias and actually read into what you're saying you have much less information on Guild Wars 2 then you do from SWTOR, but because you're pushing an anti-TOR agenda you get to be hypocritical.

“Linear yet branched story lines, theme park styled quests, and what is described as "a sandbox feeling". - It should be no surprise for the hype watchers among us here that SWTOR will have it all. If you prefer sandbox, theme park, or linear rail style, STOR is for you. Fortunatly this new MMO like every other new MMO is just what we are all waiting for, regardless of what sort of gaming style we like.

“Companions will be able to tank, DPS, and heal.” – So no need for a group then?

“This is not a private party however, if grouped with friends” – So you can group but don’t need to.

“The ever prevalent issue of finding people to play with.” – An issue that is made worse by the fact that you don’t need to group as you have a companion.

“If grouped with friends, companions will also interact during dialogue scenes the same as you would talk with others.” – Well considering how new MMO’s do not support RP at all I suppose it will be nice to see the NPC’s doing it. :)

“Is a fully voiced title that promises to have hours upon hours of dialogue for your ears to enjoy.” – you see once again here a huge investment in an area which stiffles RP. The Npc’s talk, you listern, for god’s sake don’t speak to anyone yourself!

The only thing I am looking forward to is the graphics, the PvP and the combat. That’s not a bad list, but that’s the only things you ever do look forward to in new MMO’s.

  • QrajberQrajber Member UncommonPosts: 40

from all I have read about the game and what dev team  say`d so far I can speculate in which direction this is going it will have similar model to GW coop with npc`s no need for real players etc we all know that ...but my point is that they will sell Dragon Age or KOTOR as MMO and they expect that people should pay a monthly fee for it???

There are more hack/slash and RTS`s that should be called MMO than this at least I`ve seen that so far ....

WE all want some glimpse about pvp or how will crafting system be useful in game but we have seen none of it and we are constantly fed with "it will have a great story" phrase over and over that it makes me sick. I I love great story telling but MMo at least for me is all about finding /grouping with people so that you may enjoy game together /pvp together /craft and explore new content so far I didn`t saw anything or at least hear that some of devs had at least courage to say anything about actual game than "it will have a great story ".

  • dreldrel Member Posts: 918

What am I looking for that's new? The ability to explore where I want and do what I want ingame. I don't want to be locked into one class.  Combat certainly is important, but, I hope this doesn't become just another "shooter" game.
